Book A Roman Villa and Other Iron Age and Roman Discoveries at Bredon s Norton Fiddington and Pamington Along the Gloucester Security of Supply Pipeline

Download or read book A Roman Villa and Other Iron Age and Roman Discoveries at Bredon s Norton Fiddington and Pamington Along the Gloucester Security of Supply Pipeline written by Tim G. Allen and published by Oxford University School of Ar. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of archaeological investigations along the 17km-long Gloucester Security of Supply Water Pipeline in the vicinity of Tewkesbury. The archaeological mitigation works were commissioned by Severn Trent Water; following evaluation of the whole route, three sites were chosen for excavation, at Fiddington and Pamington in Gloucestershire and at Bredon's Norton in Worcestershire. The site at Pamington revealed oval enclosures of mid-late Iron Age date, that at Fiddington elements of a rural settlement spanning all of the Roman period. At Bredon's Norton the pipeline cut through a series of Iron Age and Roman settlement enclosures and their internal features, and also included human burials of both periods. Unusually, one Iron Age burial was accompanied by a saw, and among the Roman burials was a cemetery of seven newborn infants. An unexpected discovery was the remains of a Roman bathhouse with a plunge pool flagged with stones and decorated with painted wall-plaster. This was later drained and had a central cistern inserted, while the loft was used to store grain. The building was destroyed by fire at the very end of the Roman period, resulting in the exceptional preservation of charred grain, together with fragmentary timbers, on the floor.

Book New Perspectives on the Medieval Agricultural Revolution

Download or read book New Perspectives on the Medieval Agricultural Revolution written by Helena Hamerow and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition is available on the LUP and OAPEN websites. Across Europe, the early medieval period saw the advent of new ways of cereal farming which fed the growth of towns, markets and populations, but also fuelled wealth disparities and the rise of lordship. These developments have sometimes been referred to as marking an ‘agricultural revolution’, yet the nature and timing of these critical changes remain subject to intense debate, despite more than a century of research. The papers in this volume demonstrate how the combined application of cutting-edge scientific analyses, along with new theoretical models and challenges to conventional understandings, can reveal trajectories of agricultural development which, while complementary overall, do not indicate a single period of change involving the extension of arable, the introduction of the mouldboard plough, and regular crop rotation. Rather, these phenomena become evident at different times and in different places across England throughout the period, and rarely in an unambiguously ‘progressive’ fashion. Presenting innovative bioarchaeological research from the ground-breaking Feeding Anglo-Saxon England project, along with fresh insights into ploughing technology, brewing, the nature of agricultural revolutions, and farming practices in Roman Britain and Carolingian Europe, this volume is a critical new contribution to environmental archaeology and medieval studies in England and beyond. Contributors: Amy Bogaard; Hannah Caroe; Neil Faulkner; Emily Forster; Helena Hamerow; Matilda Holmes; Claus Kropp; Lisa Lodwick; Mark McKerracher; Nicolas Schroeder; Elizabeth Stroud; Tom Williamson.

Book excerpt: The general perception of the west midlands region in the Roman period is that it was a backwater compared to the militarized frontier zone of the north, or the south of Britain where Roman culture took root early – in cities like Colchester, London ,and St Albans – and lingered late at cities like Cirencester and Bath with their rich, late Roman villa culture. The west midlands region captures the transition between these two areas of the ‘military’ north and ‘civilized’ south. Where it differed, and why, are important questions in understanding the regional diversity of Roman Britain. They are addressed by this volume which details the archaeology of the Roman period for each of the modern counties of the region, written by local experts who are or have been responsible for the management and exploration of their respective counties. These are placed alongside more thematic takes on elements of Roman culture, including the Roman Army, pottery, coins and religion. Lastly, an overview is taken of the important transitional period of the fifth and sixth centuries. Each paper provides both a developed review of the existing state of knowledge and understanding of the key characteristics of the subject area and details a set of research objectives for the future, immediate and long-term, that will contribute to our evolving understanding of Roman Britain. This is the third volume in a series – The Making of the West Midlands – that explores the archaeology of the English west midlands region from the Lower Palaeolithic onwards.

