Book excerpt: "James Morehead's Canvas opens itself to the poetry of everyday life, where stanzas are etched in sand, and poems end in sunset. Combining micro-narratives of Boston bullies cornering a young boy, with minute descriptions of time in quarantine, it draws us into moving tableaus of tenacious attention to what went down, what might come up, and where we might find ourselves. These are poems to be savored, re-read, kept handy for those times when only poetry will do." ‒ W. J. T. MITCHELL, Senior Editor of Critical Inquiry and Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor, English and Art History, University of Chicago In his debut collection, James Morehead paints powerful images of life, love, and loss through the thoughtful selection and careful placement of words. "canvas" features the extraordinary art of Kari Byron and Alla Tsank. The year 2020 and its pandemic-induced solitude inspired the poems that lead this collection. Most are autobiographical, in particular the title poem “canvas,” and collectively form a fragmented memoir of memories and melancholy. Some are fanciful, like “tethered,” inspired by a fleeting image seen while hiking the Pacific coastline. All strive to paint images in the reader’s mind through the power of poetry. “James creates an enchanting melody of poetic sound for the reader page after page. He notices life’s details with a tender yet precise eye, down to the ‘streets glistening with midnight rain’ and ‘summer bursting outwards / fierce from its slumber.’ Using this keen observation, James breaks past life’s routines to uncover gems of beauty. To read Canvas is to be transported to a world infused with meaning and memory.” - Morgan Liphart, author of Barefoot and Running

Book excerpt: The essays in this volume present a thorough re-evaluation of the idea of place for the twenty-first century, linking across theoretical interests in space and spatialisation and in motion and mobility. ‘Placing’ becomes an active process that happens in different parts of the world, and there is work here from the countries of the United Kingdom, from Ireland, the USA, Australia and mainland Europe. Placing also happens in different contexts, in the Production of visual images, in translation, in performance and in poetry that is both ‘there’ and ‘here’. The range of poets under consideration matches the breadth of the range of the Contributors. International in scope, and drawn from a variety of practices and processes, their combination in a single volume leads to unusual connections and new readings of their work.

Book excerpt: 11 poems structured and written to strike the mind as paintings. Green Jr was influenced by the feelings of strolling through art galleries thinking of the depth of the pieces on the wall. He wanted to give the reader that brief curiosity before understanding the art and connecting with the artist. This feeling is evident in the pieces "Inevitable" and "Old Things". He opens with "Red and Gray boxes" which is an ode to his beloved sneakers. He writes on how he removes his shoes from the shoe boxes and uses the boxes as storage for pages of poetry and he inadvertently claims to write as much as he walks. In the poem "Glass roof for a mural" which is a dedication to his youngest brother he gets personal speaking on being a positive figure in the eyes of the youth. Collectively these poems make for a masterpiece as well as serves as insight to the writing style that will be used in his third major poetry project "FreezeBurnDrown" due next summer. Book excerpt: From the heartland of Islam arise poems of fiery love and peace, composed by a modern-day female poet descended from a long line of Meccan (from Mecca) scholars. Reflecting the pulsing, indivisible bridge of the works of great Sufi mystics and poets to modern times, these spiritual pieces recall the beloved works of Rabi'ah Al 'Adawiyyah, Rumi and Hafiz. From the land of Arabia where Sufism has been long cloaked in mystery, despite its early roots stemming in the very City of the Prophet, this volume serves to transcend time through filling the existing gap between the early beginnings and the little-known Sufi traditions of current-day puritanical Arabia. These poems also highlight the global and local Sufi spirit enlivening the younger generation. The shedding of the ego, humility and the quest for spiritual heights are glimpsed in this rare volume of verse. Drawing on a rich religious legacy and led by the Sufi tradition seeking Unity, the poems cover aspects related to spirituality and present-day challenges. The inspiring combination of the traditional and modern in these compositions will touch the inner souls and captivate the hearts of those interested in Higher Love in these turbulent times of transition and frantic search for peace.

Book The Life of August Wilhelm Schlegel Cosmopolitan of Art and Poetry

Download or read book The Life of August Wilhelm Schlegel Cosmopolitan of Art and Poetry written by Roger Paulin and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale biography, in any language, of a towering figure in German and European Romanticism: August Wilhelm Schlegel whose life, 1767 to 1845, coincided with its inexorable rise. As poet, translator, critic and oriental scholar, Schlegel's extraordinarily diverse interests and writings left a vast intellectual legacy, making him a foundational figure in several branches of knowledge. He was one of the last thinkers in Europe able to practise as well as to theorise, and to attempt to comprehend the nature of culture without being forced to be a narrow specialist. With his brother Friedrich, for example, Schlegel edited the avant-garde Romantic periodical Athenaeum; and he produced with his wife Caroline a translation of Shakespeare, the first metrical version into any foreign language. Schlegel's Lectures on Dramatic Art and Literature were a defining force for Coleridge and for the French Romantics. But his interests extended to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese literature, as well to the Greek and Latin classics, and to Sanskrit. August Wilhelm Schlegel is the first attempt to engage with this totality, to combine an account of Schlegel’s life and times with a critical evaluation of his work and its influence. Through the study of one man's rich life, incorporating the most recent scholarship, theoretical approaches, and archival resources, while remaining easily accessible to all readers, Paulin has recovered the intellectual climate of Romanticism in Germany and traced its development into a still-potent international movement. The extraordinarily wide scope and variety of Schlegel's activities have hitherto acted as a barrier to literary scholars, even in Germany. In Roger Paulin, whose career has given him the knowledge and the experience to grapple with such an ambitious project, Schlegel has at last found a worthy exponent.

This short book of poetry tells the story of a young woman who realized she was bisexual, and began to question all she knew. Told in four chapters, using the language of myth and fantastical metaphor, it paints an intimate picture of her evolution from innocence and suppression, to horror and liberation, to trauma and loneliness, and finally, to healing and purpose. For anyone who has felt the pang of doubt, or has found themselves in the dark, this poetry is for you, with love.
