Book excerpt: Settled on the banks of the Potomac River, Cumberland has watched time and progress stream through since its days as a fort in the colonial wilderness. Ascending the throne as the "Queen of the Alleghenies," the town became an essential transportation and industrial hub throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Serving as the starting point for the National Road, the western terminus of the C&O Canal, and an important link along the B&O and Western Maryland Railroads, Cumberland attracted dozens of industries that churned out glass, textiles, tires, and even local brews. Prosperity and growth began to reshape the town, and soon distinct neighborhoods found their own identities while maintaining their strong links to Cumberland as a whole. Despite a post-war decline in its industrial sector, Cumberland continues to be a vibrant town of hardworking people who remain proud of their rich heritage and traditions. Selected from a variety of local sources, photographs in Images of America: Cumberland offer unique and memorable views of the people and places that have defined Cumberland over the past 150 years.

This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Cumberland, (Maryland) From the Time of the Indian Town, Caiuctucuc, in 1728, Up to the Present Day: Embracing an Account of Washington's First Campaign, and Battle of Fort Necessity, Together With a History of Braddock's Expedition, &C., &C., &C Some of the ideas originally entertained as to the s00pe of this work have been, of necessity, abandoned. Of these, I may mention the purpose of recording the family history of the first, or earlier, settlers of the town. Satisfactory data as to but few of these families can now be obtained, despite most strenuous efforts made in that direction. Consequently this purpose could not be carried out without laying the author open to the charge of invidious discrimination. Book Railroading around Cumberland

Download or read book Railroading around Cumberland written by Patrick H. Stakem and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located at the confluence of Wills Creek and the Potomac River, Cumberland, Maryland, is known as the Queen City of the Alleghenies. Because of the unique geography of the mountain passes, Cumberland became a transportation nexus between the Eastern Seaboard and the inland bounty of the United States. The National Road, a federal project initiated by Pres. Thomas Jefferson, passes through Cumberland, as does the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and Canal. Rail lines and roads stretch out west, south, and north to industrial, agricultural, and natural resource areas. Regional short-line railroads served to move coal to the loading docks of the canal in Cumberland. Today the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad features steam-power excursions from the old Western Maryland Station next to the canal basin, while 6,000-horsepower diesels haul heavy freight through the CSX Yards in South Cumberland.
