Book A Proposed International Alphabet

Download or read book A Proposed International Alphabet written by John Antonakos and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past hundred years, some fifty international languages have been devised. But what was first needed was an international alphabet. Such an alphabet is needed for a number of reasons. First, it is needed for international communication. An international traveler knowing this alphabet would be able to instantly determine his location by reading signs written with the alphabet. Second, it would make language learning easier since language books would be written with this alphabet. And third, it would make reading and spelling easier for everyone. The proposed alphabet must meet the following conditions: (1) it must be phonetic, (2) it must have a reasonable number of symbols, (3) it must have simple symbols, and (4) it must be acceptable to as many of the world’s people as possible. The thirty-letter international alphabet presented here meets these criteria.

Book Fluent Forever

Download or read book Fluent Forever written by Gabriel Wyner and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

Book A New Perspective for the Use of Dialect in African American Spirituals

Download or read book A New Perspective for the Use of Dialect in African American Spirituals written by Felicia Raphael Marie Barber and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Perspective for the Use of Dialect in African American Spirituals: History, Context, and Linguistics investigates the use of the African American English (AAE) dialect in the musical genre of the spiritual. Perfect for conductors and performers alike, this book traces the history of the dialect, its use in early performance practice, and the sociolinguistic impact of the AAE dialect in the United States. Felicia Barber explores AAE’s development during the African Diaspora and its correlations with Southern States White English (SSWE) and examines the dialect’s perception and how its weaponization has impacted the performance of the genre itself. She provides a synopsis of research on the use of dialect in spirituals from the past century through the analysis of written scores, recordings, and research. She identifies common elements of early performance practice and provides the phonological and grammatical features identified in early practice. This book contains practical guide for application of her findings on ten popular spiritual texts using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). It concludes with insights by leading arrangers on their use of AAE dialect as a part of the genre and practice.
