Download or read book A Short History of the Ancient World written by Nicholas K. Rauh and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Short History of the Ancient World begins with the Bronze Age and ends with the collapse of the Roman Empire. Rather than restricting his analysis to the Greek and Roman experience, Rauh introduces students to ancient Africa, Israel, Egypt, Iran, China, and the Indian subcontinent. To aid students on their journey into the ancient world, Rauh has provided key terms and definitions, "What Have We Learned" review points, and an engaging art program that includes 51 images within the "Art in Focus" and "Materials and Techniques" features. Informative maps, chronologies, and tables also give students a closer look into the rise and fall of these great civilizations. Learning extends beyond the book with UTP's History Matters website (www.utphistorymatters.com) which includes relevant essay and multiple choice questions. With A Short History of the Ancient World, Rauh has crafted a comprehensive exploration of humanity's most fascinating early civilizations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Ancient Peoples The kindness of Professor Sayce in writing so valuable an introduction to my book makes a long preface unnecessary. A few words of explanation will suffice. The history of the Ancients is, owing to exploring zeal, becoming more interesting every day. But, in order to study it, access must be had to so wide a field of literature that few have either time or opportunity to attempt it. The present work aims at giving the main facts of ancient history in one volume, and thus bringing them within the reach of all. This necessitates brevity, but, as far as possible, concentration has been arrived at, not by omitting important facts, but by omitting matter not strictly historical, which yet finds a place in most ancient histories. That the history of each people might be complete in itself, a certain amount of repetition has been necessary. A choice had to be made between repetition and history by reference, and it was believed that readers would prefer the former. Of course, in connection with so wide a subject, no claim can be laid to original research. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Ancient Peoples: With an Account of Their Monuments, Literature, and Manners The plan of the Barnes's Brief History Series has been thoroughly tested in the books already issued - United States, and France-and their extended use and approval are evidence of its general excellence. In this work the political history, which occupies nearly, if not all, the ordinary school-text, is condensed to the salient and essential facts, in order to give room for a clear outline of the literature, religion, architecture, character, habits, etc., of each nation. Surely it is as important to know something about Plato as all about Cæsar, and to learn how the Ancients wrote their books as how they fought their battles. The chapters on Manners and Customs and the Scenes in Real Life represent the people of history as men and women subject to the same wants, hopes, and fears as ourselves, and so bring the distant past near to us. The Scenes, which are intended only for reading, are the result of a careful study of the unequalled collections of monuments in the London and "Berlin Museums, of the ruins in Rome and Pompeii, and of the latest authorities on the domestic life of ancient peoples. Though intentionally written in a semi-romantic style, they lire accurate pictures of what might have occurred, and some of them are simple transcriptions of the details sculptured in Assyrian alabaster or painted on Egyptian walls. Book The History of the Ancient World From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome

Download or read book The History of the Ancient World From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome written by Susan Wise Bauer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2007-03-17 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own. This is the first volume in a bold series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. Dozens of maps provide a clear geography of great events, while timelines give the reader an ongoing sense of the passage of years and cultural interconnection. This old-fashioned narrative history employs the methods of “history from beneath”—literature, epic traditions, private letters and accounts—to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is an engrossing tapestry of human behavior from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.

Ancient history extends from the earliest time to the-fall of the Roman Empire (476 A. Mediaeval, or the history of the Middle ages, covers about a thousand years, or to the close Of the 15th century 5 and Modern history continues to the present time. The only Historic Race is the Caucasian, the others having done little worth recording. It is usually divided into three great branches: the Ar'yan, the Semit'ic, and the Hamit'ic. The first of these, which includes the Per sians, the Hindoos, and nearly all the eui'opean nations, is the one to which. We belong. It has always been noted for its intellectual Vigor. The second embraces the Assyrians, the Hebrews, the Phoenicians, and the Arabs. It has been marked by religious fervor, and has given to the world the three faiths - Jewish, Christian, and Mohammedan - which teach the worship of one God. The third branch2 includes the Chaldeans and the Egyptians. It has been remarkable for its massive architecture.
