Book Teachers Perception of Computer Use and Technical Support in a Rural Virginia School Division

Download or read book Teachers Perception of Computer Use and Technical Support in a Rural Virginia School Division written by Rodney Lamont Berry and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher perceptions of computer-based technology and technology support provided by a rural school division; the extent of teachers' self reported computer skills, comfort levels, perception of obstacles; and the amount of support, time, and training available to them to accomplish the integration during the course of instruction. This research was conducted during the 2010-2011 school term as a case study of a small rural K-12 school division in southern Virginia, consisting of teachers from each core curriculum from each of the three schools, selected deliberately. The study was divided into three phases: an analysis of the school survey; focus group discussion with teachers; and qualitative data generated from focus group interviews. A major finding was that the teachers contend that classroom practices can be changed if teachers are given time to plan how to integrate technology in instruction, thus better preparing students for the 21st century. To accomplish this change, school leaders need to promote opportunities and remove obstacles that impede effective technology integration, and that additional time, access, and training should be established. Because teacher perceptions impact the success of technology integration and support, it is imperative to provide sufficient time for training on how to utilize available equipment in the classroom. This study also reinforced the importance of understanding teacher perceptions which are as important a resource as the hardware and software in computer-based technology in order to promote the successful integration of computer technology in classrooms.

Book excerpt: This thesis is designed to provide a qualitative description of university instructors' experiences, attitudes and perceptions of online learning in an effort to better design online courses that meet the needs of both teaching instructors and learning students. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of instructors regarding the advantages and challenges they face in online delivery of coursework compared to their experiences in the face-to-face delivery. The participants in the study are eight instructors, not necessarily at professorial rank, who work for a public Canadian university and teach students using in both face-to-face and online courses. An inductive, qualitative methodology was used in this study. In depth interviews with the eight participating instructors were conducted, transcribed, and analyzed for themes in which the instructors related to online teaching and learning. Suggestions for improving distance education courses based on the participating instructors' perceptions of their own teaching experiences are offered.

Covering key topics such as gender equity, school administration, and education systems, this premier reference source is ideal for administrators, policymakers, researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, instructors, and students.

Book A Study of the Application of Emerging Technology Teacher and Student Perceptions of the Impact of One to one Laptop Computer Access

Download or read book A Study of the Application of Emerging Technology Teacher and Student Perceptions of the Impact of One to one Laptop Computer Access written by Rae Niles and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe and identify Sedgwick High School0́9s teacher and student perceptions of the impact of one-to-one laptop computer access using an appreciative inquiry theoretical research perspective and the theoretical frameworks of change and paradigm shift. An appreciative inquiry theoretical research perspective was used to structure a qualitative, embedded descriptive case study design. An embedded case study design was used to describe the perceptions of high school teachers and their students who were involved in a one-to-one laptop computer wireless environment on student learning and how teachers teach. Data were collected through teacher and student focus groups, as well as administration of the Left-Hand Right-Hand Column Case Method. Data were analyzed using the comparative analysis matrix method (Miles & Huberman, 1994). The analyzed data revealed six salient findings: (1) Students functioned in the capacity of teacher, (2) technology changed the way teachers and students communicated, (3) the culture of the classroom dynamics between teacher and student changed, (4) technology made learning enjoyable for students, (5) teachers and students believed immersion in a technology-rich learning environment created advantages for student success after high school graduation, and (6) teachers believed that access to ubiquitous technology created new challenges for maintaining student engagement in the learning process. Five of the six findings suggested that technology had changed teaching and learning, and helped to create a paradigm shift in the teacher and student roles. Additionally, those findings also identified the positive core of Sedgwick High School, serving to describe the life giving forces within the organization. One of the six findings revealed challenges associated with the application of emerging technology in the classroom. The findings from this study have the potential to contribute to areas of study that focus on the use of technology in schools. Moreover, research from this study has the potential to help serve as a foundation for other school leaders who are seeking opportunities that prepare students for life in the technology-rich 21st Century through one-to-one laptop computer access.

