Book The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I

Download or read book The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I written by Frederick Pollock and published by . This book was released on 1895 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this book was envisaged as a joint venture and bears the name of both Pollock and Maitland, it is substantially the work of Maitland. It was recognized at once as a masterpiece and has since been accepted as one of the great histories in the English language. In Maitland's lifetime Acton pronounced him the ablest historian in England. Plucknett said that 'everything he wrote exercises a deep fascination and a personal attraction'. To Sir Maurice Powicke he was 'one of the immortals'. Lord Annan, in the preface to his Leslie Stephen, called him 'perhaps the greatest of all professional historians'. To read The History of English Law, even many years after Maitland's death, is to feel at once the touch of a master.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of English Law: From the Earliest Times to the End of the Year 1919 That this is a sufficiently ambitious attempt, no one can be better aware than the author. Though he has made no state ment which he has not verified from original evidence, he has, naturally, availed himself to the full of the work of previous writers for the earlier part of his task. But, from the end of the sixteenth century, he has sailed over an almost uncharted sea and his responsibility is great. He can only plead that he has kept a careful look-out, and that he has striven faithfully to sail the ship in the. Main current, without attempting to enter the bays and inlets, which to have explored would either have prolonged the voyage to an undue length, or have neglected the essential for the picturesque but less important. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of English Law: From the Earliest Times to the End of the Year 1911 It seemed, therefore, to the author, that the time arrived, at which Messrs. Methuen 8: Co.'s original be realized; and he ventured to approach them with a sugges tion for a revival of the plan. It was, of course, obviously due to Dr. Holdsworth that his concurrence should also be obtained. In both quarters the response was prompt and cordial; and Dr. Holdsworth, with great generosity, further offered to read the proof sheets of the intended work, and give the author the benefit of his criticism. Book The Beginnings of English Law

Download or read book The Beginnings of English Law written by Lisi Oliver and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laws of Æthelbert of Kent (ca. 600), Hlohere and Eadric (685x686), and Wihtred (695), are the earliest laws from Anglo-Saxon England, and the first Germanic laws written in the vernacular. They are of unique importance as the only extant early medieval English laws that delineate the progress of law and legal language in the early days of the conversion to Christianity. Æthelbert's laws, the closest existing equivalent to Germanic law as it was transmitted in a pre-literate period, contrast with Hlohere and Eadric's expanded laws, which concentrate on legal procedure and process, and again contrast with the further changed laws of Wihtred which demonstrate how the new religion of Christianity adapted and changed the law to conform to changing social mores. This volume updates previous works with current scholarship in the fields of linguistics and social and legal history to present new editions and translations of these three Kentish pre-Alfredian laws. Each body of law is situated within its historical, literary, and legal context, annotated, and provided with facing-page translation.

They embody our society’s genetic code. In the masterful hands of the subject’s greatest living historian, the story of the evolution of our laws serves to lay bare the deciding struggles over power and justice that have shaped this country from its birth pangs to the present. Law in America is a supreme example of the historian’s art, its brevity a testament to the great elegance and wit of its composition.

Download or read book A Short History of English Law written by Edward Jenks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of English Law: From the Earliest Times to the End of the Year 1919 About ten years ago, Messrs. Methuen & Co. approached the author with a proposal for a History of English Law in one volume. At the time when the approach was made, the author's time was deeply pledged in other directions; and he doubted, also, whether the moment had arrived at which the state of available knowledge rendered such a work possible, He therefore suggested an application to his friend Dr. Holdsworth. As is well known, that application was not made in vain; and the world is to-day the richer by Dr. Holdsworth's three volumes. But, in the hands of Dr. Holdsworth, the work has proved to be something very different from what was at first contemplated; and the plan for a single volume has developed into a scheme of which the first three volumes bring us down only to the end of the sixteenth century. Meanwhile, largely owing to the labours of Professor Maitland and other contributors to the noble series of volumes produced by the Selden Society, more material has become available; while the recent publication, the fruit of American enterprise, of the three volumes of Select Essays in Anglo-American Legal History, has further stimulated interest in the subject.
