Book A Reconstruction of the Old Latin Text Or Texts of the Gospels Used by Saint Augustine

Download or read book A Reconstruction of the Old Latin Text Or Texts of the Gospels Used by Saint Augustine written by Christian Hoyer Milne and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This attempts the reconstruction of the fourfold Gospel as quoted by Augustine in the first 50 of his 118 works, the last being dated A.D. 400. Since it is generally agreed that he regularly used the St. Jerome's revision of the Latin Gospels, known as the Vulgate Gospels (published A.D. 383), during the remaining 30 years of his life, the present inquiry is limited to the extant works of Augustine written during the earlier period of his authorship, 385-400, comprising of 1941 Gospel quotations. The vestiges of Old-Latin in Augustine's non-Vulgate Gospel quotations are compared with the known African texts, e and k.

Book The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke

Download or read book The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke written by Annette Weissenrieder and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Codex Vercellensis is one of the great treasures of the Vercelli library, containing the four Gospels. Written during the fourth century, it is the oldest remaining Latin manuscript of the Greek New Testament and one of the most important witnesses to the early understanding of the Gospels. In this edition, Weissenrieder and Visinoni provide the Latin text of the work parallel to spectral images, indicating abbreviations, lineation, foliation and staurograms as well as a (reconstructed) critical edition with references to the most important texts of the Old Latin tradition as well as Greek and Syriac manuscripts and a commentary to this unique Latin translation. The analyses involved will be: (1) digital methods, (2) philological and theological, (3) translation theories in antiquity as well as (4) genealogical. The authors call into question assumptions about the text preserved in the manuscript, arguing that it represents an early stage of the Latin Gospels. The manuscript will be examined in light of its wide-ranging cultural and historical context. As such, the project aligns itself methodologically with the field of manuscript studies and attempts to integrate the specialized expertise of various disciplines in the study of a single object.

Book Augustine s Text of John

Download or read book Augustine s Text of John written by H. A. G. Houghton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sort of Bible did Augustine have? How did he quote from it - and was he accurate? Do Augustine's biblical citations transmit readings not found in any surviving manuscripts? This book is part of a major project on the Old Latin versions of the Gospel according to John, and uses Augustine as a test-case to examine the importance of the evidence provided by the Church Fathers for the text of the Gospels. The early history of the Latin Bible is reconstructed from Augustine's comments in his treatise De doctrina christiana (On Christian teaching). Details are assembled from sermons, letters, and other writings to show how Augustine and his contemporaries used the Bible in the liturgy of the Church, public debates, and in composing their own works. Augustine's own methods of citing the Bible are analysed, and features are identified which are characteristic of citations produced from memory rather than read from a gospel codex. The second part of the book is a chronological survey of the biblical text in Augustine's works, showing how he switched from using the older versions of the Gospel to the revised text of Jerome, which later became known as the Vulgate. Finally, a verse by verse commentary is provided on all the significant readings in Augustine's text of John, assessing their significance for the history of the Latin Bible, and in some cases the Greek tradition as well. Details are also given of Augustine's exegesis of particular verses of the Gospel, making this an indispensable handbook for biblical scholars and church historians alike.

Book The Latin New Testament

Download or read book The Latin New Testament written by H. A. G. Houghton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Latin is the language in which the New Testament was copied, read, and studied for over a millennium. The remains of the initial 'Old Latin' version preserve important testimony for early forms of text and the way in which the Bible was understood by the first translators. Successive revisions resulted in a standard version subsequently known as the Vulgate which, along with the creation of influential commentaries by scholars such as Jerome and Augustine, shaped theology and exegesis for many centuries. Latin gospel books and other New Testament manuscripts illustrate the continuous tradition of Christian book culture, from the late antique codices of Roman North Africa and Italy to the glorious creations of Northumbrian scriptoria, the pandects of the Carolingian era, eleventh-century Giant Bibles, and the Paris Bibles associated with the rise of the university. In The Latin New Testament, H. A. G. Houghton provides a comprehensive introduction to the history and development of the Latin New Testament. Drawing on major editions and recent advances in scholarship, he offers a new synthesis which brings together evidence from Christian authors and biblical manuscripts from earliest times to the late Middle Ages. All manuscripts identified as containing Old Latin evidence for the New Testament are described in a catalogue, along with those featured in the two principal modern editions of the Vulgate. A user's guide is provided for these editions and the other key scholarly tools for studying the Latin New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A most welcome edition and translation... The introduction is clear and straightforward... The Latin is beautifully printed and the notes, though relatively spare in extent, are informative; the translation is formal but modern' -Journal of Theological StudiesDe bono coniugali and De sancta virginitate were written in the same year (AD 401). In them Augustine rebuffs the Manichees, who argued that marriage was evil, and the followers of Jovinian, who argued that the married state was as meritorious as that of virginity. This edition includes the Latin text, a new translation, an introduction, and explanatory notes.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Augustine

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Augustine written by Eleonore Stump and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard to overestimate the importance of the work of Augustine of Hippo, both in his own period and in the subsequent history of Western philosophy. Until the thirteenth century, when he may have had a competitor in Thomas Aquinas, he was the most important philosopher of the medieval period. Many of his views, including his theory of the just war, his account of time and eternity, his understanding of the will, his attempted resolution of the problem of evil, and his approach to the relation of faith and reason, have continued to be influential up to the present time. In this 2001 volume of specially-commissioned essays, sixteen scholars provide a wide-ranging and stimulating contribution to our understanding of Augustine, covering all the major areas of his philosophy and theology.
