Book excerpt: Winner of the Man Booker Prize Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction Winner of the John Dos Passos Prize for Literature New York Times Bestseller Los Angeles Times Bestseller Named One of the 10 Best Books of the Year by The New York Times Book Review Named a Best Book of the Year by Newsweek, The Denver Post, BuzzFeed, Kirkus Reviews, and Publishers Weekly Named a "Must-Read" by Flavorwire and New York Magazine's "Vulture" Blog A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality—the black Chinese restaurant. Born in the "agrarian ghetto" of Dickens—on the southern outskirts of Los Angeles—the narrator of The Sellout resigns himself to the fate of lower-middle-class Californians: "I'd die in the same bedroom I'd grown up in, looking up at the cracks in the stucco ceiling that've been there since '68 quake." Raised by a single father, a controversial sociologist, he spent his childhood as the subject in racially charged psychological studies. He is led to believe that his father's pioneering work will result in a memoir that will solve his family's financial woes. But when his father is killed in a police shoot-out, he realizes there never was a memoir. All that's left is the bill for a drive-thru funeral. Fueled by this deceit and the general disrepair of his hometown, the narrator sets out to right another wrong: Dickens has literally been removed from the map to save California from further embarrassment. Enlisting the help of the town's most famous resident—the last surviving Little Rascal, Hominy Jenkins—he initiates the most outrageous action conceivable: reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, which lands him in the Supreme Court.

Book Satire

Download or read book Satire written by Matthew Hodgart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satire, according to Jonathan Swift, is a mirror where beholders generally discover everybody's face but their own. and over twenty-four centuries the mirror of satirical literature has taken on many shapes. Yet certain techniques recur continually, certain themes are timeless, and some targets are perennial. Politics (the mismanagement of men by other men) has always been a target of satire, as has the war between sexes. The universality of satire as a mode and creative impulse is demonstrated by the cross-cultural development of lampoon and travesty. Its deep roots and variety are shown by the persistence of allegory, fable, aphorism, and other literary subgenres. Hodgart analyzes satire at some of its most exuberant moments in Western literature, from Aristophanes to Brecht. His analysis is supplemented by a selection and discussion of prints and cartoons.Satire continues to help us make sense of the conventions that seem to have been almost genetically transmitted from their satiric ancestors to our digital contemporaries. This is especially evident in Hodgart's repeated references to satire's predilection for the ephemeral, for camouflaging itself among the everyday, for speaking to the moment, and thus for integrating itself as deeply as possible into society. Brian Connery's new introduction places Hodgart's analysis in its proper place in the development of twentieth-century criticism.

Book Earth s Enemy a Satire on the Present from the Future

Download or read book Earth s Enemy a Satire on the Present from the Future written by Barry C. Kent and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earths Enemy is a fiction about future changes in the way humans live. In this incredible culture humans have evolved a new technology, society and ideology. The changes were gradual and keyed to both a major decrease in population and a seemingly impossible alteration of the economy. The setting is a century and a half from now and takes place largely in the area formerly called the United States. Due to an unfortunate loss of most books and electronic storage devices much of history no longer exists. Jack, a psychologist, has volunteered to explain the new culture to a number of humans from the turn of the 20th century who had undergone cryonics and are now being revived. During these sessions Jack discovers many strange things about the past which the people of his time have forgotten. Likewise, few of the cryons are able to cope with the new culture to which Jack is introducing them. In one way or another each of them is disappointed by the paucity of technological inventions. Most are outraged or dismayed by the disappearance of so many things which they thought were an essential part of their way of life. No more newspapers, competitive sports, nursing homes, new music, fossil fuel, air travel, space programs, banks, courtrooms, prisons, money, multitudes of religions and only one language are generally unacceptable or incomprehensible to the cryons. All of them seem pleased to learn that there is no more war, crime, poverty, bigotry, overpopulation, or environmental pollution. However, when they discover the ridiculous changes in economy which have made the new way of life possible most of the cryons are willing to fight for a return to their old way of life.

Book The Time Seller

Download or read book The Time Seller written by Fernando Trías De Bes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-01-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Time Seller, the second book of business fiction from Fernando Trías de Bes—author of the international acclaimed bestseller Good Luck—is not your standard business model book nor a “get with the program” corporate drone story. It breaks the mold and offers a funny (and perhaps existential) meditation on time, work, meaning, and the true costs of “selling out” to the system. Trías de Bes has written an acerbic commentary that seeks to awaken those bound to a routine that has become the source of alienation.

Book If You Give a Pig the White House

Download or read book If You Give a Pig the White House written by Faye Kanouse and published by Castle Point Books. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 32 pages. A cleverly worded and illustrated picture book, this is the adult parody of the beloved children’s cautionary tale, If You Give a Pig a Pancake. Watch in dismay as the presidential pig gets into trouble, binges on too much Fox News and fast food, and cavalierly threatens national security. If You Give a Pig the White House both lovingly caricatures the original children's book series and shows just what can happen when a greedy anti-hero tracks his hooves all over America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together literary scholars and art historians, and maps how satire became a less genre-driven and increasingly visual medium in the seventeenth through the early nineteenth century. Changing satire demonstrates how satire proliferated in various formats, and discusses a wide range of material from canonical authors like Swift to little known manuscript sources and prints. As the book emphasises, satire was a frame of reference for well-known authors and artists ranging from Milton to Bernini and Goya. It was moreover a broad European phenomenon: while the book focuses on English satire, it also considers France, Italy, The Netherlands and Spain, and discusses how satirical texts and artwork could move between countries and languages. In its wide sweep across time and formats, Changing satire brings out the importance that satire had as a transgressor of borders.
