Book excerpt: Because the capture of 3D facial form for people with medical conditions has become a practical reality, much research has been done using computer-based automatic methods to study 3D facial characteristics. This study focuses on face abnormality, especially, children with cleft lip and/or palate. Cleft lip is a birth defect that results in deformity of the upper lip and nose. Its severity is widely variable and the results of treatment are influenced by the initial deformity. Objective assessment of severity would help to guide prognosis and treatment. Given that facial asymmetry increases directly with increasing cleft severity, the main focus of this thesis is the quantification of asymmetry and nasal deformity. In our study, we developed an automated computer-based system for facial analysis that can greatly facilitate medical researchers. Our system takes raw 3D data, automatically crops the region of interest (the face), and normalizes the 3D face mesh. Then 20 landmarks are automatically located using geometric information followed by a deformable registration method. These landmarks are used for locating the mid-facial reference plane, which sets up the reference to compare the left and right side of the face. The plane is used to provide a ranking order based on the severity of cleft lip using a learning-to-rank algorithm. Last but not least, asymmetry and nasal deformity descriptors are calculated to provide quantitative scores. The main contributions of this work are: an automated methodology for cleaning raw data and pose normalization; an automated landmark location method; a machine learning technique that detect landmark-related regions; two original algorithms to find the mid-facial reference planes and their evaluation; features for ranking the severity of cleft lip; and six descriptors for asymmetry and nasal deformity, which are highly correlated to the ranking orders provided by medical expert.

The state-of-the-art in ageing modeling has not addressed the role of biological maturation from infancy to young adulthood where the anthropometrical displacements are occurring. In addition, the three dimensional (3D) face representation is considered in this thesis. The depth and pose variation provides additional information to represent faces accurately.Contrary to numerous studies that focused on 2D facial ageing and predicting the face appearance in the future, this thesis proposes the mathematical de-ageing and ageing models using 3D facial textured meshes of human faces considering the natural trajectory of ageing development during childhood, adulthood and senility.For the purpose of model construction, the face templates are reconstructed in 3D for the age groups from 3 to 75 years old for both genders.To validate the results, three metrics are defined to assess the faces from textural, geometrical and landmark distortion aspects. The metrics were applied on the collected database Face Time-Machine (FaceTim V.2.0) which contains the ground truth 3D faces. The results of the performance evaluation metric on the de-ageing model known as 3D B-FAM show the similarity rate of 75% which means the model does not represent significant disparity.Having considered that facial ageing phenomenon rely on various intrinsic and extrinsic circumstances, we propose a dynamic shape model as a fusion of de-ageing ageing models. This model takes into account the facial shape variations due to lifestyle and nutritious diet. The rendering results indicate that they are perceptually satisfying. Besides, the evaluation results show that the proposed models are remarkably accurate to predict the correct face appearance of an individual in the target age and shape.Furthermore, we address facial asymmetry for methamphetamine addicts using a collected drug-addicted face database. The facial asymmetry is assessed by employing the structural similarity index for textural aspect; and bilateral features for morphological quantification. Statistical analysis indicates a significant increment of facial asymmetry for methamphetamine addicts while ageing. The statistical analysis shows that for drug-addicts, the asymmetry measurement in faces before using drugs is 2% in geometry aspect and it reaches to more than 5%. This increment is seen in textural aspect where the similarity index is 28% and points to 39% for drug addicts.

Likewise, a computational treatment of symmetry and group theory (the ultimate mathematical formalization of symmetry) has the potential to play an important role in computational sciences. Though the term Computational Symmetry was formally defined a decade ago by the first author, referring to algorithmic treatment of symmetries, seeking symmetry from digital data has been attempted for over four decades. Computational symmetry on real world data turns out to be challenging enough that, after decades of effort, a fully automated symmetry-savvy system remains elusive for real world applications. The recent resurging interests in computational symmetry for computer vision and computer graphics applications have shown promising results. Recognizing the fundamental relevance and potential power that computational symmetry affords, we offer this survey to the computer vision and computer graphics communities. This survey provides a succinct summary of the relevant mathematical theory, a historic perspective of some important symmetry-related ideas, a partial yet timely report on the state of the arts symmetry detection algorithms along with its first quantitative benchmark, a diverse set of real world applications, suggestions for future directions and a comprehensive reference list.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Human facial asymmetry has long been a critical factor for evaluations of attractiveness and facial expressions in psychology and anthropology. However, it has rarely been used in human identification tasks. We investigate the effect of quantified statistical facial asymmetry as a biometric under expression variations. Our findings show that the asymmetry measure of automatically selected facial regions captures individual differences that are relatively stable to facial expression variations. More importantly, the synergy of combining Asymmetry faces with conventional Fisherface method using data from a publicly available face databases (Cohn-Kanade and FERET) is quantitatively evaluated. The improvements on classification accuracy are shown to be statistically significant. Five different experiments are setup for Fisherfaces on 55 subjects from Cohn-Kanade database: (1) train on anger and disgust test on joy, (2) train on joy and anger test on disgust, (3) train on disgust and joy test on anger, (4) train on neutral faces and test on peak expressions, and (5) train on peak expressions test on neutral faces. By the addition of facial asymmetry information and an automatic image feature subset selection procedure, the classification error rates of (1) is reduced 45%, and of (2)-(5) are reduced to zero."

Book excerpt: The human face displays mild asymmetry, with measurements of facial structure differing from left to right of the meridian by an average of three percent. Presently this source of variation is of theoretical interest primarily to researchers studying the perception of beauty, but a very limited amount of research has addressed the question of how this variation contributes to the cognitive processes underlying face recognition. This is surprising given that measurement of facial asymmetry can reliably distinguish between even the most similar of faces. Furthermore, brain regions responsible for symmetry detection support face-processing regions, and detection of symmetry is superior in upright faces relative to inverted and contrast-reversed face stimuli. In addition, facial asymmetry provides a useful biometric for automatic face recognition systems, and understanding the contribution of facial asymmetry in human face recognition may therefore inform the development of these systems. In this thesis the extent to which facial asymmetry is implicated in the process of recognition in human participants is quantified. By measuring the effect of left-right reversal on various tasks of face processing, the degree to which facial asymmetry is represented by memory is investigated. Marginal sensitivity to mirror reversal is demonstrated in a number of instances, and it is therefore concluded that cognitive representations of faces specify structural asymmetry. Reversal effects are typically slight however and on a number of occasions no reliable effect of this stimulus manipulation is detected. It is likely that a general tendency to treat mirror reversals as equivalent stimuli, in addition to an inability to recall lateral orientation of objects from memory, somewhat obscure the effect of reversal. The findings are discussed in the context of existing literature examining the way in which faces are cognitively represented.
