Book Search for Point Sources of High Energy Neutrinos with Final Data from AMANDA II

Download or read book Search for Point Sources of High Energy Neutrinos with Final Data from AMANDA II written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a search for point sources of high energy neutrinos using 3.8 years of data recorded by AMANDA-II during 2000-2006. After reconstructing muon tracks and applying selection criteria designed to optimally retain neutrino-induced events originating in the Northern Sky, we arrive at a sample of 6595 candidate events, predominantly from atmospheric neutrinos with primary energy 100 GeV to 8 TeV. Our search of this sample reveals no indications of a neutrino point source. We place the most stringent limits to date on E−2 neutrino fluxes from points in the Northern Sky, with an average upper limit of E2?{sub?{sub {mu}}+?{sub {tau}}} ≤ 5.2 x 10−11 TeV cm−2 s−1 on the sum of?{sub {mu}} and {nu}{sub {tau}} fluxes, assumed equal, over the energy range from 1.9 TeV to 2.5 PeV.

Book High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics Proceedings Of The Workshop

Download or read book High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics Proceedings Of The Workshop written by V J Stenger and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-09-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of this workshop consideres the prospects for opening up a new window on the universe with the generation of High Energy Neutrino telescopes now under construction or being planned. Potential sources of high energy neutrinos such as binary pulsars, supernovae, and active galactic nuclei are discussed. In particular, the recent model of Stecker and collaborators, in which neutrinos with energies as high as 1000 TeV are produced in measurable quantities in the cores of quasars and other active galaxies is critically reviewed.

  • ISBN : 9781590333365
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Neutrinos written by Arnold S. Lavro and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos are one of the most abundant particles in the universe. Because they have very little interaction with matter, however, they are incredibly difficult to detect. Neutrinos are similar to the more familiar electron, with one crucial difference: neutrinos do not carry electric charge. Because neutrinos are electrically neutral, they are not affected by the electromagnetic forces which act on electrons. Three types of neutrinos are known. Each type or 'flavour' of neutrino is related to a charged particle (which gives the corresponding neutrino its name). Hence, the 'electron neutrino' is associated with the electron, and two other neutrinos are associated with heavier versions of the electron called the muon and the tau. The book presents citations from the literature for the last three years from the journal literature and the existent book literature. Access is provided by subject, author and title indexes.

Book Observation of High Energy Atmospheric Neutrinos with Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array

Download or read book Observation of High Energy Atmospheric Neutrinos with Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) began collecting data with ten strings in 1997. Results from the first year of operation are presented. Neutrinos coming through the Earth from the Northern Hemisphere are identified by secondary muons moving upward through the array. Cosmic rays in the atmosphere generate a background of downward moving muons, which are about 106 times more abundant than the upward moving muons. Over 130 days of exposure, we observed a total of about 300 neutrino events. In the same period, a background of 1.05 x 109 cosmic ray muon events was recorded. The observed neutrino flux is consistent with atmospheric neutrino predictions. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that 90 percent of these events lie in the energy range 66 GeV to 3.4 TeV. The observation of atmospheric neutrinos consistent with expectations establishes AMANDA-B10 as a working neutrino telescope.

Book High Energy Astrophysical Neutrinos

Download or read book High Energy Astrophysical Neutrinos written by Debanjan Bose and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a pedagogical introduction to the likely sources of these neutrinos, their propagation and detection mechanisms. Detection of high energy neutrinos of extragalactic origin has led to an interdisciplinary field of research, involving astronomy, astrophysics and particle physics. An extensive review of various detectors and the observations is provided that consolidates the latest findings. Above a few tens of TeVs, neutrinos are conceived as more reliable messengers for astronomy than photons as these photons get absorbed in the background photon field. Determining the neutrino spectrum not only helps in exploring astrophysical objects like AGN, GRB, etc. but also allows us to study particle physics at unprecedented energies. This introductory book is intended to help advanced undergraduate and graduate students to get into the subject with ease, and it simultaneously caters to practicing theoretical or experimental physicists as a reference book.