Book Oxford Before the University

Download or read book Oxford Before the University written by Anne Dodd and published by Oxford University School of Archaeology. This book was released on 2003 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of the city of Oxford is virtually synonymous with that of Oxford University. At the time of its emergence in the historical record, however, the university had taken root in what was already a thriving medieval town. The broad, shallow floodplain of the river Thames had encouraged the development of a major river crossing at Oxford, and this crossing provided both a focus for a permanent settlement, and the name of Oxford by which the settlement came to be known. This volume presents a comprehensive account of archaeological research into the origins and development of Oxford, from the 7th century, when St Frideswide's Minster was established, through the subsequent development of Oxford as a Saxon burh, or centre of defence against the Vikings, until the end of the 12th century, when the existence of a fledgling university is first apparent. It includes reports on some 18 previously unpublished archaeological sites. The chapters are treated thematically, and cover the Thames Crossing, the defences, and the developing town with its streets, properties, houses and churches. Each report is preceded by a synthesis and discussion of the evidence, which traces the development of theories about the Anglo-Saxon town and reviews the many problems that still exist. This discussion is supported by a gazetteer of relevant archaeological observations in the historic core of the city. There is also a detailed review of the development of the river Thames and its floodplain at Oxford.

Book Thornhill Farm Fairford Gloucestershire

Download or read book Thornhill Farm Fairford Gloucestershire written by David Jennings and published by Oxford University School of Archaeology. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 500 years, from the middle Iron Age to the early Roman period, the 1st gravel terrace of the river Thames at Thornhill Farm appears to have been lived in and worked as a cattle ranch. Extensive excavations by Oxford Archaeology between 1986 and 1989 revealed large parts of the settlement, including paddocks, stock enclosures and droveways, all designed to control and manage the herds of animals. Evidence for domestic houses points to small family groups living at the site and tending to the livestock. The surrounding gravel terraces and floodplain would have formed open pastureland, upon which lay a number of other settlements, some of which were also operating specialist pastoral economies. The settlement at Thornhill Farm was constantly being developed and remodelled until the early 2nd century AD, when it was replaced by a series of trackways and some of the earliest hay meadows in Britain. What happened to the inhabitants of Thornhill Farm at this time is unknown, but it seems likely that the whole settlement was subsumed into a larger agricultural estate based at neighbouring Claydon Pike. The excavations at Thornhill Farm formed part of a co-ordinated archaeological response to the threat posed by gravel extraction during the creation of the Cotswold Water Park. This book presents the results of this phase of work, and discusses the significance of the site within the local and regional landscape.

Book Castle Hill and Its Landscape

Download or read book Castle Hill and Its Landscape written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford Archaeology to undertook a varied programme of archaeological research in and around Castle Hill hillfort, Little Wittenham. This revealed one of the most significant later prehistoric settlements in the region. Aspects of the story, including some key finds, are now displayed in Project Timescape at the Northmoor Trust's HQ at Hill Farm. Around 1000 BC a late Bronze Age defensive enclosure was constructed on Castle Hill, while outside of this was a small settlement and a large midden. In the early Iron Age, the hilltop enclosure was replaced by the hillfort that still survives, and the settlement outside grew substantially. In the Roman period, a stone building, probably a villa, was built outside the hillfort, while towards the end of the Roman period the hillfort itself was reoccupied and the defences renewed. The site was abandoned sometime in the Saxon period, though elements of a mid-Saxon settlement were found further west at Long Wittenham.

Book Late Bronze Age Ritual and Habitation on a Thames Eyot at Whitecross Farm Wallingford

Download or read book Late Bronze Age Ritual and Habitation on a Thames Eyot at Whitecross Farm Wallingford written by Anne Marie Cromarty and published by Thames Valley Landscapes Monog. This book was released on 2006 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report presents the results of three excavations (Grim's Ditch, Whitecross Farm and Bradford's Brook) along the route of the Wallingford Bypass. Investigations at Whitecross Farm revealed that an important late Bronze Age site was located on a former river eyot. The results of these and earlier limited excavations are presented. Bringing all this evidence together has allowed the site to be more fully characterised as a place of 'high' status habitation and ritual during the 10th to 8th centuries BC."--BOOK JACKET.
