Refined theories, with these effects taken into account, have been pioneered by Bresse, Lord Rayleigh, Timoshenko, Eric Reissner, Mindlin and others. These refined theories have been fruitfully applied in recent decades in both theoretical and prac tical solid mechanics problems. The European Mechanics Committee approved holding EURO~illCH Colloquium 219 on "Refined Dynamical Theories of Beams, Plates and Shells and Their Applications" for reviewing the recent devel opments, providing guidelines for future investigations and presenting a forum for current work of younger researchers. The Colloquium was held during September 23 - 26, 1986, at the Uni versitat-Gesamthochschule Kassel, in the city of Kassel, Federal Republic of Germany. 45 Representatives of academia and industry, from nine European countries, as well as from Israel, USA and India participated in this Colloquium. IV 36 lectures were presented during the five sessions: Session A: Theory of Vibrations of Plates and Shells Session B: Various Approaches for Dynamical Problems of Beams Session C: Random Vibrations and Dynamic Stability Session D: Vibrations of Composite Structures Session E: Special Dynamical Problems of Beams, Plates and Shells The papers in this volums were divided into two parts: papers of invited keynote lectures and those of the invited contributed lectures.

Book excerpt: A consistent theory for thin anisotropic layered structures is developed starting from asymptotic analysis of 3D equations in linear elasticity. The consideration is not restricted to the traditional boundary conditions along the faces of the structure expressed in terms of stresses, originating a new type of boundary value problems, which is not governed by the classical Kirchhoff-Love assumptions. More general boundary value problems, in particular related to elastic foundations are also studied.The general asymptotic approach is illustrated by a number of particular problems for elastic and thermoelastic beams and plates. For the latter, the validity of derived approximate theories is investigated by comparison with associated exact solution. The author also develops an asymptotic approach to dynamic analysis of layered media composed of thin layers motivated by modeling of engineering structures under seismic excitation.

Chapter 2 on nonlinear continuum mechanics is entirely new. Material on time dependent problems from Chapter 8 of the first edition is absorbed into Chapters 4 through 8 of the new edition. Finally, Chapter 11 in the second edition is entirely new and devoted to least-squares finite element models of viscous incompressible fluids. Chapter 12 of the second edition is enlarged to contain finite element models of viscoelastic beams. In general, all of the chapters of the second edition contain additional explanations, detailed example problems, and additional exercise problems. Although all of the segments are in Fortran, the logic used in these Fortran programs is transparent and can be used in Matlab or C++ versions of the same. Thus the new edition more than replaces the first edition, and it is hoped that it is acquired by the library of every institution of higher learning as well as serious finite element analysts. The book may be used as a textbook for an advanced course (after a first course) on the finite element method or the first course on nonlinear finite element analysis. A solutions manual is available on request from the publisher to instructors who adopt the book as a textbook for a course.

The theory of layered shells of revolution under the quasistatic action of loading and temperature is the subject of this book. The shells treated here are in general of an asymmetric sandwich structure. A linear theory is developed which allows for a transition to shells with less layers, that is two-layered and homogeneous structures.The first half of the book is concerned with orthotropic elastic shells. In particular, it includes the membrane theory of cylindrical, spherical and conical shells, and the bending theory of cylindrical shells, storage tanks and pressure-vessels. In each of the numerical examples considered, an attempt is made to map different regimes of structural behaviour.The second half of the book is devoted to viscoelastic shells. First the time-invariant hereditary theory is presented, describing the response of viscoelastic materials. According to the correspondence principle of this theory the actual viscoelastic shell may be replaced by a conjugate elastic one. In this way many of the results from the first half of the book can be put to good use even for viscoelastic shells. The time-dependent material characteristics are taken into account by means of the time-temperature principle.In an appendix (Part VI), the mathematical prerequisites are presented. With viscoelasticity comes the need to employ further mathematical disciplines; integral equations and integral transformations are usually encountered. Here, instead, a different concept has been chosen, the distributional concept of Laurent Schwartz, which allows many problems to be tackled in a simple formal way. In discussing the distribution theory, a level accessible to a technical reader has been maintained.The book is intended as a textbook for students and teachers of structural and aeronautical engineering. The book will also appeal to a broad range of practising engineers working in areas of aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering, as well as to those working for firms dealing with shell structures.

The results may be readily used by practicing engineers dealing with stiffened composite shells with cutouts. Several shell forms viz. cylindrical shell, hypar shell, conoidal shell, spherical shell, saddle shell, hyperbolic paraboloidal shell and elliptic paraboloidal shell are considered in the book. The dynamic characteristics of stiffened composite shells with cutout are described in terms of the natural frequency and mode shapes. The size of the cutouts and their positions with respect to the shell centre are varied for different edge constraints of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite shells. The effects of these parametric variations on the fundamental frequencies and mode shapes are considered in detail. The information regarding the behavior of stiffened shells with cutouts for a wide spectrum of eccentricity and boundary conditions for cross ply and angle ply shells may be used as design aids for structural engineers. The book is a significant contribution to the existing literature from the point of view of both industrial importance and academic interest.
