Book excerpt: Cameron Harley I left my life in Small Town USA for a dream job in an exotic country. My life was going to be fabulous. Only...it didn’t quite turn out that way. Five years later, I’m not only stuck working crazy hours as an executive assistant, but I have a hot and cold boss. Queen Helena Payne. The Royal Pain in my A… You get the picture. This is my life day in, day out, until one call changes everything. I’m heading back home. Even if I’m madly in love with her. It’s time I set my sights on reality...like someone who actually sees me as more than the help. Queen Helena Payne She thinks I don’t see her, but there’s nothing further from the truth. I see every inch of her, and I love riling her up just to see her storm off. She’s my assistant, the best one that’s ever existed. She’s also off-limits. As the queen of my country, there are expectations about who I should marry. Cameron Harley is not it. I may not be able to touch, but I can watch. I’ll keep her by my side for as long as I can. Only it seems my time is up. Now, I’m on a wild goose chase after the one I can’t let go.

Book The Dead Are Arising The Life of Malcolm X

Download or read book The Dead Are Arising The Life of Malcolm X written by Les Payne and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic, award-winning biography of Malcolm X that draws on hundreds of hours of personal interviews and rewrites much of the known narrative. Les Payne, the renowned Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative journalist, embarked in 1990 on a nearly thirty-year-long quest to create an unprecedented portrait of Malcolm X, one that would separate fact from fiction. The result is this historic, National Book Award–winning biography, which interweaves previously unknown details of Malcolm X’s life—from harrowing Depression-era vignettes to a moment-by-moment retelling of the 1965 assassination—into an extraordinary account that contextualizes Malcolm X’s life against the wider currents of American history. Bookended by essays from Tamara Payne, Payne’s daughter and primary researcher, who heroically completed the biography after her father’s death in 2018, The Dead Are Arising affirms the centrality of Malcolm X to the African American freedom struggle.

Book Transforming Townscapes

Download or read book Transforming Townscapes written by Neil Christie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This monograph details the results of a major archaeological project based on and around the historic town of Wallingford in south Oxfordshire. Founded in the late Saxon period as a key defensive and administrative focus next to the Thames, the settlement also contained a substantial royal castle established shortly after the Norman Conquest. The volume traces the pre-town archaeology of Wallingford and then analyses the town's physical and social evolution, assessing defences, churches, housing, markets, material culture, coinage, communications and hinterland. Core questions running through the volume relate to the roles of the River Thames and of royal power in shaping Wallingford's fortunes and identity and in explaining the town's severe and early decline."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were 26—not 13—British colonies in America in 1776. Of these, the six colonies in the Caribbean—Jamaica, Barbados, the Leeward Islands, Grenada and Tobago, St. Vincent; and Dominica—were among the wealthiest. These island colonies were closely related to the mainland by social ties and tightly connected by trade. In a period when most British colonists in North America lived less than 200 miles inland and the major cities were all situated along the coast, the ocean often acted as a highway between islands and mainland rather than a barrier. The plantation system of the islands was so similar to that of the southern mainland colonies that these regions had more in common with each other, some historians argue, than either had with New England. Political developments in all the colonies moved along parallel tracks, with elected assemblies in the Caribbean, like their mainland counterparts, seeking to increase their authority at the expense of colonial executives. Yet when revolution came, the majority of the white island colonists did not side with their compatriots on the mainland. A major contribution to the history of the American Revolution, An Empire Divided traces a split in the politics of the mainland and island colonies after the Stamp Act Crisis of 1765-66, when the colonists on the islands chose not to emulate the resistance of the patriots on the mainland. Once war came, it was increasingly unpopular in the British Caribbean; nonetheless, the white colonists cooperated with the British in defense of their islands. O'Shaughnessy decisively refutes the widespread belief that there was broad backing among the Caribbean colonists for the American Revolution and deftly reconstructs the history of how the island colonies followed an increasingly divergent course from the former colonies to the north.
