Download or read book Reconstructing Satyr Drama written by Andreas Antonopoulos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of satyr drama, and particularly the reliability of the account in Aristotle, remains contested, and several of this volume’s contributions try to make sense of the early relationship of satyr drama to dithyramb and attempt to place satyr drama in the pre-Classical performance space and traditions. What is not contested is the relationship of satyr drama to tragedy as a required cap to the Attic trilogy. Here, however, how Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides (to whom one complete play and the preponderance of the surviving fragments belong) envisioned the relationship of satyr drama to tragedy in plot, structure, setting, stage action and language is a complex subject tackled by several contributors. The playful satyr chorus and the drunken senility of Silenos have always suggested some links to comedy and later to Atellan farce and phlyax. Those links are best examined through language, passages in later Greek and Roman writers, and in art. The purpose of this volume is probe as many themes and connections of satyr drama with other literary genres, as well as other art forms, putting satyr drama on stage from the sixth century BC through the second century AD. The editors and contributors suggest solutions to some of the controversies, but the volume shows as much that the field of study is vibrant and deserves fuller attention.

Download or read book Aretino s Satyr written by Raymond B. Waddington and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pietro Aretino's literary influence was felt throughout most of Europe during the sixteenth-century, yet English-language criticism of this writer's work and persona has hitherto been sparse. Raymond B. Waddington's study redresses this oversight, drawing together literary and visual arts criticism in its examination of Aretino's carefully cultivated scandalous persona - a persona created through his writings, his behaviour and through a wide variety of visual arts and crafts. In the Renaissance, it was believed that satire originated from satyrs. The satirist Aretino promoted himself as a satyr, the natural being whose sexuality guarantees its truthfulness. Waddington shows how Aretino's own construction of his public identity came to eclipse the value of his writings, causing him to be denigrated as a pornographer and blackmailer. Arguing that Aretino's deployment of an artistic network for self-promotional ends was so successful that for a period his face was possibly the most famous in Western Europe, Waddington also defends Aretino, describing his involvement in the larger sphere of the production and promotion of the visual arts of the period. Aretino's Satyr is richly illustrated with examples of the visual media used by the writer to create his persona. These include portraits by major artists, and arti minori: engravings, portrait medals and woodcuts.

Book excerpt: "It was the straying that found the path direct." - Austin Osman Spare In the final throes of the Blitz, Austin Osman Spare is the only salvation for Marlene, an artist escaping a traumatic past. Wandering Southwark's ruins she encounters Paddy Hughes, a fugitive of another kind. Falling under Marlene's spell Hughes agrees to seek out her lost mentor, the man she calls The Satyr. Yet Marlene's past will not rest as the mysterious Doctor Charnock pursues them, trying to capture the patient she'd once caged. The Satyr is a tale inspired by the life and ethos of sorcerer and artist Austin Osman Spare. Another three novellas of occult enchantment follow: a bookseller discovers that his late wife knew the Devil, in the Carpathian Mountains refugees shelter in a museum devoted to a forgotten author, and in Prague a portraitist must paint a countess whose appearance is never the same twice. Download or read book Nicholas written by Elizabeth Amber and published by Aphrodisia. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lords of Satyr have a unique birthright. To say that Lord Nicholas Satyr, one of three brothers and heir to a stunning Tuscan vineyard, is a gentleman unlike any other would be a gross understatement. Half-human, half-satyr, he is an aristocrat of passionate excess, especially on a Calling night, and revels in the debauched pleasures of his otherworldly legacy, where nothing is forbidden. His talents and tastes are varied, in fact, but Nicholas has agreed to seek out and marry a FaerieBlend female, one unaware of her otherworldly birthright, to honor the king of ElseWorld's dying request--who, it has been revealed, fathered three half-faerie daughters. Nicholas's search takes him to Rome, then to a city just outside of it, where pretty Jane Cova, guised as a fortune-telling gypsy, captures his interest and his desire. Although he doesn't expect his marriage to Signorina Cova to be about passion, Nicholas is strangely struck by her innocence and unconscious beauty. To his surprise, he would like to teach Jane how to give and receive pleasure--when he had thought he would simply want a proper wife--but Jane is determined to keep her secrets safe and her desires in check.
