Book A Sanskrit Grammar for Students

Download or read book A Sanskrit Grammar for Students written by Arthur Anthony Macdonell and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This fresh typesetting of Prof. Macdonell`s work explains the mechanics of the Sanskrit language`s euphonic combinations (sandhi), declension, conjugation, nominal stem formation and compounds, etc., with insights into the syntactical arrangement of Sanskrit sentence. Elaborate Description It is an altogether fresh `reprint` of the eminent Orientalist, Arthur Macdonell`s A Sanskrit Grammar (1927 edition: Oxford). Which, ever since its first appearance, has been widely acclaimed: both in India and elsewhere in the world, as an authentic, at the once relevant account of classical Sanskrit. Projecting, with well-chosen examples, a whole mass of grammatical forms to be met within the post-Vedic Sanskrit literature, the author systematically explains the mechanics of its euphonic combinations (sandhi), declension, conjugation, nominal stem formation and compounds, and a lot else - with complete insights into the syntactical arrangement of Sanskrit sentence. Supported by several information-packaged appendices, the book also carries a brilliant resume of the Sanskrit grammatical tradition going back to the 5th century BC. Now typeset anew with the latest technological aids, the late Macdonell`s work today remains as much indispensable to the students of Sanskrit as to the scholars, who seek to discover for themselves the splendour of its literary classics.

Book Critical Studies in Indian Grammarians I

Download or read book Critical Studies in Indian Grammarians I written by Madhav Deshpande and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the historical study of the Indian grammarian tradition, a line of demarcation can often be drawn between the conformity of a system with the well-known grammar of Pāṇini and the explanatory effectiveness of that system. One element of Pāṇini’s grammar that scholars have sometimes struggled to bring across this line of demarcation is the theory of homogeneity, or sāvarṇya, which concerns the final consonants in Pāṇini’s reference catalog, as well as phonetic similarities between sounds. While modern Sanskrit scholars understand how to interpret and apply Pāṇini’s homogeneity, they still find it necessary to unravel the history of varying interpretations of the theory in subsequent grammars. Madhav Deshpande’s The Theory of Homogeneity provides a thorough account of the historical development of the theory. Proceeding first to study this conception in the Pāṇinian tradition, Deshpande then passes on to other grammatical systems. Deshpande gives attention not only to the definitions of homogeneity in these systems but also the implementation of the theory in those respective systems. Even where definitions are identical, the concept may be applied quite differently, in which cases Deshpande examines by considering the historical relationships among the various systems.

Book Creating the Perfect Language Sanskrit Grammarians Poetry and the Exegetical Tradition

Download or read book Creating the Perfect Language Sanskrit Grammarians Poetry and the Exegetical Tradition written by Victor Bartholomew D'Avella and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My general findings point toward a much more vibrant and multifaceted exegetical tradition than has generally been assumed in secondary literature. Some commentators were driven by the traditional association of grammar with the Vedas and held the opinions of Patañjali as sacrosanct — a trend that gained momentum over time — whereas others felt free to turn to different grammars and interpretations of the Astādhyāyī not supported by, or even in contradiction to, Patañjali. Furthermore, the non-Pāninian grammarians contributed more to the history of Sanskrit than has generally been assumed, and we must continue to read and publish new texts in order to obtain a more representative picture.
