Book A Scrap in the Blessings Jar

Download or read book A Scrap in the Blessings Jar written by David Bottoms and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Scrap in the Blessings Jar, a volume of new and selected poems by David Bottoms, captures the evolution of the poet’s spiritual quest over the past fifty years. A native and longtime resident of Georgia, Bottoms draws inspiration from the American South, and his work examines themes related to family dynamics, the woods, animals, fishing, and music in an effort to, as he once told an interviewer, “reveal something about the hidden things of the world, the vague or shadowy relationships and connections that exist just below the surface of our daily lives.” This book charts his progression from tightly wrought naturalistic narratives to works that reflect his shifting conception of the interplay between memory, the present, and the metaphysical. At heart, Bottoms remains a storyteller who employs figurative language to discover the extraordinary in the seemingly mundane, and whose poetry explores the depths of our existential condition and common humanity.

Book excerpt: “As usual, it starts with love. I had my heart set on the door-to-door encyclopedia salesboy.” So begins Nance Van Winckel’s latest collection of poetically altered encyclopedia entries that feature a mixture of quirky social satire and absurdist wit. Entries like “The Importance of Mood to Man” use an encyclopedic tone to insist: “Your body is two-thirds water. Mood is one-third body” and “Life and health depend on the mood taken into the body each day.” An anatomic diagram of the nose is accompanied by the promise, “A nose can smell rain coming.” Alongside illustrations of the vestibule, the meatus, and the conchus can be found lines of text like, “As the one you love steps onto / your stoop / a widening wind / underscores the sky’s pummel.” Reminiscent of recent visual-poetic hybrids by such writers as Matthea Harvey and Bianca Stone, Van Winckel’s ground-breaking innovations must be seen to be believed.

Book Little Boats Unsalvaged

Book excerpt: Section by section, changes in subject, tempo, and even vocabulary offer at once a sense of unity and variety to the poems. Little Boats, Unsalvaged poses a polyphonic inquiry into the experiences and memories of the Vietnam-defined generation, an inquiry whose answers can only be tentative, fretted, hung in the contingencies of being just as the little boat of joy waits - not useless or lost, but abandoned and so beyond visible redemption."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Poetic Song Verse

Download or read book Poetic Song Verse written by Mike Mattison and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetic Song Verse: Blues-Based Popular Music and Poetry invokes and critiques the relationship between blues-based popular music and poetry in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The volume is anchored in music from the 1960s, when a concentration of artists transformed modes of popular music from entertainment to art-that-entertains. Musician Mike Mattison and literary historian Ernest Suarez synthesize a wide range of writing about blues and rock—biographies, histories, articles in popular magazines, personal reminiscences, and a selective smattering of academic studies—to examine the development of a relatively new literary genre dubbed by the authors as “poetic song verse.” They argue that poetic song verse was nurtured in the fifties and early sixties by the blues and in Beat coffee houses, and matured in the mid-to-late sixties in the art of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gil Scott-Heron, Van Morrison, and others who used voice, instrumentation, arrangement, and production to foreground semantically textured, often allusive, and evocative lyrics that resembled and engaged poetry. Among the questions asked in Poetic Song Verse are: What, exactly, is this new genre? What were its origins? And how has it developed? How do we study and assess it? To answer these questions, Mattison and Suarez engage in an extended discussion of the roots of the relationship between blues-based music and poetry and address how it developed into a distinct literary genre. Unlocking the combination of richly textured lyrics wedded to recorded music reveals a dynamism at the core of poetic song verse that can often go unrealized in what often has been considered merely popular entertainment. This volume balances historical details and analysis of particular songs with accessibility to create a lively, intelligent, and cohesive narrative that provides scholars, teachers, students, music influencers, and devoted fans with an overarching perspective on the poetic power and blues roots of this new literary genre.

Download or read book The House of Marriage written by Erin Hanusa and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The House of Marriage, Erin Hanusa searches ruthlessly and compassionately for deep and strange truth in a world we only believe we know. Whether set in a field in Tennessee, the lunar beauty of Egypt's White Desert, or a rain-soaked Plymouth on a midwestern highway, Hanusa's passionate, candid verse reconciles longing with understanding. The opening poems deal with objects close and familiar: animals, landscapes, and the body. Later poems trace an arc of familial betrayal and forgiveness, while others spiral through lyric, erotic mystery. Yet each of these transcendent poems is ultimately concerned with "knowing the finite ways we possess / to love, / in learning them all." With this remarkable debut, Hanusa affirms her place among America's most promising young poets. From "The House of Marriage" No other proof or clue remains,no photographs, no bed. This place is as fearfulas they said.I want to see themmove through it like water, luscious and damaging, toward the momentthat made me.

