Book Development of a Portable Neutron Coincidence Counter for Field Measurements of Nuclear Materials Using the Advanced Multiplicity Capabilities of MCNPX 2 5 F and the Neutron Coincidence Point Model

Download or read book Development of a Portable Neutron Coincidence Counter for Field Measurements of Nuclear Materials Using the Advanced Multiplicity Capabilities of MCNPX 2 5 F and the Neutron Coincidence Point Model written by Angela Lynn Thornton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron coincidence counting is an important passive Nondestructive Assay (NDA) technique widely used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of nuclear material in bulk samples. During the fission process, multiple neutrons are simultaneously emitted from the splitting nucleus. These neutron groups are often referred to as coincident neutrons. Because different isotopes possess different coincident neutron characteristics, the coincident neutron signature can be used to identify and quantify a given material. In an effort to identify unknown nuclear samples in field inspections, the Portable Neutron Coincidence Counter (PNCC) has been developed. This detector makes use of the coincident neutrons being emitted from a bulk sample. An in-depth analysis has been performed to establish whether the nuclear material in an unknown sample could be quantified with the accuracy and precision needed for safeguards measurements. The analysis was performed by comparing experimental measurements of PuO2 samples to the calculated output produced using MCNPX and the Neutron Coincidence Point Model. Based on the analysis, it is evident that this new portable system can play a useful role in identifying nuclear material for verification purposes.

Book Heterogeneous Wastes Characterization

Download or read book Heterogeneous Wastes Characterization written by Epa/Envir Syst Monit and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-11-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogenous Wastes Characterization Methods and Recommendations addresses the problems faced by investigators when attempting to characterize heterogenous wastes contaminated with hazardous chemicals and/or radionuclides. The book is the result of a workshop conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to devise methods for cleaning up waste sites, including landfills and drum dumps, where these chemicals have been spilled or improperly stored. The book summarizes study planning tools, sampling design strategies, and field and laboratory methods now in use. It also identifies the advantages and disadvantages of each method. In addition, the book identifies areas that would benefit from methodological research or development or the adoption of new approaches. Pertinent regulatory definitions have been assembled and augmented with practical working definitions. Heterogenous Wastes Characterization Methods and Recommendations is essential for personnel who work with hazardous wastes or in sanitary engineering firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an increase of global security concerns over potential terrorist acts, the threat of WMDs, and increasing political issues with nations seeking nuclear capability, the need to track, detect, and safeguard nuclear material globally has never been greater. Nuclear Safeguards, Security and Nonproliferation is a comprehensive reference that covers cutting-edge technologies used to trace, track, and safeguard nuclear material. It is a contributed volume with sections contributed by scientists from leading institutions such as Los Alamos National Labs, Sandia National Labs, Pacific Northwest Nuclear Labs, and Texas A&M University, and the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The book is divided into 3 sections and includes 30 chapters on such topics as - the security of nuclear facilities and material, the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials, improvised nuclear devices, how to prevent nuclear terrorism. International case studies of security at nuclear facilities and illegal nuclear trade activities provide specific examples of the complex issues surrounding the technology and policy for nuclear material protection, control and accountability. Specific cases include analysis of the timely issues in the nuclear programs of countries such as North Korea, Iran, and Kazakstan among others. Nuclear Security is a must-have volume for the dozens of private and public organizations involved in driving Homeland Security, domestic, and international policy issues relating to nuclear material security, non-proliferation, and nuclear transparency. - Written by some of the world's top scientists including members of the Nuclear Division of Los Alamos National Labs (U.S.) - A timely discussion of current international nuclear security issues includes case studies on Iraq, Iran and North Korea - Book takes a global perspective on nuclear security and non-proliferation detailing the little-known real-world technologies used to secure, detect and track nuclear material
