Download or read book History of Battery B written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Battery B: One Hundred Third Field Artillery, Twenty-Sixth Division, With Pictorial Supplement; April, 1917 to April, 1919 In preparing this book the writers have attempted, at least, to meet what they considered the two chief requirements of such a book. First, we have tried to compile an accurate record of the Battery from the time it was formed until the time it was mustered out of the Federal Service. We have neither attempted to glorify nor make light of the hardships and achievements of the Battery. It is as it happened - nothing more and nothing less. In the second place by stories of what happened "Over There," by little incidents of our daily life, by a little word of each man in the Battery, we have tried to give the book a personal touch for everyone. The experiences we endured, the friendships we formed while in that best of all outfits, were too great for us ever to forget, but often even such great things as these are helped by a little reminder. If then in the days to come this book should serve as that reminder the writers will feel that their work, in spite of its imperfections and there are many, will not have been in vain. The Committee wishes to acknowledge its thanks to the officers of the Battery for their help in starting the book, especially to Captain Hanley, whose aid, in furnishing a place in which to work and other ways, has made the book possible; and to the original book committee, especially F. C. Perkins, for supplying the material. The Committee which finally composed the book was made up of John W. Russell, Editor-in-Chief; R. E. Jordan, Editor; H. W. McCarthy, J. G. Emmons, W. A. Watson, P. C. Wilkinson, F. Sisson, H. L. Emidy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Battery E, 323rd Field Artillery: A Brief History of the Activities of This Organization During the War With Germany History, we ofttimes think, is a dry subject. So it is when it deals merely with dates, births and deaths. But when it tells of living men and their hopes, what they think, how they talk, with whom they associate and what they achieve, it becomes a study which finds sympathy in the hearts of all of us; for do we not also hope, think, act and achieve? Truly, man is an emotional creature. When a common cause brings men together; when united endeavor knits them into an organization; when daily association produces a change in the lives of all of them; then it is that a new feeling arises - one of mutual sympathy, sacrifice, joy and achievement. This spirit, existing only when a number of human beings live together, is called It is the milk of human kindness which sustains men in the hour when difficulties are to be overcome and when the desires of the indi vidual must give way to the demands of unselfish service. The Great War has lasted almost three years and the advances of the Huns on land and their ruthless submarine warfare on sea had well nigh exhausted the man-power and resources of the Entente allies. After repeated insults and broken promises on the part of Germany to the United States, Congress passed an act declaring that a state of war existed between the United States and Germany. This act was passed on April l6th, 1917, and another war was added to the list of conflicts in American History which were begun in the month of April.
