Book excerpt: The scion of a revered political dynasty, Senator Stephen McEvoy was groomed to lead, but no one expected it so soon-least of all him. After his father's sudden death, he's appointed to fill his seat. Now he must win a tough election against an archconservative. Though Stephen is a ladies' man, he's never let his love life interfere with his career-until he meets Anne Norwood, a new intern. At first, he dismisses her as just another pretty young thing, only more interesting. Stephen tries to steer clear of her, but with each sighting and interaction, an unspoken mutual attraction develops. Anne's independent streak and clever mind intrigue him, and with his guard down, she discovers he's far more interesting than his Senator McEvoy persona. They're both too smart to fall for one another, yet they do. Luckily for Stephen, no political dynasty is successful if left to one man. Stephen's sisters, Patty and Megan, guard the family name, and their mother, Lillian, is both loving parent and shrewd matriarch. When she learns Stephen is willing to risk his seat for Anne, she decides the family will chaperone them in secret. Despite the compromise, the family remains committed to keeping the McEvoy Senate seat at any cost. Stephen's Senate race receives national attention as their feelings deepen and the political dangers increase. His opposition is steered by a conservative Godfather who investigates Stephen's life, looking to pounce on any misstep. As they take greater risks seeing one another, Stephen's past affairs and Republican opposition catch up with him, and they must fight for their future. In the heat of an election, no one is above surveillance, rumors, and threats. Campaigns- like love-are either won or lost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political scandals have become a pervasive feature of many societies today. From Profumo to the cash-for-questions scandal, from Watergate to the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, scandals have come to play a central role in politics and in the shaping of public debate. What are the characteristics of political scandals and why have they come to assume such prominence today? What are the social and political consequences of the preoccupation with political scandal in the public domain? In this major new book Thompson develops a systematic and wide-ranging analysis of the phenomenon of political scandal. He shows that the rise of political scandal is linked to the changes brought about by the development of communication media, which have transformed the nature of visibility and altered the relations between public and private life. He analyses the characteristics of scandals as mediated events and he explains why mediated scandals in the political field have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Distinguishing between three basic types of political scandal, Thompson reconstructs the development of sex scandals, financial scandals and what he calls 'power scandals' in Britain and the United States, showing how scandals unfold and how they form part of distinctive political cultures of scandal. In the final chapter, Thompson develops an original theoretical account of political scandal and its consequences which highlights the connections between scandal, reputation and trust. This book is a path-breaking analysis of a troubling phenomenon which has become a central feature of public life in our societies today. It will be of great interest to students of sociology, politics, and media and cultural studies. It will also appeal to a wider readership interested in social and political issues.

Book A Lifelong Affair

Download or read book A Lifelong Affair written by Bethine C. Church and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Bethine Church moved to Washington, D.C., in 1957 with her son and her husband, Frank -- Idaho's newly elected Democratic senator and, at 32, the youngest member of the senate -- she was warned by the wife of a veteran politician that she would end up hating the capital. All the light will shine on her husband, and she will wither away in his shadow. But Bethine had been Frank's political partner since their earliest days together and she saw no reason why that would change. And in fact it didn't. In her own winsome words, A Lifelong Affair is the fascinating story of the woman people called "The Third Senator from Idaho." Critical chapters of our history, from civil rights battles and the Vietnam War to Senator Church's chairmanship of the Senate Intelligence Committee, come vividly to life here, as does the idealism and love of people that animate Bethine Church's entire career in politics. Bethine grew up in an Idaho family steeped in politics. Her father and an uncle both served as governor of Idaho; her cousin was a U.S. senator. Bethine's first active role in politics was in a campaign in the early 1930s, when she asked a shoe clerk to "boat for my daddy." In high school she was the one girl in a gang of students who gathered every week at Bethine's house to sit around and talk politics with her father. Those were the days of innocence in the West, when politics was seen as a civic duty, when winning an election depended on which candidate worked the hardest, shook the most hands, and could energize a crowd at a county fair or a church bazaar. Politics had not yet been distorted by huge advertizing budgets, corporate donations, media blitzes, and public cynicism. Besides being a tale of a political woman, A Lifelong Affair is a poignant love story. Close friends in high school, Bethine and Frank married after he returned from World War II service in China. Together they battled Frank's first encounter with cancer when he was a 24-year-old Stanford law student. That searing experience set the tone for their life together fighting as a team for causes they believed in strongly. When cancer reappeared in a more virulent form in the early 1980s, they couldn't beat it, and Frank died at the still young age of 59. Bethine, now in her eightieth year, remains active in Democratic politics at all levels and in Idaho wilderness preservation. Book jacket.

Book An Affair of State

Download or read book An Affair of State written by Richard A. Posner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Bill Clinton’s year of crisis, which began when his affair with Monica Lewinsky hit the front pages in January 1998, engendered a host of important questions of criminal and constitutional law, public and private morality, and political and cultural conflict. In a book written while the events of the year were unfolding, Richard Posner presents a balanced and scholarly understanding of the crisis that also has the freshness and immediacy of journalism. Posner clarifies the issues and eliminates misunderstandings concerning facts and the law that were relevant to the investigation by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr and to the impeachment proceeding itself. He explains the legal definitions of obstruction of justice and perjury, which even many lawyers are unfamiliar with. He carefully assesses the conduct of Starr and his prosecutors, including their contacts with the lawyers for Paula Jones and their hardball tactics with Monica Lewinsky and her mother. He compares and contrasts the Clinton affair with Watergate, Iran–Contra, and the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, exploring the subtle relationship between public and private morality. And he examines the place of impeachment in the American constitutional scheme, the pros and cons of impeaching President Clinton, and the major procedural issues raised by both the impeachment in the House and the trial in the Senate. This book, reflecting the breadth of Posner’s experience and expertise, will be the essential foundation for anyone who wants to understand President Clinton’s impeachment ordeal.

Book Scandal and American Politics in the 21st Century

Download or read book Scandal and American Politics in the 21st Century written by Robert Busby and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how scandal allegations have been managed in the contemporary era in the United States and how understandings of the impact of scandal on political credibility have changed over time. It incorporates prominent scandals, at both federal and state level, in which sudden and unexpected revelations created an uncertain political environment. The primary focus is on sex scandals and how damage limitation strategies have been utilized in order to try to limit and accommodate a demise in political standing. The book considers how damage limitation strategies were utilized, the core components of each, and their impact on the political standing of the individuals involved. Rather than marking the end of a political journey, scandal increasingly appears to be an issue that can be perceived as a temporary impediment in a political career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, and countless other politicians have made headlines for their sexual scandals. But such stories are not new. Indeed, there is a long history of misbehavior in politics, including in the nation’s highest office. Bill Clinton, it can safely be said, was not the first president to misbehave, nor was he the worst. In fact, there is a long history of presidential peccadilloes. Many presidents have been influenced and had their careers affected by the hand of a woman, sometimes that of a wife or mother, but at other times that of a mistress. But these stories are rarely told. Instead, history has tended to glorify our leaders. Such a scrubbed version of the lives of presidents, however, omits their marital woes, love lives, and sexual peccadilloes. As Robert P. Watson reveals, it is precisely these intimate and all-too-human moments that provide some of the most valuable insights into our leaders. Affairs of State is not just about sex and scandal—the “who did it” of history—although such incidents are described in detail. It is a book about love, marriage, and affairs in the White House, offering an intimate character study of the First Couples who made history.
