Book Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks

Download or read book Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks written by Louis Valentine Pirsson and published by Legare Street Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1904, this book is a seminal work in the field of petrology. In it, the authors describe a new system for classifying igneous rocks based on their chemical and mineral makeup, a system that is still widely used today. With its rigorous analysis and detailed descriptions, this book is a must-read for anyone working in the field of geology. Book Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks

Download or read book Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks written by Whitman Cross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks: Based on Chemical and Mineral Characters With a Systematic Nomenclature In this review no attempt will be made to give a complete historical sketch of petrography, but rather to study in a some what critical way the course of development through which the science has passed, to analyze the more important contributions to its advancement, and especially to examine the principles nominally applied in formulating schemes of classification and to test the methods of application as to their logical directness and consistency. From some cause the existing systems are commonly regarded as unsatisfactory and inadequate. And this condition indicates either that the principles of classification have not been wisely chosen or that they have been incorrectly applied. Book Igneous Rocks A Classification and Glossary of Terms

Download or read book Igneous Rocks A Classification and Glossary of Terms written by R. W. Le Maitre and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of field and microscope studies, and more recent quantitative geochemical analyses have resulted in a vast, and sometimes overwhelming, array of nomenclature and terminology associated with igneous rocks. This book presents a complete classification of igneous rocks based on all the recommendations of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Subcommission on the Systematics of Igneous Rocks. The glossary of igneous terms has been fully updated since the first edition and now includes 1637 entries, of which 316 are recommended by the Subcommission. Incorporating a comprehensive bibliography of source references for all the terms included in the glossary, this book is an indispensable reference guide for all geologists studying igneous rocks, either in the field or the laboratory. It presents a standardised and widely accepted naming scheme that will allow geologists to interpret terminology in the primary literature and provide formal names for rock samples based on petrographic analyses. It is also supported by a website with downloadable code for chemical classifications.

Book Stable Mineral Assemblages of Igneous Rocks

Download or read book Stable Mineral Assemblages of Igneous Rocks written by A. Rittmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the results of a lengthy study which Professor ALFRED RITTMANN began some thirty years ago. The relationship between the chemical and mineralogical composition of igneous rocks is established as far as is possible. Petrographers will appreciate that this problem is extremely complex, particularly since this relationship forms the basis of the classification and nomenclature of igneous rocks. The ingenious scheme of calculation of the CI.P.W. norm system is essentially chemical in nature. The compositions of the stoichiometrically ideal "normative minerals" do not correspond to those of the constituent minerals found in rocks. Although the "norm" is not intended to equal the "mode" or actual mineral composition of a rock, at least a qualitative agreement between the norm and the mode is desirable. For a number of rocks and rock groups, especially the leucocratic and silicic rocks, the deviation of the norm from the mode is generally within tolerable limits. For the melanocratic and highly subsilicic rocks, on the other hand, the CI.P. W. scheme of calculation too often yields results which fail to reflect the observed mineral composition. The anomalies produced in the cal culation of extremely subsilicic volcanic rocks have recently been briefly discussed by F. CHAVES and H. S. YODER, JR. (1971).
