Book A Preliminary Survey of the Freshwater Mussels of the Bayfield River Watershed and Nearby Lake Huron Tributaries

Download or read book A Preliminary Survey of the Freshwater Mussels of the Bayfield River Watershed and Nearby Lake Huron Tributaries written by Todd James Morris and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Surveys of the freshwater mussels (Unionidae) of the Bayfield River watershed and smaller nearby Lake Huron tributaries in southwestern Ontario were undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Eighteen sites were sampled along the Bayfield River, from both the main channel and its tributaries. A total of 1385 animals were found, representing 16 species. The dominant species in the Bayfield River watershed was Pyganodon grandis, which occurred at over half of the sites surveyed, and represented 44% of all mussels found."--Document.

Book A Preliminary Survey of the Freshwater Mussels of the Saugeen River Watershed

Download or read book A Preliminary Survey of the Freshwater Mussels of the Saugeen River Watershed written by T. J. Morris and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the freshwater mussels (Unionidae) of the Saugeen River watershed of southwestern Ontario was undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff in September 2006. Eight sites were sampled across the watershed including sites in all 5 sub-basins and the main channel. In total, 1064, mussels were collected during this survey representing 8 species. When combined with results from limited historic and opportunistic sampling in the watershed these results bring the total number of species recorded for the watershed to 11. The dominant species in the Saugeen River was Elliptio dilatata occurring at 85% of sites and representing 67% of all mussels encountered. Only one mussel Species at Risk, Villosa iris, was detected during the survey. Although widespread (occurring at 71% of sites) this species was numerically rare representing less than 5% of all mussels.

Book A Preliminary Survey of the Freshwater Mussels of the Welland River Watershed in 2008

Download or read book A Preliminary Survey of the Freshwater Mussels of the Welland River Watershed in 2008 written by Todd James Morris and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the freshwater mussels (Unionidae) of the Welland River was undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff in August 2008. Eight sites were sampled throughout the watershed, with six from the main channel and two from tributaries (Oswego Creek and Lyons Creek). A total of 50 live animals were found, representing nine different species. This survey represents the most comprehensive and current survey of unionid fauna in the Welland River and as such lays the foundation for future studies in this watershed and in the Niagara Region.--Document.

Book An Analysis of Freshwater Mussels Unionidae in the Quiver River and Bogue Phalia Mississippi 1994 95

Download or read book An Analysis of Freshwater Mussels Unionidae in the Quiver River and Bogue Phalia Mississippi 1994 95 written by Andrew C. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey to assess community characteristics, density, population demography of dominant species, and the presence of rare or endangered species of mussels (Family: Unionidae) was conducted in selected reaches of the Quiver River and Bogue Phalia, Mississippi, in 1994 and 1995 for the U.S. Army Engineer District, Vicksburg. Results are being used to assess the economic value of mussels in the project area and to determine the environmental effects of proposed maintenance dredging. The project area included a section of the Quiver River between its confluence with the Big Sunflower River immediately north of Highway 82 in Sunflower County to the Leflore-Tallahatchie county line. In the Bogue Phalia, the study area consisted of a reach between Highway 82 and Rosedale, west-central Bolivar County. Twenty-two species of native freshwater mussels were collected in the Quiver River; 26 sites were sampled using qualitative methods, and a total of 2,238 mussels were collected. The dominant mussel was Amblema p. plicata, which comprised over 67 percent of the mussel fauna. Plectomerus dombeyanus comprised 20 percent of the mussels. Overall species diversity (0.67 to 0.90) was low, mainly because of the dominance of A. p. plicata. Evidence of recent recruitment was low; approximately 7 percent of the species and 0.15 percent of the individuals collected were less than 30 mm total shell length. Overall mean density ranged from less than 8.6 individuals/square meter at River Mile (RM) 6.4 to 92.3 individuals/square meter at RM 19.7.
