The study deals with study code-switching from the psycholinguistics perspective. The definitions of the concept, its factors and models are included. Code-switching cannot be regarded as a universal phenomenon, since it is only widespread in some language communities. It is considered as psychological phenomenon whose causes are obviously extralinguistics, in other words code-switching does not occur only as a result of language use but by mental processes taking place in bilingual’s place.

But they share the common goal of seeking to explain how social structures, ideologies, and identity impact on the grammatical and conversational features of code-switching and language mixing, and on the emergence of mixed languages. It is also of relevance to the general debate on the inter-relationships between language and society.

In this paper, however, it will be examined from a psycholinguistic approach. As code-switching occurs rather naturally and in informal settings, psycholinguists – who usually seem to prefer working with controlled data – tend to refrain from studying the psycholinguistic aspects of this phenomenon. Thus, unfortunately, much experimental data does not seem to exist in this research field so far. Nonetheless, the study of code-switching with naturally occurring data could certainly provide some interesting insights into the cognitive processes of bilinguals when switching languages, and has thus been increasingly analyzed and evaluated with corpus data in recent years, for example, by Broersma & De Bot, 2006; Broersma, 2009, whose findings will be summarized and discussed in this paper. The aim here is to present support for language switches induced by so-called “trigger words”, and to analyze how and to what extent certain words can trigger code-switching.

The longitudinal studies started at approximately age one year and six months and continued till age six. The papers focus on the development of specific grammatical phenomena; explanations are given within the framework of the Principle and Parameter approach. The study is primarily concerned with the acquisition of so-called 'functional categories' and the consequences of their acquisition for the development of grammar. Specific points dealt with in these papers include: gender, number and case and their internal structure (DP vs NP); inflection and its consequences for agreement marking; and word order phenomena (subject-raising constructions (incl. passives), word order in subordinate clauses). The basic hypothesis underlying this study is that early child grammars consist only of lexical categories and that functional categories are implemented later in the child's grammar. How this happens exactly is the central issue explored in this book.

It intends to fill a gap in the literature by proposing an interdisciplinary perspective, as most studies are concentrated on bilingual CS and are grounded just in one approach (mostly sociolinguistic or psycholinguistic); it also presents a new mixed key for CS data analysis, going beyond the traditional neat dichotomies defining CS as «acceptable or grammatical vs unacceptable or ungrammatical». A brand-new model, the Integrated Model of Plurilingual Code-Switching (IMPCS), which recommends the use of five-graded scales in informants' judgments, is proposed. It includes socio-psycholinguistics (social status and prestige of the languages in contact, official status of minority language, symmetrical/bi- or pluridirectional or asymmetrical/unidirectional kind of contact, language mode, claimed CS practice, explicit attitudes and acceptability judgements) and lexicalist variables.
