Meanwhile, on Zhra, Joran seeks to liberate his people, but Qhatan’s minions stalk him in Zhra’s subterranean tunnels, and as Jalath travels the states of Neptu looking for candidates to establish a new colony on Earth, a group of zealots will stop at nothing to discredit Jalath’s knowledge and work. Book The Lost Planets

  • Author : John Wenz
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2019-10-08
  • ISBN : 0262354624

Download or read book The Lost Planets written by John Wenz and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating account of the pioneering astronomer who claimed (erroneously) to have discovered a planet outside the solar system. There are innumerable planets revolving around innumerable stars across our galaxy. Between 2009 and 2018, NASA's Kepler space telescope discovered thousands of them. But exoplanets—planets outside the solar system—appeared in science fiction before they appeared in telescopes. Astronomers in the early decades of the twentieth century spent entire careers searching for planets in other stellar systems. In The Lost Planets, John Wenz offers an account of the pioneering astronomer Peter van de Kamp, who was one of the first to claim discovery of exoplanets. Van de Kamp, working at Swarthmore College's observatory, announced in 1963 that he had identified a planet around Barnard's Star, the second-closest star system to the Sun. He cited the deviations in Barnard's star's path—“wobbles” that suggested a large object was lurching around the star. Van de Kamp became something of a celebrity (appearing on a television show with “Mr. Wizard,” Don Henry), but subsequent research did not support his claims. Wenz describes van de Kamp's stubborn refusal to accept that he was wrong, discusses the evidence found by other researchers, and explains recent advances in exoplanet detection, including transit, radial velocity, direct imaging, and microlensing. Van de Kamp retired from Swarthmore in 1972, and died in 1995 at 93. In 2009, Swarthmore named its new observatory the Peter van de Kamp Observatory. In the 1990s, astronomers discovered and confirmed the first planet outside our solar system. In 2018, an exoplanet was detected around Barnard's Star—not, however, the one van de Kamp thought he had discovered in 1963.

Book Dis Orienting Planets

Download or read book Dis Orienting Planets written by Isiah Lavender III and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Suparno Banerjee, Cait Coker, Jeshua Enriquez, Joan Gordon, Veronica Hollinger, Malisa Kurtz, Stephanie Li, Bradford Lyau, Uppinder Mehan, Graham J. Murphy, Baryon Tensor Posadas, Amy J. Ransom, Robin Anne Reid, Haerin Shin, Stephen Hong Sohn, Takayuki Tatsumi, and Timothy J. Yamamura Isiah Lavender III's Dis-Orienting Planets amplifies critical issues surrounding the racial and ethnic dimensions of science fiction. This edited volume explores depictions of Asia and Asians in science fiction literature, film, and fandom with particular regard to China, Japan, India, and Korea. Dis-Orienting Planets highlights so-called yellow and brown peoples from the constellation of a historically white genre. The collection launches into political representations of Asian identity in science fiction's imagination, from fear of the Yellow Peril and its racist stereotypes to techno-Orientalism and the remains of a postcolonial heritage. Thus the essays, by contributors such as Takayuki Tatsumi, Veronica Hollinger, Uppinder Mehan, and Stephen Hong Sohn, reconfigure the very study of race in science fiction. A follow-up to Lavender's Black and Brown Planets, this collection expands the racial politics governing the renewed visibility of Asia in science fiction. One of the few on this subject, the volume probes Gary Shteyngart's novel Super Sad True Love Story, the acclaimed film Cloud Atlas, and Guillermo del Toro's monster film Pacific Rim, among others. Dis-Orienting Planets embarks on a wide-ranging assessment of Asian representations in science fiction, upon the determination that our visions of the future must include all people of color.

Book Life on Other Planets

Download or read book Life on Other Planets written by Aomawa Shields, PhD and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning and inspiring memoir charting a life as an astronomer, classically-trained actor, mother, and Black woman in STEM, searching for life in the universe while building a meaningful life here on Earth As a kid, Aomawa Shields was always bumping into things, her neck craned up at the sky, dreaming of becoming an astronaut. A year into an astrophysics PhD program, plagued by self-doubt and discouraged by a white male professor who suggested that she—a young Black woman who also loved fashion, makeup, and the arts—didn’t belong, she left astronomy and pursued acting professionally for a decade, before a day job working for NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope drew her back to the stars. She was the oldest and the only Black student in her PhD cohort. This time, no professor, and no voice in her own head, would stop her. Now an astronomer and astrobiologist at the top of her field, Dr. Shields studies the universe outside our Solar System, researching and uncovering the planets circling distant stars with just the right conditions that could support life—while also using her theater education to communicate the wonder and magic of the universe with those of us here on Earth. But it’s been a journey as winding and complex as the physics she has mastered. Life on Other Planets is a journey of discovery on this world and on others, a story of creating a life that makes space for joy, love, and wonder while being driven by one of our biggest questions: Is anybody else out there? It is about the possibility of living between multiple worlds and not choosing—but instead charting a new path entirely.