Book Campo Santo

  • Author : Susan Wood
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 1992-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780807116760
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Campo Santo written by Susan Wood and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Wood draws on her own past to create poems that are remarkable for their depth and clarity, and for the stories they tell. In Campo Santo, she chooses grief over nothingness and constructs tales out of her own lost world, the retrieval system of memory. Wood’s lyrical narratives chart the intimacies and distances between people. She writes about the pleasures and sorrows of family relationships, about the death of her mother, about the agonies of race in a small town, about the inconsolabilities of grief and the consolations of poetry. But for all the sorrows in these poems, there are also odd moments of joy and celebration the world caught and transfigured, recovered. “We all deserve some sweetness in the end,” Wood tells us. The poems in Campo Santo demonstrate Wood’s confident mastery of poetic technique. With this collection she takes her place as a mature, accomplished poet.

Book Fanatic Heart

  • Author : Deborah Pope
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 1992-10-01

  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Fanatic Heart written by Deborah Pope and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1992-10-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in Fanatic Heart, Deboarah Pope’s remarkably accomplished first collection of verse, are distinguished by their sensuous language, assured voice, and surpassing intelligence. “These are poems with a definite edge to them,” notes the poet Betty Adcock. Memory and identity, family and place, lives that encompass both “the wingsweep of joy” and “the fierce hug of grief”—these are Pope’s concerns. Hers are poems of pain and loss, but they are also, and more tellingly, poems of wonder, of love and passion in their various guises, of the ambiguity in every human relation—an ambiguity skillfully evoked in “Signs”: In these woods we have chosen with scarcely more knowing than we chose each other, prospects will always promise more than they come to. The solidity of this house is surface, the permanence of anything is myth. We take our visions edged, at home in a light that curves. Still, as they gypsies say, good road. The poems are set in a carefully articulated natural world, those sensual beauty Pope captures in such lines as these from “Peaches”: They will be all over the ground, gold-dusted, giving softly under the balls of our feet, size of apricots, no good for eating, but the smell will be delicious. Deborah Pope’s poems give voice to a life deeply felt and fully realized, whose very personal yield universal claims. At the heart of this poetry’s fanaticism is the search for the ground of intimacy and the configurations of identity. It is a measure of Pope’s skill that each recognition seems powerfully right, not sought but given.

Book excerpt: Daniel Boone’s Window, a new book of poetry by Matthew Wimberley, meditates on the past and future of contemporary Appalachia through explorations of both mythologized and actual landscapes. In poems that confront a region indelibly shaped by environmental turmoil, economic erasure, and the weight of an outside world intent on destroying it, Daniel Boone’s Window works to reclaim and reckon with the realities and complexities of Appalachia. Wimberley’s poetry seeks to dispel monolithic narratives of the region by capturing the rugged and the beautiful, approaching place with wonderment that subverts stereotype and blame.

Book Sylph

    Book Details:
  • Author : Abigail Cloud
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2014-04-07
  • ISBN : 0807156930
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Sylph written by Abigail Cloud and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her first collection of poems, Abigail Cloud draws inspiration from nineteenth-century European Romantic ballets, which often portrayed scorned females as mystical spirits such as sylphs, shades, and wilis. Some of these creatures seduced men into dancing until they died -- punishment for inconstancy or lured them into love. For Cloud, the dark gravity that holds these enchanters to the earth is the same as our own and thus these demons are as everyday as air. Sylph filters our world through the lenses of dance, folklore, and history, revealing our contemporary lives to be dreamlike and prismatic. "In the blink the mouse spent to disappear, I loved you," avows the sylph. The cost of her ascension -- and ours -- is steep: "our price speech, our forgetting breath." Such are the stakes in this complex, seductive, and stunning debut.

Book excerpt: In "Wildflower Flower,"whose title derives from a traditional country song, Byer speaks through the fictional voice of a mountain woman named Alma, who lived in the Blue Ridge wilderness around the turn of the century. In narrative and lyric, Byer's poems sing a journey through solitude, capturing the spirit and the sound of mountain ballads and of the women who sang them, stitching bits and pieces of their hardscrabble lives into lasting patterns. The landscape Byer depicts is haunted by disappointed love and physical hardship, but it is blessed with dogwood and trillium, columbine and hickory, and streams that sing a ballad as strong as any Alma has learned from mother or grandmother. Through these natural details and through Alma's indomitable voice, Kathryn Stripling Byer has brilliantly recreated a lost world.
