Book A Graduate Percussion Recital

Book excerpt: At 7:30 PM on the 8th of April, 2014, a recital was presented featuring works that presented a wide variety of stylistic works and instruments within the percussion repertoire. Presented in the room 101 recital hall of the University of Florida Music Building, the program opened with a timpani solo titled Groovin' Timps by Arnold Riedhammer, which required 4 timpani and the use of different types of mallets. This work was followed by Nanae Mimura's Transformation of Pachelbel's "Canon," which is a theme and variations piece built on Pachelbel's Canon in D major and performed on the marimba. The first half of the program concludes with a rendition of Amazing Grace on the vibraphone, which has some jazz characteristics. The second half of the performance opened with a world percussion piece by Robert J. Damm titled, Udu Dances. Udu Dances is a three-movement work that spans Latin-American, Middle Eastern, and West African styles of dances and rhythms which was played on an "Udu", a Nigerian aerophone. The udu has two holes--one at the top and one on the side--which produce bass tones when struck and covered with an open palm. You can also produce tones by hitting the sides of the instrument. In movements two and three, the performer has the option of wearing bells and beads, respectively, around his wrists. Following this selection was a chorale titled Not far from here by Blake Tyson, a marimba solo written in memory of a friend's mother who passed away from brain cancer. The performance concludes with Ensemble for One, a marimba solo with a multi-percussion setup composed by Claudio Santangelo. This piece was dedicated to Japan and the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The repertoire selections on this recital presented a variety of instruments and compositional styles. The performance contained approximately forty-five minutes of music.

Book Change and Stability in Thesis and Dissertation Writing

Download or read book Change and Stability in Thesis and Dissertation Writing written by Brian Paltridge and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining recent changes in the once stable genre of doctoral thesis and dissertation writing, this book explores how these changes impact on the nature of the doctoral thesis/dissertation itself. Covering different theories of genre, Brian Paltridge and Sue Starfield focus on the concepts of evolution, innovation and emergence in the context of the production and reception of doctoral theses and dissertations. Specifically concerned with this genre in the humanities, social sciences and visual and performing arts, this book also investigates the forces which are shaping changes in this high-stakes genre, as well as those which act as constraints. Employing textography as its methodological approach, the book provides multiple perspectives on the ways in which doctoral theses and dissertations are subject to forces of continuity and change in the academy. Analyses of the 'new humanities' doctorate, professional doctorates, practice-based doctorates, and the doctorate by publication contribute to understandings of new variants of the doctoral dissertation genre. The book paves the way for a new generation of doctoral students and asks, 'what might the doctorate of the future look like?'.
