Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER SEVEN A FINISH FIGHT FOR A BIRTHRIGHT TO behold the inroads of autumn upon the foliage of a noble forest; to watch a rose fade and see its withered petals fall to earth; to see a beast in its death throes; to witness the last agony of a fellow-mortal, even though he be a stranger and nothing to you in the world--any of these is a sufficiently saddening incident to a man of average susceptibility. Happily enough, therefore, it has come to few men to witness the final dissolution of a people, even though that people be a savage tribe every page of whose history is dark with deeds of barbarism. Such, however, has been my lot, and the scenes, incidents, and characters of the dread spectacle are as fresh on my mind to-day as if they were of yesterday. In the autumn of '77 I bought my first herd of cattle at Cooper Lake on Laramie Plains, west of the main range of the Rockies. The country lying between the Union Pacific Railway and the Platte was then fairly well stocked and the best ranges occupied. But, up to that time, the North Platte River had stood the dead line between the Sioux and the ranchmen, a dead line never crossed by ranchmen, except in occasional trailing parties in pursuit (and usually a hopeless pursuit) of stolen horses taken by the raiding Sioux. All of the two thirds of Wyoming lying to the north of the North Platte River, all of the two thirds of Montana lying to the east of a line drawn through Bozeman and Fort Benton, all of the two Dakotas west of Fort Pierre and Yankton, and all of the northwest quarter of the State of Nebraska--a vast area of roughly three hundred thousand square miles, greater in extent than all of New England with the States of New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West...

Book Recollections of a Western Ranchman

Download or read book Recollections of a Western Ranchman written by William French and published by High Lonesome Books. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first limited American printing in 1928, "Recollections of a Western Ranchman" has been largely unavailable and, even when found, affordable only by collectors. Herein is Captain French's original volume in a reader's edition, the story of a man who lived through the wildest years of the New Mexico/Arizona border country to leave us a frontier memoir with a human voice. In the midst of the final astonishing stand of Geronimo and his renegades, French displays a perceptive and balanced admiration for both the soldiers and the Apache tribe. At the siege of Elfego Baca, the author deftly delineates the hero from the bullies. When the outlaw Black Jack steals his horses, the Captain delightedly steals them back. And nobody has written better of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch than French. Finally, his descriptions of ranch life and the Southwest wilderness are those of a natural raconteur who still held to the facts. Never the hero, though often heroic, French saw it all, with balance, perception, and a droll British wit.

Book A Ranchman s Recollections Abridged Annotated

Download or read book A Ranchman s Recollections Abridged Annotated written by Frank S. Hastings and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 1921-01-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not the memoir of just any old cowboy. This is Notre Dame-educated Frank Hastings, at one time known to nearly every cattleman in the United States. Hastings early 20th century book on the ranching and packing industries is all at once fascinating, well-written, and often humorous. Born during the American Civil War, he has a boy's memories of that period but the meat of this book, so to speak, is the cattle industry and early ranching. He relates wonderful stories not only of the cattle industry but of famous people he knew, cowboys, Civil War stories, the origins of famous breeds, and more. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE by clicking the cover above. Buy it today!

Glancing at the boot he dropped it back into the dish water, moved swiftly to Red's bunk, and in a moment a twin to his own shirt adorned his back. To make matters more certain he deposited on Red's blankets an old shirt of Lee Hop's, and then sauntered over to Skinny's bunk.
