Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Tabular Summary of French Pronunciation: Applied to the Analysis of All the Sounds Occurring in French Words We claim, in this small work, to have reduced all the sounds that occur in French to ten comprehensive Tables, each of which, by their application to words, will enable the student to overcome several difficulties without memorizing absolute rules. The sounds of French words are not illustrated until the learner has become familiar with the same in their most simple 'forms. Instead, therefore, of giving a series of words after each sound, one general exercise is placed after the Tables all the words of this exercise being analyzed, in reference to the vowel-sounds and consonants. It will be seen that, owing to this method, the student can easily ascertain the pronunci ation of a French word without the help of a teacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory textbook is principally addressed to English speakers who want systematically to improve their pronunciation of French - whether relative beginners or more advanced students. It describes the difficulties typically encountered, explains why they occur. and suggests ways to resolve them. It also explains how certain properties of the French sound system came about as the language changed over time, and it includes an examination of the relationship between French spelling and French pronunciation. Although focusing on the pronunciation of standard French, different pronunciations in other varieties of French (Québec French, Southern French, etc.) are also considered. In addition, from a more theoretical perspective, the book provides readers with a fundamental understanding of the way French sounds are produced and how they behave according to general linguistic principles. Overall the book stands as a multifaceted introduction to French sounds, drawing for its account on contrastive analysis, general phonetics, traditional knowledge and modern developments in phonology, historical linguistics, and orthography. Teachers of French will welcome Bernard Tranel's wide scholarship and firm grasp of teaching principles, while students will welcome the refreshing clarity of style and organization.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Pronunciation: Principles and Practice and a Summary of Usage in Writing and Printing The path of any one undertaking to furnish a guide to French pronunciation is a thorny one. Nevertheless, despite this fact and the thanklessness of the task, the subject receives, in a variety of forms, some attention annually. Most of this attention is of the obligatory kind and is found in the opening chapter of almost every French grammar that appears. Such treatment, While necessarily concise and brief and generally well adapted to the purpose in view, of introducing the student to the subject, hardly ever goes beyond that goal. Besides the grammars, there are quite a few manuals, or treatises, on pronunciation that appear from time to time, and in their way are helpful to the serious student of the subject, no matter how objectionable he may consider many features in such works. Lastly there are the recent dictionaries, in most Of which the most cursory examination reveals an amount of attention given to the subject of pronuncia tion proportionate to the very considerable interest there in manifested of late years.
