Book excerpt: Religious leaders require tremendous skill in emotional intelligence, yet their training very rarely addresses how to develop the practical skills needed—from self-awareness to resilience. Emotional Intelligence Religious Leaders draws on the latest research in business, psychology, and theology to offer religious leaders the information and tools they need to increase their emotional intelligence and enhance their relationships, communication and conflict management skills, spirituality, and overall well-being. The book offers both a deep understanding of how to develop emotional intelligence and also prescriptive insights about how to practice it that will be helpful for religious leaders in many settings, including congregational ministry, lay ministry, spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1906 by Rev. Horace Talbert, some fifty years after slavery ended, AME church history comes to life through profiles of 122 men-faithful devotees, or spiritual "sons" of Bishop Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Founded in 1816, the AME church was the first organized African American denomination in the United States. These sterling portraits of the "sons of Allen," mostly AME pastors, but also leading black men from other areas of industry, awaken the dreamer within... In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the AME church, the descendants of the author have reissued this remarkable book, which includes a "Sketch" by Rev. Talbert about his beloved alma mater Wilberforce University. This edition also has new material from Talbert's family members: a preface from Mrs. Suesetta Talbert McCree, a granddaughter of Rev. Talbert, believed to be the last surviving member of her generation; and a foreword by Rev. Malcolm Hassan Stephens, an Itinerant Elder of the AME Church and a great-great grandson of Rev. Talbert. The Sons of Allen is excellent primary source material for those interested in AME Church history, African American history, American history and genealogy. All readers will be inspired by the lives these men set forth to live, encouraged by the AME motto: "God our Father, Christ our redeemer, the Holy Spirit our comforter, Humankind our family."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War changed the United States in many ways—economic, political, and social. Of these changes, none was more important than Emancipation. Besides freeing nearly four million slaves, it brought agricultural wage labor to a reluctant South and gave a vote to black adult males in the former slave states. It also offered former slaves new opportunities in education, property ownership—and military service. From late 1862 to the spring of 1865, as the Civil War raged on, the federal government accepted more than 180,000 black men as soldiers, something it had never done before on such a scale. Known collectively as the United States Colored Troops and organized in segregated regiments led by white officers, some of these soldiers guarded army posts along major rivers; others fought Confederate raiders to protect Union supply trains, and still others took part in major operations like the Siege of Petersburg and the Battle of Nashville. After the war, many of the black regiments took up posts in the former Confederacy to enforce federal Reconstruction policy. Freedom by the Sword tells the story of these soldiers' recruitment, organization, and service. Thanks to its broad focus on every theater of the war and its concentration on what black soldiers actually contributed to Union victory, this volume stands alone among histories of the U.S. Colored Troops.

Book excerpt: A brilliant work from the most influential philosopher since Sartre. In this indispensable work, a brilliant thinker suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul.
