Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Diseases of the Eye MY aim in the composition of the following pages has been to place before the profession, in a concise and readable form, a general view of the pmnt state of knowledge with regard to the nature and treat mcnt of the more important diseases of the eye. I have not thought it necessary to dwell minutely upon maladies of rare occurrence, or upon details which are interesting only to specialists; neither have I attempted to achieve that kind of completeness which is produced by undigested compilation. The book embodies the substance of my lectures at St. George's Haspital, and contains but slight reference to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reactions to the German edition of this book have been most contradic tory. While some readers found the book absolutely unnecessary ("Surgery is learned from practice, not from theory"), others were enthusiastic (" Just the sort of book I have always needed "). In my opinion the divergent recep tion of the book is best explained by the comment of my friend, BALDER GLOOR *, who called the book a "grammar of eye surgery". Indeed there are people who can learn a language by practice alone, and there are others who do better by knowing its grammar. In learning by mere practice to be sure, proficiency will be long in coming, because it will be more difficult to recognize, and thus to correct, whatever errors are made, whereas a knowledge of grammar will reveal the basic structures and shorten the learning process. Similarly, surgery can be learned purely from practical experience. Yet the trial-and-error quest for experience is not compatible with the interests of the patient. A knowledge of "surgical grammar", on the other hand, not only shortens the time for learning but also helps us to compare different surgical techniques and to weigh thcir advantages and disadvantages. It is also helpful in developing new surgical methods, for the general rules of course, can always be applied to novel situations where experience, is lacking.

Book Ophthalmic Surgery a Treatise on Surgical Operations Pertaining to the Eye and Its Appendages

Download or read book Ophthalmic Surgery a Treatise on Surgical Operations Pertaining to the Eye and Its Appendages written by Charles H. Beard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Surgery a Treatise on Surgical Operations Pertaining to the Eye and Its Appendages: With Chapters, on Para-Operative Technic and Management of Instruments The selection of the matters discussed in the following pages and the manner of treating them are the results of the careful study and practical application of the involved principles made in hospitals, dispensaries, and in private practice, extending over a period of twenty-six years. They began while the author was a student under Agnew and Knapp, in 1883, were later continued in England and on the Continent of Europe, and have ever since been diligently prosecuted. There has been no separate work on the surgery of the eye published in the United States for nearly half a century, and but little written upon the subject in connection with the more general treatises on ophthalmology, if we except the admirable contribution of Knapp to the System of Norris and Oliver some twelve years ago. The object here has been to supply a work that would embody not only what experience has taught and judgment prompted as being the more valued measures of all countries, but, in particular, those of our own country. The presentation of portions devoted to the history of the different procedures is deemed of great importance, but to keep them from appearing obtrusive they have been made as concise as practicable. The classification followed has seemed the logical one to adopt. The chapter on the extraction of foreign bodies from the interior of the eye has been placed in a class of its own instead of with the operations upon the globe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ophthalmoscopic Surgery: Being a Practical Treatise on the Use of the Ophthalmoscope in Diseases of the Eye The confident opinion I entertained, when the first edition of this work appeared, in 1857, of the value and importance of the Ophthalmoscope as an unerring guide in the previously obscure pathology of the eye, and the great popularity which I also anticipated it would achieve, have been fully realized by the results of the past five years' experience. That its introduction would form a new era in scientific investigation, I felt assured, from the advance of special knowledge when aided by proper methods. Of investigation, and the wide field.
