Book A Pilgrimage to the Promised Land and Beyond Color

Download or read book A Pilgrimage to the Promised Land and Beyond Color written by Stephen Lucas and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-04-18 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comes from a paper written to satisfy the requirement for the School of Prophets PhD course for a 21-Day Study Trip to Israel, Jordan (Petra), Turkey and Italy (Rome). The Bible is a book of places. Therefore, this review focuses on the places we visit, their Bible references and the impressions that were made on us. We'll never read the Bible, or listen to the news in Israel, the same way again, because we've been there and seen those places and can still picture them in our mind's eye every day. The tour iss presented through the lens of Bible Prophecy -- past present and future. This book has a similar view and uses the present tense, as a diary, describing the sights we see. The tour is led by Dr. Jimmy DeYoung as part of the PhD program of his School of Prophets, in conjunction with Louisiana Baptist University, from which Dr. DeYoung received his PhD. The book is organized by the ten most memorable events that we experience, each as a chapter, with other events, in time sequence, bridging between these ten chapters. Those ten events are:1. Bus into the city of Jerusalem, playing its song, The Holy City (Jerusalem)...2. Standing at the "tower of the flock" site, where the shepherds would find the baby Jesus, on the first evening in Israel.3. The length and width of the Jezreel/Jordan/Riff Valley.4. Where Jesus was baptized on the Jordan River.5. The Eastern Bridge from the Temple to the Mt. of Olives. 6. Swimming in the Dead and Red Seas.7. Eilat: viewing 4 countries while boating in the Red Sea.8. The size of the ruins of Ephesus and Laodicea.9. The Arch of Titus in Rome; the missing Temple menorah.10. Site of the False Church; where the Common Market agreement was signed - Rome Rising Major impressions of the trip through Israel, Jordan (Petra), Turkey (the 7 Churches of Revelation 2 & 3) and Italy (Rome Rising) are:o Reading the Bible will never be the same!o Seeing where Jesus was born, baptized, died and buried.o Walking the Via Dolorosa through the Old City; praying at the Wailing Wall.o Looking over the Jezreel Valley from Mt. Carmel, imagining a young Jesus there.o Standing on the Mount of Olives where Jesus will return; looking to the Eastern gate of the Temple Mount.o Climbing to the top row of the Ephesus amphitheater where Paul spoke.o Seeing the sources of the hot/cold waters into Laodicea.o Viewing the frescos of the sacking of Jerusalem in the Arch of Titus. o Sitting before the Vatican, in St. Peter's Square, contemplating the false church of Revelation 17 and viewing the site where the Common Market agreement (foreshadowing the European Union) was signed, the early signs of Rome Rising.

Book Travels with Tocqueville Beyond America

Download or read book Travels with Tocqueville Beyond America written by Jeremy Jennings and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory intellectual biography of Tocqueville, told through his wide-ranging travels—most of them, aside from his journey to America, barely known. It might be the most famous journey in the history of political thought: in 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville sailed from France to the United States, spent nine months touring and observing the political culture of the fledgling republic, and produced the classic Democracy in America. But the United States was just one of the many places documented by the inveterate traveler. Jeremy Jennings follows Tocqueville’s voyages—by sailing ship, stagecoach, horseback, train, and foot—across Europe, North Africa, and of course North America. Along the way, Jennings reveals underappreciated aspects of Tocqueville’s character and sheds new light on the depth and range of his political and cultural commentary. Despite recurrent ill health and ever-growing political responsibilities, Tocqueville never stopped moving or learning. He wanted to understand what made political communities tick, what elite and popular mores they rested on, and how they were adjusting to rapid social and economic change—the rise of democracy and the Industrial Revolution, to be sure, but also the expansion of empire and the emergence of socialism. He lauded the orderly, Catholic-dominated society of Quebec; presciently diagnosed the boisterous but dangerously chauvinistic politics of Germany; considered England the freest and most unequal place on Earth; deplored the poverty he saw in Ireland; and championed French colonial settlement in Algeria. Drawing on correspondence, published writings, speeches, and the recollections of contemporaries, Travels with Tocqueville Beyond America is a panoramic combination of biography, history, and political theory that fully reflects the complex, restless mind at its center.

Book excerpt: This compelling autobiography narrates the story of immigration rights activist Mary Antin, and her enlightening journey from early life in Russia to her migration and Americanisation in late nineteenth-century USA. The Promised Land is an introspective first-hand account of life as a Jewish American immigrant. Mary Antin was just 12-years-old when she arrived in Boston with her family and she underwent a great deal of change and development before she could call the USA her home. Antin’s autobiography details how the young Jewish girl escaped Czarist Russia and adapted to an entirely new culture and lifestyle. Antin explores her memories of public school and accompanies powerful historical context with hard-hitting political commentary. The Promised Land is one person’s story, but speaks for the millions who have had all too similar experiences. This gripping volume includes fascinating chapters such as: - Children of the Law - Daily Bread - The Exodus - The Initiation - ‘My Country’ - A Child’s Paradise Now in a new edition, Read & Co. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current global tensions and the spread of terrorism have resurrected in the West a largely negative perception of Islamic society, an ill will fueled by centuries of conflict and prejudice. Shedding light on the history behind these hostile feelings, Frederick Quinn's timely volume traces the Western image of Islam from its earliest days to recent times. Quinn establishes four basic themes around which the image of Islam gravitates throughout history: the Prophet as Antichrist, heretic, and Satan; the Prophet as Fallen Christian, corrupted monk, or Arab Lucifer; the prophet as sexual deviant, polygamist, and charlatan, and the Prophet as Wise Easterner, Holy Person, and dispenser of wisdom. A feature of the book is a strong portrayal of Islam in literature, art, music, and popular culture, drawing on such sources as Cervantes's Don Quixote; the Orientalism of numerous visual artists; the classical music of Monteverdi and Mozart; and more recent cultural manifestations, such as music hall artists like Peter Dawson and Edith Piaf; and stage or silver screen representations like The Garden of Allah, The Sheik, Aladdin, and The Battle of Algiers. Quinn argues that an outpouring of positive information on basically every aspect of Islamic life has yet to vanquish the hostile and malformed ideas from the past. Conflict, mistrust, and misunderstanding characterize the Muslim-Christian encounter, and growing examples of cooperation are often overshadowed by anger and suspicion. In this important book, Quinn highlights long-standing historical prejudices but also introduces the reader to some of the landmark voices in history that have worked toward a greater understanding of Islam.
