Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primer on Learning and Conditioning: A Quantitative Approach is a succinct, practical, and exercise-based learning and conditioning textbook designed to help students easily grasp key concepts in the field. The book emphasizes a conceptual perspective on associative learning and conditioning, and features a distinct focus on experimental design and quantitative analysis. The book begins with a brief history of the field and introduces students to the concept of learning. Later chapters provide students with the tools and information they need to successfully design conditioning experiments and represent functional relations. Concepts such as modal action patterns, generalization gradients, habituation, and sensitization are explored. The text discusses Pavlovian and operant conditioning, elaborating on foundational concepts such as contingency, reinforcement and punishment, and simple schedules of reinforcement. Students also explore the topics of self-control, behavioral economics, and their implications on mechanisms of reinforcement. Featuring exercises designed to strengthen key ideas at the end of each chapter, Primer on Learning and Conditioning is an interactive text that helps students bridge the gap between the foundational concepts of learning and conditioning and empirical research. It is well-suited for courses in experimental psychology or neuroscience that are focused on learning, conditioning, motivation, or behavior. Federico Sanabria holds his M.A. and Ph.D. from Stony Brook University. He is an associate professor of behavioral neuroscience in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University. Download or read book Operant Conditioning written by Derek E. Blackman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approach to psychology advocated by the radical behaviourists was often misunderstood and frequently gave rise to controversy. Originally published in 1974, this book introduced current research in operant conditioning and explains the attempt to understand behaviour inherent in such experiments at the time. After considering the philosophical context in which behaviouristic psychology developed, the author outlines the basic characteristics of operant research by reviewing single experiments on the effects of reinforcement on behaviour. Chapters on schedules of intermittent reinforcement extend this approach to more complex situations and emphasize that behaviour can be maintained and controlled in many different ways by environmental events. The author then discusses recent work on conditional reinforcement and on the discriminative control of behaviour and shows how operant research has changed our understanding of these important concepts in psychology. Subsequent chapters review research within the operant paradigm on the effects on behaviour of punishment, anxiety, aversive stimuli and drugs, again by emphasising the special contribution to these topics made by operant conditioning techniques and methodology. The final chapters consider the general implications of operant research for educational practice and for clinical psychology, and place this approach within the context of psychology as a whole. Dr Blackman argues that it should be recognized as one important attempt to further the scientific analysis of behaviour. This book, filled a long recognized need for an undergraduate text in this area at the time, and helped students form their own evaluation. Now it should be read in its historical context.

Book Behavior Analysis and Learning

Download or read book Behavior Analysis and Learning written by W. David Pierce and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavior Analysis and Learning, Fifth Edition is an essential textbook covering the basic principles in the field of behavior analysis and learned behaviors, as pioneered by B. F. Skinner. The textbook provides an advanced introduction to operant conditioning from a very consistent Skinnerian perspective. It covers a range of principles from basic respondent and operant conditioning through applied behavior analysis into cultural design. Elaborating on Darwinian components and biological connections with behavior, the book treats the topic from a consistent worldview of selectionism. The functional relations between the organism and the environment are described, and their application in accounting for old behavior and generating new behavior is illustrated. Expanding on concepts of past editions, the fifth edition provides updated coverage of recent literature and the latest findings. There is increased inclusion of biological and neuroscience material, as well as more data correlating behavior with neurological and genetic factors. The chapter on verbal behavior is expanded to include new research on stimulus equivalence and naming; there is also a more detailed and updated analysis of learning by imitation and its possible links to mirror neurons. In the chapter on applied behavior analysis (ABA), new emphasis is given to contingency management of addiction, applications to education, ABA and autism, and prevention and treatment of health-related problems. The material presented in this book provides the reader with the best available foundation in behavior science and is a valuable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in psychology or other behavior-based disciplines. In addition, a website of supplemental resources for instructors and students makes this new edition even more accessible and student-friendly (www.psypress.com/u/pierce).

Book Handbook of Learning and Cognitive Processes Volume 2

Download or read book Handbook of Learning and Cognitive Processes Volume 2 written by William Estes and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, Volume 2 of this Handbook looks at areas traditionally associated with learning theory such as conditioning, discrimination and behavior theory. It deals with concepts and theories growing principally out of laboratory studies of conditioning and learning. The intention was to treat mechanisms, processes, and principles of some generality – applicable at least to all vertebrates. It was becoming well understood that detailed interpretations of particular behaviors required the authors to take account of the way general principles operate in the context of species-specific behavioral organizations and developmental histories; but detailed consideration of just how these interpretations were accomplished for different animal forms was another enterprise. Here the authors limit their task to abstracting from the enormous literature facts and ideas which seemed general enough to be of interest and perhaps utility to investigators in other disciplines at the time. Volume 1 presented an overview of the field and introduced the principal theoretical and methodological issues that persistently recurred in the expanded treatments of specific research areas that comprise the later volumes. Volume 3 looks at human learning and motivation, while the last 3 volumes range over the many active lines of research identified with human cognitive processes at the time.

Book Basic Processes of Learning Cognition and Motivation

Download or read book Basic Processes of Learning Cognition and Motivation written by S. M. Cormier and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986. The main objective of this book is to provide a hard-headed theoretical integration of several different major areas of research on learning, cognition, and motivation in humans and other mammals. By hard-headed, the author simply means that the concepts were generated from empirical data and are testable. Since an integrative theory must of necessity integrate apparent diversity, such an approach involves the identification and description of the most fundamental factors (structural processes) underlying the observed capacities of humans and animals in the domain of learning and motivation.

Book Augmentation of Brain Function Facts Fiction and Controversy

Download or read book Augmentation of Brain Function Facts Fiction and Controversy written by Mikhail Lebedev and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume I, entitled “Augmentation of Brain Functions: Brain-Machine Interfaces”, is a collection of articles on neuroprosthetic technologies that utilize brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). BMIs strive to augment the brain by linking neural activity, recorded invasively or noninvasively, to external devices, such as arm prostheses, exoskeletons that enable bipedal walking, means of communication and technologies that augment attention. In addition to many practical applications, BMIs provide useful research tools for basic science. Several articles cover challenges and controversies in this rapidly developing field, such as ways to improve information transfer rate. BMIs can be applied to the awake state of the brain and to the sleep state, as well. BMIs can augment action planning and decision making. Importantly, BMI operations evoke brain plasticity, which can have long-lasting effects. Advanced neural decoding algorithms that utilize optimal feedback controllers are key to the BMI performance. BMI approach can be combined with the other augmentation methods; such systems are called hybrid BMIs. Overall, it appears that BMI will lead to many powerful and practical brain-augmenting technologies in the future.
