Book excerpt: This is the first monograph on the Australian genera of Elateridae - click beetles. The book deals with 74 genera, among which 14 are newly recognised. The volume documents the entire Australian fauna and provides lavish illustrations of representative species, and typical examples of the male and female genitalia for each genus. The phylogeny of the genera is analysed and there is a checklist of all described species and appropriate bibliographic and type locality details are given.

Book Volume 1 Morphology and Systematics Archostemata Adephaga Myxophaga Polyphaga partim

Download or read book Volume 1 Morphology and Systematics Archostemata Adephaga Myxophaga Polyphaga partim written by Rolf G. Beutel and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of four volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series which treat the systematics and biology of Coleoptera. With approximately 350,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. The beetle volumes will meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages (including anatomy), phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.

Book Canopy Arthropods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nigel E. Stork
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 592 pages

Download or read book Canopy Arthropods written by Nigel E. Stork and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As forests are cut down, altered and fragmented, the communities of organisms associated with them are also affected. Predictions of global species extinction rates based on forest loss range 1% to 10% each decade. Because arthropods comprise the largest component of animal species richness, it is inevitable that many arthropod species will become extinct. Millions of these species are thought to live in the forest canopy. During the last twenty years recognition of the importance of canopy arthropods to global biodiversity and the crucial roles arthropods play in forests has led to a revolution in the study and understanding of the arthropod community structure in the forest canopy. Recent advances have been greatly aided by the development of improved sampling techniques and new methods of access to the forest canopy. Canopy Arthropods brings together for the first time a wide range of the most recent studies of arthropods living in forest canopies and comes from a truly international team of contributors.

Book Arthropods of Tropical Forests

Download or read book Arthropods of Tropical Forests written by Yves Basset and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-23 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthropods are the most diverse group of organisms on our planet and the tropical rainforests represent the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. This book, written by 79 authors contributing to 35 chapters, aims to provide an overview of data collected during recent studies in Australia, Africa, Asia, and South America. The book focuses on the distribution of arthropods and their use of resources in the rainforest canopies, providing a basis for comparison between the forest ecosystems of the main biogeographical regions. Topics covered include the distribution of arthropods along vertical gradients and the relationship between the soil/litter habitat and the forest canopy. The temporal dynamics of arthropod communities, habitats and food selection are examined within and among tropical tree crowns, as are the effects of forest disturbance. This important book is a valuable addition to the literature used by community ecologists, conservation biologists entomologists, botanists and forestry experts.

Book Amazonian Floodplain Forests

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wolfgang J. Junk
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2010-09-27
  • ISBN : 9048187257
  • Pages : 620 pages

Download or read book Amazonian Floodplain Forests written by Wolfgang J. Junk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Amazonian floodplain forests are an unique and endangered ecosystem. The forests grow in areas that are annually flooded by large rivers during mean periods of up to 8 months and at depths of up to 10 m. Despite this severe stress, these forests consist of over 1,000 species and are by far the most species-rich floodplain forests worldwide. The trees show a broad range of morphological, anatomical, physiological, and phenological adaptations that enable them not only to survive the adverse environmental conditions, but also to produce large amounts of biomass when the nutrient levels in water and soils are sufficiently high. This is the case in the floodplains of white-water rivers, which are used for fisheries, agriculture, and cattle-ranching but which also have a high potential for the production of timber and non-timber products, when adequately managed. Latest research on ecophysiology gives insight how tree species adapt to the oscillating flood-pulse focusing on their photosynthesis, respiration, sap flow, biochemistry, phenology, wood and leave anatomy, root morphology and functioning, fruit chemistry, seed germination, seedling establishment, nitrogen fixation and genetic variability. Based on tree ages, lifetime growth rates and net primary production, new concepts are developed to improve the sustainability of traditional forest managements in the background of an integrated natural resource management. This is the first integrative book on the functioning and ecologically oriented use of floodplain forests in the tropics and sub-tropics.It provides fundamental knowledge for scientist, students, foresters and other professionals on their distribution, evolution and phytogeography. “This book is an excellent testimony to the interdisciplinary collaboration of a group of very dedicated scientists to unravel the functioning of the Amazonian Floodplain forests. They have brought together a highly valuable contribution on the distribution, ecology, primary production, ecophysiology, typology, biodiversity, and human use of these forests offering recommendations for sustainable management and future projects in science and development of these unique wetland ecosystems. It lays a solid scientific foundation for wetland ecologists, foresters, environmentalists, wetland managers, and all those interested in sustainable management in the tropics and subtropics.” Brij Gopal, Executive Vice President International Society for Limnology (SIL).
