Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Download or read book No Other Help I Know written by Shirley Brantley and published by . This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a homespun vernacular all her own, Shirley Brantley narrates this true tale of struggle and triumph. Her debut novel, No Other Help I Know, is set in the early sixties in the rural south. Largely autobiographical, the story begins with Jeane Brockton en route to her hometown of Pendelton, South Carolina. During this sentimental journey, the scenes along the countryside cause intense memories to emerge. Early in the novel, Jeane unfolds the union of her mother, Etta, a Baptist preacher's daughter who loves gospel singing and sings in the choir at St. Stephens Baptist every second Sunday, and her father, Bill, a guitar-picking, blues-singing country boy. Bill wows the crowd at Bobby's Shack when he wins a hambone contest.

Download or read book Senoia written by Carla Cook Smith and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1828, a large group of South Carolina natives migrated to the eastern part of Coweta County, Georgia, following the land lottery of 1827. By 1860, Rev. Francis Warren Baggarly had purchased the Willow Dell settlement and renamed it Senoia. The Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic and the Central of Georgia rail lines provided four passenger trains for the city near the turn of the 20th century and are credited for Senoia's boom in commerce, which created the need for a hotel in 1906. By 1989, Georgia was ranked third behind New York and Los Angeles in movie production. Riverwood Studios was merely a concept when Paul Lombardi learned about the 120 acres for sale in Senoia that he would later purchase for a studio. Thirty-five miles from the Atlanta airport, Senoia has served as an excellent location for filming, and the city has over 25 film productions to its credit, including Fried Green Tomatoes and The Walking Dead.
Download or read book A History of Richland County written by Edwin Luther Green and published by Genealogical Publishing Company. This book was released on 1974 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centerpiece of this work is an exhaustive collection of will abstracts (pp. 207-361), compiled from wills in the Office of the Judge of Probate at Charleston, Camden, and Winnsboro (1747-1783) and from the Office of the Judge or Probate of Richland County (1785-1865). The wills extend beyond the dates specified in the ostensible coverage of the volume itself, which perhaps explains why a second volume was never produced. Information contained in the wills includes the names of the testators; names of heirs and their relation to the testator; bequests of real and personal property; dates of recording and probate; names of executors, witnesses, and appraisers; and exact citations to the original will books and page numbers.
