This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the American People Miss turpin's Short History of the American People has impressed me as a work of exceptional value. The narrative is clear, impartial, spirited, and altogether read able. The prime merit of the work is, in my opinion, that events are made so to unfold that even a child will grasp the principle of cause and effect as it has worked itself out in the history of our country. This volume is not a series of detached dates and incidents, however picturesque or pleasingly told. The process of growth is brought out in every paragraph in such a way as to make the sequence of events illumining. By such treatment the reader is eu abled to contract the historical habit. As the habit of sound thinking is more than a thousand thoughts, so the historical habit of interpreting cause and effect in human experience is of far more value than any knowledge of events, however comprehensive. The author has preserved the due perspective of Ameri can history by giving a large place to the facts bearing on the industrial and social development of our people, in accordance with the changing sphere of the modern State, which is becoming more and more social both in its spirit and aims. The style is simple and yet energetic, while the appara tus for teaching, such as maps, topics for study, references for reading, and suggestive questions, are admirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the American People The name America, which, by accident or mistake, was given to the Western World, fell, in the process of time, to the principal nation on the Continent, and for more than a century, the inhabitants of the United States have been known the world over as the American people. It is the history of this people that the present volume is interested with. The author desires to tell, in brief, how the country was first settled, what motives incited the adventurers who-left European civilization to plant colo nies on our Shores; how those colonies gradually learned that there was strength in union, and that it was to their credit before the world to be one nation; how the early fear that a Republican form of government was not adapted to a large country was dissipated, and how the whole land was gradually developed until its present position among the nations was reached. It was evident; indeed, even to some who were not deemed thoughtful at all. Even the heedless, negligent Lord Culpeper, little as he really cared for the government he had been set to conduct, had suggested eight years ago that all questions of war and peace in the colonies Should be submitted for final decision to the governor and coun cil of Virginia, where it might be expected that the King's interests would be loyally looked alter and safe guarded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the American People, Vol. 4 of 5 It was a second democratization of the government. Andyet it differed radically from the first, which Mr. Jefferson had so shrewdly contrived. There was no kinship either in Spirit or in method between Mr. Jef ferson and this new hero of democracy. Mr. Jefferson had, indeed, expressed the greatest alarm at the pros pect of seeing General Jackson President. He is, he said, one of the most unfit men I know of for the place. He has had very little respect for laws or constitutions, and is, in fact, an able military chief. His passions are terrible. He has been much tried since I knew him, but he is a dangerous man. And had Mr. Jeffer son lived to Witness the result, he would hardly have altered his judgment. He had stood, for all he was so full of democratic doctrine, for conservative ways of political growth. General Jackson stood, it turned out, for personal government, party proscriptions, and the self - willed choices of personal power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Model History: A Brief Account of the American People for Schools VI. It does not make a specialty of military details. It is not a drum and trumpet history. Men are perceiving that war is a brutal, even if sometimes a necessary, method of adjusting national differences, and that that is a very barren national life which pro duces nothing better than 'the repetition of military deeds. It is a growing opinion with teachers of the young, that it is time some other history than military were taught in our schools. History is a much nobler thing than a mere record of bloodshed. War plays a small part in the 'real history of modern nations, and in that of the United States it is smaller than in any other. It has been the design, therefore, Without ignoring military history, to divest it of its details, and to present the salient features of the campaigns as the only thing the interests of the pupil demand. Book A Short History of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the United States Classic Reprint written by John Spencer Basset and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the United States IN this book I have sought to tell clearly and impartially the story of human achievement in what is now the United States, from the earliest traces of man's existence to the present time. Out of the multitude of facts which may be considered within the domain of American history, those have been recounted which seem best suited to explain the progress of the people as a nation. The influence of physical environment has been discussed in the opening chapter, which also deals with the primitive inhabitants. An attempt has been made to give the colonial period its proper unity and show in what manner the colonies were a part of the general British scheme of im perial government. At the same time one must remember that it is American and not British history which concerns us, and for that reasor. The narrative must not neglect the individual colonies. From the end of the colonial period the dominant interest is the progress of events which'have to do with the common cause of independence, and after that with national development. Much thought has been given to the proper distribution of em phasis between the various historical factors. Political institutions are the most conscious expression of the national will. They determine the form of the story which the historian has to tell. But social and economic conditions and the actions of leading men give color and contour to the figure and decide whether it be attractive or unattractive, vivid or unimpressive. This volume contains at inter vals summaries of the habits and social progress of the people, while throughout it seeks to present the decisions of congress and adminis trations in the matters which relate to the most important phases of popular welfare. It is believed that, if well done, it thus becomes in the most vital sense a social history. My aim has been to lay the necessary foundation for those who wish to pursue further the subject of American history in whatever phase they may be interested. Book An Industrial History of the American People Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Industrial History of the American People Classic Reprint written by J. R. H. Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Industrial History of the American People The underlying thought of this book is borrowed from one of the greatest thinkers of modern times, who, among many wise sayings, once wrote this piece of advice - "Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted, nor to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider." This gives us in a nutshell the task of high school education, to teach our boys and girls in such a manner that they may in time become thoughtful students of men and events. The author has often been struck by certain shortcomings in our standard high school courses in history. For the prospective college student, especially if he is pursuing the ancient languages, the study of ancient history for one year in the early part of the course may be profitable, but for the great majority of students who do not attend college and whose circumstances drive them early from school into wage-earning occupations, the study of some other form of history would be far more profitable. More valuable to such students than familiarity with Greek and Roman history is a knowledge of the industrial history of their own country, an account of the development and influence of a few typical industries, among which the student must perchance choose one as a means of livelihood and in which he will in any case have direct interest as a citizen and a worker in the industrial field. Book A People s History of the United States

Download or read book A People s History of the United States written by Howard Zinn and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2003-02-04 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools -- with its emphasis on great men in high places -- to focus on the street, the home, and the, workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles -- the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality -- were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States, which was nominated for the American Book Award in 1981, features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. Revised, updated, and featuring a new after, word by the author, this special twentieth anniversary edition continues Zinn's important contribution to a complete and balanced understanding of American history.
