Download or read book Addressing Offending Behaviour written by Simon Green and published by Willan. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offending behaviour is one of the most talked about issues in contemporary society. What can be done to stop people reoffending? What can be done to help people escape their criminal lifestyles? This book aims to review and analyse the different ways in which these questions are addressed in practice, drawing upon the expertise of academics and practitioners. The book provides a critical reference text for practitioners, students and researchers interested in devising the most effective means of addressing offending behaviour. Its focus is on the actual work undertaken with offenders, and draws upon generic issues of practice applicable across the voluntary, community and statutory sectors. Addressing Offending Behaviour aims to bridge the gap between practice and research. It explores a wide range of innovative techniques for offender intervention, along with some of the most challenging academic theories. It also considers the wider social, political and legal context in which this work takes place, and explores the values and bias which operate at both individual and institutional levels. It will be key reading for both students and practitioners involved in the fields of criminology and criminal justice, law, policing, probation, prisons, youth justice and social work.

Download or read book The supervision of community orders in England and Wales written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Criminal Justice Act 2003 introduced a new style of community sentence known as a community order. For offences committee after 1 April 2005, magistrates and judges have been able to tailor communty sentences to the severity of the offence and, at the same time address offending behaviour. The most common order contains a single requirement obliging the offender to complete specified number of unpaid work hours. The National Probation Service supervises all offenders subject to such orders, plus those released from prison on licence or given other sentences to be served in the community. This report examines how well they have been implemented and whether they are meeting sentencing objectives. It is felt the National Probation Service could improve efficiency by increasing the consistency with which community orders are implemented within local Probation Areas. Better data on capacity, costs and the number of orders completed as sentenced would help the Service demonstrate value for money. The report makes several recommendations to this end.
