Book excerpt: Most of us believe everything happens for a reason. Whether it is "God's will","karma", or "fate," we want to believe that nothing in the world, especially disasters and tragedies, is a random, meaningless event. But now, as never before, confident scientific assertions that the world embodies a profound contingency are challenging theological claims that God acts providentially in the world. The random and meandering path of evolution is widely used as an argument that God did not create life. Abraham's Dice explores the interplay between chance and providence in the monotheistic religious traditions, looking at how their interaction has been conceptualized as our understanding of the workings of nature has changed. This lively historical conversation has generated intense ongoing theological debates, and provocative responses from science: what are we to make of the history of our universe, where chance and law have played out in complex ways? Or the evolution of life, where random mutations have challenged attempts to find purpose within evolution and convinced many that human beings are but a "glorious accident"? The enduring belief that everything happens for a reason is examined through a conversation with major scholars, among them holders of prestigious chairs at Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the University of Basel, as well as several Gifford lecturers, and two Templeton prize winners. Organized historically, Abraham's Dice provides a wide-ranging scientific, theological, and biblical foundation to address the question of providence and divine action in a world shot through with contingency.

Book Sparks of Divine Glory A Practical Study of the Attributes of God

Download or read book Sparks of Divine Glory A Practical Study of the Attributes of God written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2022-03-16 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a good reason to study the doctrine of God? Knowing God, or not knowing God, has eternal consequences to it. The Savior came to explain the Father (John 1:18) and he said that eternal life is knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ whom God sent (John 17:3). Such a knowledge must include something more than a mere knowledge of facts. It must show a relationship of those facts, one to another, and how they relate as a whole to the life of the believer. Such a study must show what the spiritual benefits are to the redeemed, which then turns to the spiritual experience they have as they grow in Christ. This volume deals with the application of the knowledge of God, and how the doctrine of God should be a practical, every day consideration, in the life of the redeemed believer. McMahon covers all the revealed Biblical attributes and perfections of God, which also include some not generally considered. He covers that God is incomprehensible, Trinitarian, glorious, a pure spirit, self-sufficient, simple, unified, impassible, immutable, infinite, omnipresent, eternal, invisible, omniscient, all wise, light, truth, free, holy, good, faithful, love, gracious, merciful, longsuffering, sovereign, omnipotent, righteous, just, wrathful, jealous, and eminently beautiful. He ends with a concluding chapter on how the Christian should always be rejoicing in God’s majesty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a particular pressing question that seems to permeate the whole of Charnock’s works: “If the greatest or highest degree of excellence is found in this imitable perfection of God, this conformity to holiness, then what does this conformity look like in the soul that has been regenerated?” This book undertakes a detailed analysis of the various components of Charnock’s doctrine of regeneration, more specifically, the continuity in his thought working out the reality that is contained within the highest degree of excellence that is found in the imitable perfection of God. Charnock brings the whole of that image of God renewed in the soul under the microscope of Scripture to reveal the details found in the conformity to that vital principle, holiness.
