We extracted the polarized structure functions g1 and g2 of the proton and deuteron. Both experiments made precision measurements through a wide range in x and Q2. These data fall into the kinematic range between existing world data and have good consistency with them. In combination with the other world data, the results for g1 allow increased constraint on NLO QCD fits to the polarized structure functions. For g2 no significant world data existed before E155X. The E155X measurement provides information about the higher twist effects in the nucleon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spin structure function g2(x, Q2) and the virtual photon asymmetry A2(x, Q2) were measured for the proton using deep inelastic scattering. The experiment was conducted at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), where longitudinally polarized electrons at 29.1 and 32.3 GeV were scattered from a transversely polarized NH3 target. Large data sets were accumulated using three independent spectrometers covering a kinematic range 0.02 (less-than or equal to) x (less-than or equal to) 0.8 and 1 (less-than or equal to) Q2 (less-than or equal to) 20 (GeV/c)2. This new data is the first data precise enough to distinguish between current models for the proton. The structure function g2{sup p} was found to be reasonably consistent with the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. The Q2 dependence of g2 approximately follows the Q2 dependence of g2{sup WW}, although the data are not precise enough to rule out no Q2 dependence. The absolute value for A2{sup p} was found to be significantly smaller than the Soffer limit over the measured range. The virtual photon asymmetry A2 was also found to be inconsistent with zero over much of the measured range.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes a precision measurement of the neutron spin dependent structure function, g{sub 1}{sup n}(x). The measurement was made by the E154 collaboration at SLAC using a longitudinally polarized, 48.3 GeV electron beam, and a {sup 3}He target polarized by spin exchange with optically pumped rubidium. A target polarization as high as 50% was achieved. The elements of the experiment which pertain to the polarized {sup 3}He target will be described in detail in this thesis. To achieve a precision measurement, it has been necessary to minimize the systematic error from the uncertainty in the target parameters. All of the parameters of the target have been carefully measured, and the most important parameters of the target have been measured using multiple techniques. The polarization of the target was measured using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, and has been calibrated using both proton NMR and by measuring the shift of the Rb Zeeman resonance frequency due to the {sup 3}He polarization. The fraction of events which originated in the {sup 3}He, as measured by the spectrometers, has been determined using a physical model of the target and the spectrometers. It was also measured during the experiment using a variable pressure {sup 3}He reference cell in place of the polarized {sup 3}He target. The spin dependent structure function g{sub 1}{sup n}(z) was measured in the Bjorken x range of 0.014

Three electromagnetic spectrometers at angles of 2.75{sup o}, 5.5{sup o}, and 10.5{sup o} measured the scattered electrons. This work presents an analysis of the longitudinal structure function of the proton, g1{sup p}(x, Q2). Included is a re-analysis of the proton target polarization data that for the first time corrects a problem encountered which altered those measurements.

The integrals[Lambda][sub p]=[integral][sub 0][sup 1] g[sub 1][sup p] (x, Q[sup 2])dx and[Lambda][sub d]=[integral][sub 0][sup 1] g[sub 1][sup d](x, Q[sup 2])dx were evaluated at fixed Q[sup 2]= 3 (GeV/c)[sup 2] using the 29.1 GeV data to yield[Lambda][sub p]= 0.127[+-] 0.004(stat.)[+-] 0.010(syst.) and[Lambda][sub d]= 0.041[+-] 0.003[+-] 0.004. The Q[sup 2] dependence of the ratio g[sub 1]/F[sub 1] was studied and found to be small for Q[sup 2]> 1 (GeV/c)[sup 2]. Within experimental precision the g[sub 2] data are well-described by the twist-2 contribution, g[sub 2][sup WW]. Twist-3 matrix elements were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions. The asymmetry A[sub 2] was measured and found to be significantly smaller than the positivity limit[radical]R for both proton and deuteron targets. A[sub 2][sup p] is found to be positive and inconsistent with zero.
