I do express opinions and evaluations based on my own research, study, and experience. In those cases you should consider them opinions I believe to be factual. I have taken very little poetic license whilst writing this book. The Reluctant Heretic is a distillation of the wisdom and knowledge I’ve gained over a lifetime. It is applied spiritual philosophy. It is what I use in my everyday life to be happier, more successful, and improve my relationship with others. I believe you’ll find the information in this book interesting and helpful. Life is a Journey, not a destination. Enjoy the ride. Love, Lucifer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silenced for 1,600 years, the "heretics" speak for themselves in this account of the Priscillianist controversy that began in fourth-century Spain. In a close examination of rediscovered texts, Virginia Burrus provides an unusual opportunity to explore heresy from the point of view of the followers of Priscillian and to reevaluate the reliability of the historical record. Her analysis takes into account the concepts of gender, authority, and public and private space that informed established religion's response to this early Christian movement. Priscillian, who began his career as a lay teacher with particular influence among women, faced charges of heresy along with accusations of sorcery and sexual immorality following his ordination to the episcopacy. He was executed along with several of his followers circa 386. His purportedly "gnostic" doctrines produced controversy and division within the churches of Spain, dissension that continued into the early decades of the fifth century. Burrus's thorough and wide-ranging study enlarges upon previous scholarship, particularly in bringing a feminist perspective to bear on the gendered constructions of religious orthodoxies, making a valuable contribution to the recent commentary that explores new ways of looking at early Christian controversies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret Life: Being the Book of a Heretic "The very Devil's in the moon for mischief: There's not a day, the longest, not the twenty-first of June, Sees half the mischief in a quiet way On which three single hours of moonlight smile." At my age, alas! one no longer gets into mischief, either by moonlight or at mid summer, and yet to-day all the tricksey spirits of the invisible world are supposed to be abroad - tangling the horses' manes, souring the milk maid's cream, setting lovers by the ears. Some such frisky Puck stirs even peaceable middle-aged blood at this season to mild little secret sins, such as beginning a diary in which to set down one's private naughty views - the heresies one has grown too staid and cautious to give speech to any longer. Book excerpt: Reis and his master, the Jewish metallurgist Joachim Gans, return to England after the failed 1585 expedition. It was called “failed” because no large veins of copper were found. Once docked in Portsmouth, Reis hopes to accompany his master to London, to meet with Queen Elizabeth I. But Joachim takes a detour and returns him to his Uncle Allyn’s farm in Surrey. Reis gets into trouble and it isn’t until Joachim returns for him after a month that he is reprieved. After his meetings in London, Joachim finds himself on the road again with his young apprentice. In the bustling city of Bristol, Joachim plans to develop new ways to make saltpeter, a necessary item for the English Navy. But trouble begins when Joachim is confronted about his religious beliefs, denying Jesus Christ as the Son of God. He is taken to trial. The trial continues in London with Elizabeth’s Privy Council. But the high offices are reluctant to condemn him, for they aren’t sure what to do with a Jew. Joachim decides to return to his native land of Bohemia, leaving Reis working on the horse farm of a wealthy gentleman, building a new life for himself. Sequel to Joachim’s Magic.

Book The Heretic

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Baer
  • Publisher : Publishamerica Incorporated
  • Release : 2004-04-05
  • ISBN : 9781413711035
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book The Heretic written by William Baer and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2004-04-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Heretic is a major literary achievement, putting the author in the ranks of Mauriac, Bernanos, Greene, Waugh, and Walker Percy. Flannery O'Connor believed that all true literature is anagogic, by which she meant that the events of the story should point beyond themselves to the ultimate meaning of life, and The Heretic is both literature and anagogic. It is also the kind of novel which, once begun, cannot be put down until the reader has finished it. It also has that test of the great in that its effects linger in the mind and imagination long afterwards. Baer has wisely anchored spiritual matters in the human, all-too-human setting of the sinful heart which gives added power to the story he so artfully tells. I can't remember when I have enjoyed a new novel more."-- Ralph McInerny
