Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the economic impact of aid, but not in the sense that it questions the relevance of this objective, or tries to measure whether aid works or not. Download or read book Economics of Dryland Management written by John A. Dixon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have always had land in which the agricultural productivity is limited because there is not enough moisture. Systems of farming and burning often degrade dryland further until it is desert. Today, however, the problem is becoming much more serious. Over 20 per cent of the world's population lives in dryland areas, and unless action is taken drylands will increase dramatically. This book focuses on the people who live and .farm in the drylands, their use of land resources and the economic returns from their decisions. In a clear and thorough economic appraisal, the authors show how it is still possible to arrest the problem. Originally published in 1989

Download or read book Environment and Development An Economic Approach written by Jan Bojö and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second edition of a text based on a report commissioned by the Swedish International Development Authority (SID A). The financial grant from SIDA which made the work possible is hereby gratefully acknowledged. There are already many books on the market about environmental economics, some of them very good. What is special about this one? We do not claim to have obtained new results, but we have our own way of presenting the subject matter. In particular, we are of the opinion that policy failures are often overlooked as an obstacle to efficient environmental management. Although the main emphasis in this book is on project level analysis, it is essential that such analyses be linked to an understanding of the (dis)incentives for environmental improvements that general economic and particular environmental policies provide. Another essential feature of the book, although this is not unique, is the links provided between theory and empirical illustrations. We hope that this will illustrate to our readers the practical usefulness, but also the difficulties, of applying economics to environmental problems. In particular we hope that the text can be of interest to decision-makers, development programme personnel, teachers and the general public interested in how economics can contribute to better environmental decision-making. In principle, this book can be read by anyone interested in the subject matter, without any formal education in economics. However, some background in microeconomic theory makes the reading easier.

Download or read book Cost benefit Analysis of the Onchoceriasis Control Program OCP written by Ae-hy?ng Kim and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation World Bank Technical Paper No. 282. This volume presents a cost-benefit analysis of the Onchocerciasis (Riverblindness) Control Program (OCP) by examining its costs and the measurable economic benefits gained from the successful control of the disease. Widely recognized as one of the most successful disease control programs in the history of development assistance, the OCP projects the elimination of riverblindness throughout an eleven-country subregion of West Africa within the next eight years. This program, which began in the early 1970s, was the World Bank's first major venture into the health field. The Bank asked a large donor community of more than 20 governments and international organizations to make a long-term commitment of more than US$500 million to implement the OCP. This paper documents the benefits in economic terms from the large investment and shows that large-scale, well-conceived health interventions are clearly the business of development. The program improves the health and living environment of the rural population and frees previously oncho-ridden tracts of land for settlement and cultivation.

Download or read book New Evaluation Procedures for a New Generation of Water related Projects written by Ronald G. Cummings and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study presents the results of a large survey of more than 400 industrial firms in Russia conducted by the World Bank in mid-1994. The survey examined the role and organization of the enterprise sector, which is a key issue in transition economies, particularly in Russia, where a concerted attempt has been made to change ownership arrangements and hence corporate governance. More than half the firms surveyed are in the private sector; the rest remain in state hands or are partially privatized. A major focus of the book is to understand whether the Russian privatization has led to improvements in corporate governance. The authors identify some initial positive changes but also find that the manner in which privatization has occurred has not yet had a strong effect on the internal operations of Russian industrial firms. However, they do find evidence from their sample of significant growth in new firms. The volume examines the positive and negative aspects of restructuring, employment and workers compensation issues, budget constraints, the effects of privatization on employee behavior, and future prospects for Russian firms.
