Book excerpt: Nizari Ismailis are one of most active Muslim communities in academic education and knowledge production in the fields of Islamic studies and humanities. For this purpose, the community runs two academic institutions based in London: The Institute of Ismaili Studies and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations. Drawing on sociological approaches to religion and knowledge, this study examines the academic discourse of these two institutes an the religious subjectivities of their international body of students. It shows that the Ismaili community is navigating challenges along three axes: its relationship to secular modernity, to mainstream Islam, and to itself (its own history and identity). The Ismaili response to this three-dimensional challenge is interpreted as a process of reflexive modernization, whereby Islam is discursively reconceptualized as culture rather than religion and uncertainty is internalized into individual religious subjectivity.

Since a Eurocentric view on Islam often fails to recognize the complexities of Muslim communities while emphasizing the Muslim faith as incompatible with "modernity", the current study of the Ismaʿili branch serves as an example of Muslim practices that adapt and adjust its divine principles to a modern and secular society while maintain its unique religious identity. Important values of everyday life are observed in connection to Ulrich Beck’s and Anthony Gidden’s "reflexive modernity" theory as a process that encompasses old and new traditions while adapting ambiguous and pluralist forms of contemporary societies. This thesis begins with a depiction of the historical background describing Ismaʿili religious principles in order to grasp a general understanding of this specific community. Chapter three discusses significant literature relating to the research topic, examining publications about the Ismaʿili discourse and the Aga Khan’s ideology. Furthermore the author investigates ethnographic research about Ismaʿili communities living in European and Canadian societies, as a form of comparative literature. Chapter four discusses theories of modernity, late modernity and post-modernity in relation to pluralism thoughts that are relevant in the study of "progressive Muslims" and "modern" Islamic approaches. Subsequently, chapter five illustrates the methodological considerations serving this study and theapproach of semi-structured life-history interviews as a narrative research design. The study concludes with the findings and analysis sections in chapter six and seven which focus on main values of the studied narratives and their perception of modernity in connection to the chosen theoretical framework.

Firstly, he examines why many Westerners dismiss Islam’s vast intellectual, social, theological and cultural heritage as flawed, violent, rigid and fanatical, despite knowing virtually nothing about it. He usefully traces the genesis of this attitude, focusing on how scholars such as Weber, Habermas and others have helped to consolidate the West’s view of itself as civilised, superior, developed and progressive, and how the demonisation of Islam acts as a necessary foil for these notions. Secondly, he explains that Islam is subject to a variety of interpretive choices and schools of thought ranging from legalistic fundamentalism, through rigid rationalism, to spiritual Sufism. By treating Islam, secularity and modernity as distinct and separate, rather than as interconnected and overlapping, Abdessalem makes no attempt to reconcile Islam with modernity or secularity, nor does he place one in opposition to the other. Instead, he looks at the interconnections between these broad and complex subjects. Abdessalem’s analysis is useful in encouraging us to rethink both modernity and Islam, and their relationship with each other. In this rethinking lies the potential for a better understanding of the geopolitics of what is often called ‘the Muslim world’, including the MENA region.
