Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is an exciting novel, and it both entertains and prompts introspection and reflection upon what it means to be an American." ~ Forward Reviews - May, 2016 "A thoughtful reflection on race and ambition in America." ~ Kirkus Reviews - May, 2016 "It is eminently readable...a compelling tale that rings disturbingly true." ~ Blueink Review - April, 2016 William Herbert, known to everyone by his middle name, Gordon, grows up in Trinidad dreaming of bigger things, and takes a job aboard the SS Mariposa in January, 1915. He spends grueling nights shoveling coal in the boiler room, but takes pleasure in the work. The ship has electric lights, modern plumbing, radio, navigation devices, and comfortable passenger staterooms; it is a floating symbol of all that is modern in the twentieth century. Craving this newness and the opportunity to make his mark on the world, he jumps ship in New York City even though he could be deported. He slips into the streets of Harlem and ultimately makes his way to the trenches of World War I, where he becomes a second lieutenant with the Buffalo Soldiers as he seeks his rightful place in America. Whether it's dealing with the mob that's chasing him through the dangerous streets of New York's Hell's Kitchen, battling German soldiers, or facing his most insidious enemy, his own military commanders who resent black officers, Gordon never stops reaching for his dreams in A Place near the Front.

Book excerpt: The Place Between Here and There If you are grieving from a heartbreaking loss of a loved one, this book may help you find peace. If you are wondering if all you see here on earth is all that is, this book may bring some light to your thoughts. If you are a person who believes in the infinite spirit inside each of us, this book may be an affirmation of all that you hold sacred. After an accident leaves a loving father in a coma, on the verge of life and death, he travels to another place. On the outside, he was in a hospital bed; but, on the inside he was in place he calls, "The Place Between Here and There." It was a place where time did not exist; where people were spirits; and where he learned the wisdom of the universe. This book details his journey to this wondrous place, then back to earth, where he must rehabilitate from grave injuries, only to then experience the worst tragedy a parent can imagine. With the help of a soul connection from the higher realms, he finds his way back to the peace and bliss he learned from The Place Between Here and There. Authors Note: Kathie and I are humbled by all the kind words of support for this book on Peace, Love and Light and the realization the life has a purpose, for ourselves and the universe in its entirety. Life is good and people are good, even when bad things happen. This book discusses that thought and demonstrates that even in these challenging times that there is indeed light, and that light is beautiful. Bob Wrote: I was finding it hard to not feel depressed during this current health and economic crisis. My wife gifted me your book "The Place Between Here and There", because she thought it would make me feel better. I read late into the night. This morning, there is sunshine. I feel a new strength and see with a bigger perspective. I just want to say the book is tremendous and will fascinate and help so many people for years to come. There are many people I am excited to share this with, people in my family who will benefit greatly from this book, and I will proudly pass this gift along to everyone. Tracy Wrote: Yesterday, I read 70 pages in one sitting. I just did not want to put the book down!! I had such a range of emotions - love, heartache, happiness, inspiration, and awe. I finished the book so quickly, and I usually do not read books often. It reaffirms that in love we can find happiness and there is more to us beyond what we see here on Earth. Caroline Wrote: This book is beautiful! It came to me 2 days after my grandmothers passing. And while I already share the same beliefs as the authors, I still found it incredibly enlightening and comforting. Thank you for sharing your experience. I experienced many epiphanies and connected things for the first time while reading it.

Book Adpositions

Download or read book Adpositions written by Dennis Kurzon and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of articles which deal with adpositions in a variety of languages and from a number of perspectives. Not only does the book cover what is traditionally treated in studies from a European and Semitic orientation – prepositions, but it presents studies on postpositions, too. The main languages dealt with in the collection are English, French and Hebrew, but there are articles devoted to other languages including Korean, Turkic languages, Armenian, Russian and Ukrainian. Adpositions are treated by some authors from a semantic perspective, by others as syntactic units, and a third group of authors distinguishes adpositions from the point of view of their pragmatic function. This work is of interest to students and researchers in theoretical and applied linguistics, as well as to those who have a special interest in any of the languages treated.

Book Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka

Download or read book Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka written by Nikolaĭ Vasilʹevich Gogolʹ and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the autumn of 1831, some easter from the Poltava province issued a book under the tantalizing title "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". The simple-hearted villager, as if in a frightened way, recommended to the enlightened public four fantastic stories allegedly told at gatherings in his modest hut. "This is real gaiety, sincere, unconstrained, without cheating, without being stiff. In some places, what poetry! What sensitivity!"--So welcomed the new book Pushkin. He knew that, under the mask of an old farmer, a twenty-two-year-old writer is hiding, happily inventing and colorful characters (daring dudes, dazzling marvels, stubborn old men, angry women, mermaids, witches, devils - in a word, all sorts of people and nonhumans), and funny storytellers, and the collector himself invariably "truthful" nonsense - Rudy Pank. Nowadays the name of the writer "Evenings ..." is known to all, in 1831, very few knew him. But among them were two great poets - Zhukovsky ..." --Vasha Kniga

Book Studies in the History of the Near East

Download or read book Studies in the History of the Near East written by P.M. Holt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1973. This volume brings together a number of studies concerned with the Near East and its history from the sixteenth century. They fall into three groups. The first is concerned with English Arabists of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and particularly with Edward Pococke. The papers in the second group deal with the history of the Nilotic Sudan, and especially attempt to exploit the sparse source-materials available on the Funj Sultanate and to throw some light on developments between the sixteenth and the nineteenth century. Another dark age in modern Near Eastern history is the subject of the third group of papers-the period of Egyptian history from the Ottoman conquest in 1517 to the French occupation in 1798.

Book A History of Moonville Ohio and a Collection of Its Haunting Tales

Download or read book A History of Moonville Ohio and a Collection of Its Haunting Tales written by William M. Cullen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Moonville, Ohio and a Collection of its Haunting Tales, Revised Edition, is an updated version of a previous work the author had published back in 2008. This revised edition contains more detailed history about Moonville and its surrounding towns, such as Zaleski, on how they came to be, most notably that Moonville was named by the railroad after a general store proprietor rather than the man who had actually founded the town; and that Zaleski was named after a Polish/French financier who never came to America to see his namesake town. This revised edition also contains more haunting tales of what had happened to some of those who had lived and worked in this remote mining town in eastern Vinton County, Ohio, mainly covering those who had been involved in train accidents surrounding the still-standing tunnel as these trains came barreling through the area; plus, there are a few tales of murder as well. There are also a few light-hearted tales most notably that of a well-known English author who had passed through Moonville on his way to tour America back in the late 1860s as well as a story about some feisty sisters, in Athens, who took on the expanding railroad. There are human interest elements in all of this, most notably to me, is the story of the Dexters who had been enslaved in Virginia, escaping in the 1860s, having made their way to Moonville in order to live out their lives in freedom. This book is about preserving the history of a mining town that began back in the 1850s, thriving for nearly fifty years, before it began its long slide into history, though not completely forgotten, for it had been, once, a vital part of Ohios history, especially in the days leading up to the American Civil War; and that is why I wrote and revised this work - for Moonvilles history is a part of Ohios history.