Book For Kings and Planets

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ethan Canin
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2013-03-06
  • ISBN : 0307831329
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book For Kings and Planets written by Ethan Canin and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethan Canin is one of America's finest writers. He has been called "brilliant" by the Los Angeles Times, "a tremendous talent" by the Chicago Sun-Times, and "dazzling" by Walker Percy. The bestselling author of The Palace Thief and Emperor of the Air now gives us this stunning new novel, For Kings and Planets. "Years later, Orno Tarcher would think of his days in New York as a seduction. A seduction and a near miss, a time when his memory of the world around him --the shining stone stairwells, the taxicabs, the sea of nighttime lights--was glinting and of heroic proportion. Like a dream." So begins this remarkable novel about the lives of two young men and the women they love. Orno Tarcher arrives in New York City from a small town in Missouri, feeling unsophisticated and disadvantaged by his family's bedrock values. He meets Marshall Emerson, the charismatic gem of a worldly family, a seductive and brilliant New Yorker who is revealed, as time passes, to be bent on destruction. The novel explores with depth and sophistication the conflicts of character at the heart of every life, the desire for grandeur and the lure of normalcy, the tension between rivalry and friendship, fathers and sons, love and betrayal. For Kings and Planets is the story of a man who thinks of himself as moral, who tests his character against power, deception, and seduction. It is also the story of a friendship fractured by love. For Kings and Planets is a remarkable achievement, another fiction classic by the writer who has been called "a worthy successor to...Philip Roth, Elizabeth Bishop, and Robert Penn Warren."

Book Planets and Their Effects

Download or read book Planets and Their Effects written by Saket Shah and published by Saket Shah. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding planets & their effects: ... Each planet emanates certain energy while moving through the zodiac circle. Some planets move faster like Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus, these are called inner planets and they affect us in a more personal and rapid manner, influencing our daily life, impulses and mood. All planets in solar system are revolving around Sun in a predefined pattern. That’s how we know when to wake up and when to go to bed. Planets however govern a lot more than just occurrence of day and night or eclipses and tides. Planets have a direct impact on us, despite being several light years away. While the position of planets does not dictate our everyday actions, it does have a profound and close influence on our life and destiny. Understanding planets & their effects: Much like nobody forces Moon to orbit Earth, humans are also under no force to act in a certain way but everything in the universe is correlated and works in sync so naturally, the movement of planets affects our actions as a result, much like our actions affect the environment. Human body is in fact made of elements present in the Universe. The structure of our brain is very much similar to the structure of universe. Everything that happens to the Universe happens to us. Our own magnetic field aligns with the Earth’s magnetic field. Each object in the Universe, be it humans, Earth, planets and stars in our galaxy move in a precise symphony so we have to connect ourselves to these energy sources to receive the vibrations and function better. Each planet emanates certain energy while moving through the zodiac circle. Some planets move faster like Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus, these are called inner planets and they affect us in a more personal and rapid manner, influencing our daily life, impulses and mood. The outer planets move slowly in the sky, some even take as much as 2.5 years to change a sign. These include Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu and these planets have a more profound and long-lasting impact on us, unlike say Moon. Astrological significance of planets: Every planet rules a zodiac sign except Rahu and Ketu, which are in fact not actual planets but two reference points in the sky. Rahu and Ketu are the points where the paths of the Sun and Moon intersect with each other. Rahu is the north lunar node, the Head of the dragon as per mythology and Ketu is the south lunar node. The qualities of the zodiac signs somewhat align with the characteristics of the planets. For instance, impulsive and active Aries is ruled by fiery Mars, dreamy Pisces is ruled by spiritual Jupiter, emotional Cancer is ruled by motherly Moon while confident Leo is ruled by masculine Sun.
