Book excerpt: In mainstream U.S. culture, a woman's physical appearance can grant social acceptance and power as well as be critically evaluated throughout her life based on how she measures up to the ideal beauty image. The ideal female beauty image in the U.S. is depicted as White, thin, young, and heterosexual. The impact of the incessant attention given to this image has been widely researched. Yet minimal research has been done on body image development within minority populations. The researcher did not find any studies on the lived experiences of Mexican American women and body image development. This investigation contributes additional understanding for the distinct factors involved in the development of Mexican American women's body image, thereby assisting mental health professionals to enhance their treatment and prevention methods in ways that are more multiculturally competent. This research provides a contextual understanding of Mexican American women's body image development. A phenomenological approach was used to analyze the interviews with 11 Mexican American women and to identify common themes among experiences that were relevant to body image development. The themes that emerged were Familial Influences, The Role of Food, Religious Influences, Media Awareness, and Investment.

Through the processes of anthropomorphism and humanization, people attribute human characteristics, including personalities, free will, and agency to pets, cars, gods, nature, and the like. Similarly, there are some people who often see human agents as less than human, or more object-like. In this manner, objectification describes the treatment of a human being as a thing, disregarding the person's personality and/or sentience. For example, women, medical patients, racial minorities, and people with disabilities, are often seen as animal-like or less than human through dehumanization and objectification. These two opposing forces may be a considered a continuum with anthropomorphism and humanization on one end and dehumanization and objectification on the other end. Although researchers have identified some of the antecedents and consequences of these processes, a systematic investigation of the motivations that underlie this continuum is lacking. Considerations of this continuum may have considerable implications for such areas as everyday human functioning, interactions with people, animals, and objects, violence, discrimination, relationship development, mental health, or psychopathology. The edited volume will integrate multiple theoretical and empirical approaches on this issue.

Book excerpt: Clinical research that examines the lived experiences of first-generation Mexican American women growing up in America, is a topic that is minimally discussed. As a professional Latina woman working in the field of clinical psychology, I became increasingly aware of this unspoken phenomenon through my interactions with other Latinas in a professional, academic, and clinical capacity. This inspired me to conduct an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study to explore the lived experience of first generation Mexican American women living in America, and outside of the traditional Latino cultural norm and gender role of marianismo. This qualitative study sought to bring healing, cultural, and clinical awareness to the emotional challenges that many first-generation Latinas face when attempting to navigate and balance life between two cultures. Participants included five first-generation self identified Latina women between the ages of 24 and 33 with college degrees and who are of Mexican descent. Data collection was conducted via semi-structured interviews. The findings of this study include superordinate themes identified throughout the analysis. This study amplified the struggles that first-generation Mexican American women are faced with living outside the cultural norm while adjusting to life between two cultures. The data collected serves as a valuable tool for understanding and providing clinical treatment to Latina women.

News stories and reports of survey research often claim that as many as three girls in five are on a diet at any given time, and they grimly suggest that many are “at risk” for eating disorders. But how much can we believe these frightening stories? What do teenagers mean when they say they are dieting? Anthropologist Mimi Nichter spent three years interviewing middle school and high school girls—lower-middle to middle class, white, black, and Latina—about their feelings concerning appearance, their eating habits, and dieting. In Fat Talk, she tells us what the girls told her, and explores the influence of peers, family, and the media on girls’ sense of self. Letting girls speak for themselves, she gives us the human side of survey statistics. Most of the white girls in her study disliked something about their bodies and knew all too well that they did not look like the envied, hated “perfect girl.” But they did not diet so much as talk about dieting. Nichter wryly argues—in fact some of the girls as much as tell her—that “fat talk” is a kind of social ritual among friends, a way of being, or creating solidarity. It allows the girls to show that they are concerned about their weight, but it lessens the urgency to do anything about it, other than diet from breakfast to lunch. Nichter concludes that if anything, girls are watching their weight and what they eat, as well as trying to get some exercise and eat “healthfully” in a way that sounds much less disturbing than stories about the epidemic of eating disorders among American girls. Black girls, Nichter learned, escape the weight obsession and the “fat talk” that is so pervasive among white girls. The African-American girls she talked with were much more satisfied with their bodies than were the white girls. For them, beauty was a matter of projecting attitude (“’tude”) and moving with confidence and style. Fat Talk takes the reader into the lives of girls as daughters, providing insights into how parents talk to their teenagers about their changing bodies. The black girls admired their mothers’ strength; the white girls described their mothers’ own “fat talk,” their fathers’ uncomfortable teasing, and the way they and their mothers sometimes dieted together to escape the family “curse”—flabby thighs, ample hips. Moving beyond negative stereotypes of mother–daughter relationships, Nichter sensitively examines the issues and struggles that mothers face in bringing up their daughters, particularly in relation to body image, and considers how they can help their daughters move beyond rigid and stereotyped images of ideal beauty.
