Book Area wide Integrated Pest Management

Download or read book Area wide Integrated Pest Management written by Jorge Hendrichs and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 1028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 98% of sprayed insecticides and 95% of herbicides reach a destination other than their target species, including non-target species, air, water and soil. The extensive reliance on insecticide use reduces biodiversity, contributes to pollinator decline, destroys habitat, and threatens endangered species. This book offers a more effective application of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, on an area-wide (AW) or population-wide (AW-IPM) basis, which aims at the management of the total population of a pest, involving a coordinated effort over often larger areas. For major livestock pests, vectors of human diseases and pests of high-value crops with low pest tolerance, there are compelling economic reasons for participating in AW-IPM. This new textbook attempts to address various fundamental components of AW-IPM, e.g. the importance of relevant problem-solving research, the need for planning and essential baseline data collection, the significance of integrating adequate tools for appropriate control strategies, and the value of pilot trials, etc. With chapters authored by 184 experts from more than 31 countries, the book includes many technical advances in the areas of genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, resistance management, and social sciences that facilitate the planning and implementing of area-wide strategies. The book is essential reading for the academic and applied research community as well as national and regional government plant and human/animal health authorities with responsibility for protecting plant and human/animal health.

Book Cost Analysis and Biological Ramifications for Implementing the Gypsy Moth Slow the Spread Program

Download or read book Cost Analysis and Biological Ramifications for Implementing the Gypsy Moth Slow the Spread Program written by Patrick C. Tobin and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gypsy moth Slow the Spread Program aims to reduce the rate of gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), spread into new areas in the United States. The annual budget for this program has ranged from $10-13 million. Changes in funding levels can have important ramifications to the implementation of this program, and consequently affect the rate of gypsy moth spread. This report presents a cost analysis for implementing the Slow the Spread Program across a range of funding levels, and predicts the consequent changes in gypsy moth spread rates. This work should be useful to program managers in implementing the Slow the Spread Program given yearly financial constraints, and more generally could serve as a template for barrier zone management programs against other nonindigenous species.

Book Chemical Ecology of Insects

Download or read book Chemical Ecology of Insects written by Jun Tabata and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects have evolved very unique and interesting tactics using chemical signals to survive. Chemical ecology illustrates the working of the biological network by means of chemical analyses. Recent advances in analytical technology have opened the way to a better understanding of the more complicated and abyssal interactions of insects with other organisms including plants and microbes. This book covers recent research on insects and chemical communications and presents the current status about challenges faced by chemical ecologists for the management of pests in agriculture and human health.

Book Use of Microbes for Control and Eradication of Invasive Arthropods

This book was released on 2008-10-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a diverse presentation about the use of arthropod-specific pathogens for control and eradication of invasive arthropod species. Basic concepts supporting use of pathogens for microbial control are covered as well as societal and environmental concerns.

Book Biological Invasions and Global Insect Decline

Download or read book Biological Invasions and Global Insect Decline written by Jonatan Rodríguez and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-09-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Invasions and Global Insect Decline offers the most updated knowledge on how invasive alien species affect insect diversity worldwide. The book provides ongoing research and the most relevant information, covering the main aspects of the impact of biological invasions as well as future insights on mitigation and consequences. It discusses how the introduction of all kinds of organisms, from bacteria and plants to vertebrates, affect current declines in insect diversity. The latter portion of the book delves into existent and future monitoring and management programs, including citizen science and regenerative ecology as socio-ecological solutions to combat these threats. Written and edited by international experts on invasion ecology and insect conservation, this book explores the role of global change and the introduction of invasive species in altering the structure of habitats and how this induces a global insect decline. This will be a valuable resource for entomologists, invasion biologists and other researchers in biodiversity conservation, as well as practitioners and stakeholders concerned about problematic invasive alien species and insect population decline. - Offers a concise vision of one of the main causes of insect extinctions in the Anthropocene - Discusses community ecology, insect conservation, species interactions, restoration ecology - Led by a team of editors whose expertise includes invasive alien species, invasion ecology, insect species diversity, and species conservation

Book Pheromone Communication in Moths

Download or read book Pheromone Communication in Moths written by Jeremy D. Allison and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common among moths is a mate-finding system in which females emit a pheromone that induces males to fly upwind along the pheromone plume. Since the chemical pheromone of the domesticated silk moth was identified in 1959, a steady increase in the number of moth species whose pheromone attractants have been identified now results in a rich base for review and synthesis. Pheromone Communication in Moths summarizes moth pheromone biology, covering the chemical structures used by the various lineages, signal production and perception, the genetic control of moth pheromone traits, interactions of pheromones with host-plant volatiles, pheromone dispersal and orientation, male pheromones and courtship, and the evolutionary forces that have likely shaped pheromone signals and their role in sexual selection. Also included are chapters on practical applications in the control and monitoring of pest species as well as case studies that address pheromone systems in a number of species and groups of closely allied species. Pheromone Communication in Moths is an invaluable resource for entomologists, chemical ecologists, pest-management scientists, and professionals who study pheromone communication and pest management.
