Book A Revision of the Coleopterous Family Coccinellid Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Revision of the Coleopterous Family Coccinellid Classic Reprint written by George Robert Crotch and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Revision of the Coleopterous Family Coccinellidae Having spent many happy hours with the lamented author in the examination of the beautiful forms of which this book treats, I have felt it a pleasant thing to be associated, even in so humble a capacity, with its introduction to the Entomological world; and the little service I have had the privilege of rendering in the revision of the proof-sheets of the latter half of the work, has been quite a labour of love - enabling mo to offer a slight testimony of affection to a kind friend, and of my personal interest in that family of the Coleoptera which had first attracted my attention by the singular loveliness of its numerous species. A careful revision by the author himself would have been of incalculable value to the work; its usefulness would also have been greatly enhanced, had it been possible for him to have made those modifications and additions which his investigations in America afforded materials for. But, of course, this was not possible. There is, however, the consolation of knowing that the student can obtain the results of those later researches, in the author's memoir, entitled "Revision of the Coccinellidae of the United States," to which Mr Janson refers in the note which follows this preface. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the New World Species of the Tribe Donaciini of the Coleopterous Family Chrysomelidae The North American species of Donacia are very variable and um fortunately in most of the characters useful in distinguishing species and the study of them was at times laborious as a great 'number of specimens of most of the species had to be examined and studied to ascertain how far the variations go and also to become thoroughly acquainted with the difierent species. In addition carefully reading the numerous original descriptions of American Donacias described by French, English, German and American authors has taken a good deal of time. However, the result has been gratifying as a number of mistakes in the identification of some of the species were found and could be corrected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monograph of the Coleopterous Families Corylophidae and Sphaeriidae With Nine Plates The Plates I. To VIII. Have been prepared from the original drawings made by Mr. Matthews with his well-known accuracy, the figures having been most carefully and successfully transferred to zinc by Mr. J. Collin, of Newmarket, and I have to thank him for the trouble he has taken to make them accurate copies. Mr. Matthews has unfortunately left no note of the names of the species figured, and I have been unable to trace in his collection which are the actual specimens from which he made his drawings. Plate A of the metamorphosis has been copied from the figures accompanying M. Perris's memoirs, as acknowledged. Book Australian Ladybird Beetles Coleoptera Coccinellidae

Download or read book Australian Ladybird Beetles Coleoptera Coccinellidae written by Adam Slipinski and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by Australia's ladybird beetle specialist, Dr Adam Slipinski, illustrates Australia's diverse and fascinating ladybird beetle fauna — the commoner spotted species and the many others that are striped, glossy, and even very hairy. Most are predatory, but some are leaf feeders. This book reviews all 57 currently recognised genera of Australian Coccinellidae, recognising 260 valid described species, and including some genera and species newly described here. All genera are diagnosed, described and illustrated and a key to their identification is provided. Larvae of 30 species are described, illustrated and keyed. Sets of colour and black and white plates display these often beautifully colourful beetles, and their key features. The book is a must for all people interested in Australia's beetle fauna, in biocontrol and in natural resource management. This book was originally published in hardback by Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) in 2007 and is now available in a digital format.

Book Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles Coccinellidae

Download or read book Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles Coccinellidae written by Ivo Hodek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ladybirds are probably the best known predators of aphids and coccids in the world, though this greatly underestimates the diversity of their biology. Maximising their impact on their prey is an important element in modern conservation biological control of indigenous natural enemies in contrast to the classical approach of releasing alien species. Ivo Hodek is one of the most internationally respected experts on coccinellids who has researched these insects for his entire career. He has now brought together 14 scientists of international standing to author 12 chapters, making this book the definitive treatment of coccinellid biology and ecology. This volume covers the rapid scientific developments of recent years in the understanding of coccinellid phylogeny, the semiochemicals influencing their behaviour and of molecular genetics. Recent insights in relation to intraguild predation and the assessment of the predatory impact of coccinellids are also covered. Other special features of the volume are the extensive references covering the literature from both East and West and a taxonomic glossary of the up-to-date nomenclature for species of coccinellids as well as of other organisms mentioned in the text. While aimed at researchers, university teachers and agricultural entomologists, the book is readable and appropriate for others who just have a liking for these interesting and attractive insects.
