Book A Short History of Flowers

Download or read book A Short History of Flowers written by Advolly Richmond and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garden and social historian Advolly Richmond (of Gardener’s World) unravels the surprising histories of 60 flowers that shape our gardens. Have you ever wondered where your favourite garden flowers came from? Where their names derived? Or why some cultivars go in and out of favour? Every flower in your herbaceous border has a story, and in this book Advolly Richmond takes you on a tour of the most intriguing, surprising and enriching ones. Tales of exploration, everlasting love and bravery bring these beautiful flowers to life. Advolly has dug down to uncover the royalty, scholars, pioneers and a smuggler or two that have all played a part in discovering and cultivating some of our favourite species. From the lavish and exotic bougainvillea, found by an 18th century female botanist in disguise to the humble but majestic snowdrop casting a spell and causing a frenzy. These plants have played pivotal roles in our societies, from boom to bust economies, promises of riches and making fashion statements. These unassuming blooms hold treasure troves of stories. With specially commissioned artworks from award-winning botanical illustrator Sarah Jane Humphrey, which sumptuously bring each flower to life – this is a beautiful compendium for every garden lover.

Book The History of Dumbartonshire Civil Ecclesiastical and Territorial With Genealogical Notices of the Principal Families in the Country

Download or read book The History of Dumbartonshire Civil Ecclesiastical and Territorial With Genealogical Notices of the Principal Families in the Country written by Joseph Irving and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Dumbartonshire, Civil, Ecclesiastical, and Territorial; With Genealogical Notices of the Principal Families in the Country: The Whole Based on Authentic Records, Public and Private The field here is limited, while the incidents are SO varied and multifarious, that, paradoxical as it may appear, the only course by which unity could be secured would be to break up the narrative into numerous distinct compart ments, under which the different events might be classified. In a work so extremely limited in design as a local history, this plan was open to numerous grave Obj eetions. The chapters relating to distinct departments Of history would have been so numerous, and the transition from one to another in some instances so violent, that the plan could hardly be said to be an improvement on the One adopted; and it is not improbable that, comprehensive as it seems, a strict adherence to it might have led to the exclusion Of certain incidents altogether. Defective, therefore, as his scheme may appear, it was not without serious consideration that the Author judged it advisable to sacrifice mere unity in design to fulness and completeness in the aggregate, and arranged his narrative Of events with a greater regard to its chronologic than strict historic sequence. Download or read book The Radical Rising written by Peter Berresford Ellis and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glasgow, April 1820. The last armed uprising on British soil, intent on severing the Union and establishing a radical Scottish republic, ended in executions, imprisonments, transportations and 85 trails for high treason. Yet despite its political and social importance, the story of this working-class revolution vanished from the historical record. This book restores the radical rising to its rightful place in history, offering an incisive analysis of the rising itself and the events which led up to it, vividly recapturing the extraordinary heroism of its leaders, John Baird and Andrew Hardie, and the savagery with which the movement was crushed by the forces of the British state.
