Book A Rapid Assessment of the Humid Forests of South Central Chuquisaca Bolivia

Download or read book A Rapid Assessment of the Humid Forests of South Central Chuquisaca Bolivia written by Thomas S. Schulenberg and published by Conservation International. This book was released on 1997 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chuquisaca and Tarija regions of Bolivia encompass one of the most dramatic shifts in flora and vegetation anywhere along the eastern Andes. But biological information for this area has remained very sketchy. An interdisciplinary team of biologists surveyed the south-central Chuquisaca in May of 1995. They found that the region contains one of the largest remaining uninterrupted tracts of Bosque Tucuman-Boliviano wet forest, as well as a number of endemic species, but also suffers from heavy development pressures.

Book A Rapid Biological Assessment of North Lorma Gola and Grebo National Forests Liberia

Download or read book A Rapid Biological Assessment of North Lorma Gola and Grebo National Forests Liberia written by Peter Hoke and published by Conservation International. This book was released on 2007 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberia s national forests are among the last refuges in West Africa for large migrating mammals. This volume summarizes the findings of a biodiversity survey of three forests as part of the Liberia Forestry Initiative, an effort to rehabilitate and reform Liberia s threatened woodlands. The survey found each forest to harbor a wealth of biodiversity and a significant number of species of conservation concern. Researchers here document the discovery of six species new to science, report eighteen newfindings for Liberia, and present conservation recommendations based on survey results."

Book A Rapid Marine Biodiversity Assessment of the Coral Reefs of Northwest Madagascar

Download or read book A Rapid Marine Biodiversity Assessment of the Coral Reefs of Northwest Madagascar written by Sheila Anne McKenna and published by Conservation International. This book was released on 2005 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, #31 in the series, reports the results of a marine survey in 2002 off the northwestern coast of Madagascar. This marine area is one that many conservationists think has the greatest potential in all of Madagascar for the development of both ecotourism and marine protected areas. The survey documented a rich variety of coral, mollusk, and fish species, and the report makes further recommendations for conservation in the region."

Book Mammals of South America Volume 2

Download or read book Mammals of South America Volume 2 written by Alfred L. Gardner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 1363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast terrain between Panama and Tierra del Fuego contains some of the worlds richest mammalian fauna, but until now it has lacked a comprehensive systematic reference to the identification, distribution, and taxonomy of its mammals. The first such book of its kind, Mammals of South America both summarizes existing information and encourages further research of the mammals indigenous to the region. It includes identification keys and brief descriptions of each order, family, and genus. Species accounts include taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, keys to identification, distributions with maps and a gazetteer of marginal localities, lists of recognized subspecies, brief summaries of natural history information, and discussions of issues related to taxonomic interpretations.

Download or read book Antpittas and Gnateaters written by Harold Greeney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 1199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative handbook, part of the Helm Identification Guide series, looks in detail at the beautiful antpittas. Elusive study organisms for ornithologists and highly prized additions to the birder's life-list, the antpittas (Grallariidae) and gnateaters (Conopophagidae) are among the most poorly known Neotropical bird groups. This authoritative handbook is the first book dedicated solely to these two families, combining an exhaustive review of more than two centuries of literature with original observations by the author and many knowledgeable contributors. Antpittas and Gnateaters provides a thorough guide to the identification and ecology of these birds, with detailed maps accompanying the text. A series of superb plates illustrate most of the 156 recognized taxa; supplemented by more than 250 colour photographs, the immature plumages and natural history of many species are depicted for the first time. This book is the ultimate reference on these remarkable and beautiful birds, and an indispensable addition to the libraries of researchers and birders for many years to come.

Book Footprints in the Jungle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ian A. Bowles
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-02-22
  • ISBN : 0198029063
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Footprints in the Jungle written by Ian A. Bowles and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical forests have seen a tremendous growth in logging, mining, and oil and gas development over the past decades. These industries and their infrastructure, including roads and power lines, have a tremendous impact on the environment and often conflict with the growing concern for conservation, particularly the conservation of tropical biodiversity. However, development in the tropics is extremely important economically, both for developing and industrialized nations, and Footprints in the Jungle is an invaluable reference in this important and highly politicized debate. This volume looks at new approaches that lessen the impact of development. It collects numerous case studies by project managers, advocates, and researchers from major international companies, development agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations. It also examines the environmental and social impact of resource development, proposes a rigorous "best practices" approach, and analyzes a number of challenging technical, environmental, social, and legal issues.

The final chapter presents a major synthesis by some of the world's leading cloud forest researchers, which summarizes our current knowledge and considers the sustainability of these forests in an ever-changing world. This book presents state-of-the-art knowledge concerning cloud forest occurrence and status, as well as the biological and hydrological value of these unique forests. The presentation is academic but with a firm practical emphasis. It will serve as a core reference for academic researchers and students of environmental science and ecology, as well as practitioners (natural resources management, forest conservation) and decision makers at local, national, and international levels.

Book Mammals of South America Volume 2

Download or read book Mammals of South America Volume 2 written by James L. Patton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 1363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second installment in a planned three-volume series, this book provides the first substantive review of South American rodents published in over fifty years. Increases in the reach of field research and the variety of field survey methods, the introduction of bioinformatics, and the explosion of molecular-based genetic methodologies have all contributed to the revision of many phylogenetic relationships and to a doubling of the recognized diversity of South American rodents. The largest and most diverse mammalian order on Earth—and an increasingly threatened one—Rodentia is also of great ecological importance, and Rodents is both a timely and exhaustive reference on these ubiquitous creatures. From spiny mice and guinea pigs to the oversized capybara, this book covers all native rodents of South America, the continental islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Caribbean Netherlands off the Venezuelan coast. It includes identification keys and descriptions of all genera and species; comments on distribution; maps of localities; discussions of subspecies; and summaries of natural, taxonomic, and nomenclatural history. Rodents also contains a detailed list of cited literature and a separate gazetteer based on confirmed identifications from museum vouchers and the published literature.