Book Advancing Research on Teachers Professional Vision Implementing novel Technologies Methods and Theories

Download or read book Advancing Research on Teachers Professional Vision Implementing novel Technologies Methods and Theories written by Christian Kosel and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classroom full of students can be overwhelming for teachers. It is critical that teachers are able to filter and meaningfully interpret the relevant information in this complex scenario. Much of this filtering and interpretation occurs through selective visual perception. Over the last decade, a rapidly growing number of studies in empirical educational research used eye tracking to investigate teachers' selective visual perceptual processes in the classroom. Theoretically, visual attention and perception are often conceptualized as knowledge-based noticing coupled with knowledge-based reasoning about what is visually perceived. Recent eye-tracking studies have shown that experienced teachers, in particular, show improved selective attention of classroom events through faster detection of relevant information and improved monitoring of learning-relevant situations. Researchers agree that a critical driver of selective attention processes is the professional knowledge (declarative, procedural, and metacognitive) of (experienced) teachers, which controls selective perceptual processes in a top-down process. The findings are significant and provide important insights for research on teacher professionalization.

Book Analyses of Teachers Perceptions and Attitudes of a Teacher Laptop Initiative

Download or read book Analyses of Teachers Perceptions and Attitudes of a Teacher Laptop Initiative written by Catherine Gurley Raulston and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzed the attitudes and perceptions of teachers following the implementation of a teacher laptop initiative. The attitudes and perceptions were documented through a mixed-methods research design that collected both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were gathered using pretest and posttest surveys. Qualitative data were gathered through focus group interviews and were used to further inform the quantitative data. The quantitative data suggested that a teacher laptop initiative can affect attitudes and perceptions of teachers. Participants in this study increased their overall perception of their computer use and began to adopt technology in the classroom by using it more often. Results suggested that teachers became more comfortable with computers when given a laptop. The quantitative data did not show significance between a teacher laptop initiative and teacher interest toward computers and teacher view of computer significance. This research also suggested that a teacher laptop initiative, coupled with professional development, can better prepare students for the 21st century. An implication of this study was if teachers are given resources and proper training on how to implement technology in the classroom, attitudes and classroom practices can be changed. Participants believed if educators begin to integrate technology in the classroom and model skills for students, technology could help prepare students for the 21st century.

Book Administrators and Teachers Perceptions of Implementation of Instructional Technology in Secondary One to one Laptop Computing Environments

Download or read book Administrators and Teachers Perceptions of Implementation of Instructional Technology in Secondary One to one Laptop Computing Environments written by Stephanie Leister and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century has been characterized by dramatic increases in personal and societal reliance on rapidly evolving and newly emerging technology. Reflecting the prevalent use of learning technologies, several school districts are adopting one of the fastest growing trends in education today, one-to-one computing initiatives, to enhance their learning environments (Bebell & Kay, 2010; Prososki, 2015). Educators in one-to-one computing environments, especially administrators and teachers, are experiencing the effects of the increased use of technology both in and out of the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative research study is to understand administrator and teacher perceptions about the process of implementing new technology in one-to-one laptop computing environments. Michael Fullan’s (2007) theory of educational change provided the theoretical framework for this study, proposing three overlapping phases of change: initiation, implementation, and institutionalization. The participants of this study represented two southeastern Pennsylvania school districts, which participated in one-to-one laptop computing environments for at least three years. Data were gathered from responses of 10 teachers and five administrators. Perceptions of administrators and teachers in school districts implementing technology in one-to-one laptop computing environments were gathered during the primary phase of data collection. These data were transcribed and analyzed for key words and phrases, in addition to common themes. A theoretical model was derived from this study, identifying six conditions for successful technology implementation. This study concludes with recommendations for further research into technology implementation and one-to-one laptop computing environments.
