Book A Phonetic English to Arawak Dictionary

Download or read book A Phonetic English to Arawak Dictionary written by Damon Corrie and published by Damon Corrie. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absolute MOST IMPORTANT FACT you need to know is that there is no 'right' way to write the Lokono-Arawak language, remember it was NEVER a written language, in fact, I am the first person in the world to write my Tribal language PHONETICALLY - as people who speak English as their first language SHOULD pronounce it. I say this because even though there is no 'right' way to write it - there IS a right way to PRONOUNCE it (in each regional dialect)! However, even this is not a universal absolute...because in Lokono-Arawak we have regional dialects & sub-dialects of our language, just as there are regional/national & sub-dialects of the English language. So likewise, be cognizant of the fact that the Lokono in Venezuela, and the Lokono in Suriname, and the Lokono in French Guiana, and the Lokono in Guyana - all speak regional dialects (and sub-dialects) - and they ALL have added foreign words to our language, which I have omitted from MY work here, so the reader gets only a PURE and ORIGINAL traditional Lokono language to learn.

Book Conversational structures of Alto Peren Arawak of Peru

Download or read book Conversational structures of Alto Peren Arawak of Peru written by Elena Mihas and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive fieldwork in the research community, the book is a focused exploration of discourse patterns of Alto Perené Arawak, with emphasis on conversational structures. The book’s methodological scaffold is based on proposals and insights from multiple research fields, such as comparative conversation analysis, sociology, interactional linguistics, documentary linguistics, anthropological linguistics, and prosodic typology. The interactional patterns of a small Arawak language of Peru are shown to share the common infrastructure reported in the organization of conversation across other languages and cultures. Yet the analysis demonstrates a variety of unique nuances in the organization of interactional behavior of Alto Perené Arawak participants. The peculiarities observed are attributed to the language-specific semiotic resources and participants’ orientation to the local cultural norms. The book’s structured examination of conversational data of a small indigenous language of South America is anticipated to be of utility to linguistic research on understudied non-Western languages.

Book Languages of the Pre Columbian Antilles

Download or read book Languages of the Pre Columbian Antilles written by Julian Granberry and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A linguistic analysis supporting a new model of the colonization of the Antilles before 1492 This work formulates a testable hypothesis of the origins and migration patterns of the aboriginal peoples of the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico), the Lucayan Islands (the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the Crown Colony of the Turks and Caicos), the Virgin Islands, and the northernmost of the Leeward Islands, prior to European contact. Using archaeological data as corroboration, the authors synthesize evidence that has been available in scattered locales for more than 500 years but which has never before been correlated and critically examined. Within any well-defined geographical area (such as these islands), the linguistic expectation and norm is that people speaking the same or closely related language will intermarry, and, by participating in a common gene pool, will show similar socioeconomic and cultural traits, as well as common artifact preferences. From an archaeological perspective, the converse is deducible: artifact inventories of a well-defined sociogeographical area are likely to have been created by speakers of the same or closely related language or languages. Languages of the Pre-Columbian Antilles presents information based on these assumptions. The data is scant—scattered words and phrases in Spanish explorers' journals, local place names written on maps or in missionary records—but the collaboration of the authors, one a linguist and the other an archaeologist, has tied the linguistics to the ground wherever possible and allowed the construction of a framework with which to understand the relationships, movements, and settlement patterns of Caribbean peoples before Columbus arrived.

Download or read book World Englishes Problems Properties and Prospects written by Thomas Hoffmann and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Englishes is a vibrant research field that has attracted scholars from many different linguistic subdisciplines. Emphasizing the common ground of all research on World Englishes, the 22 articles in this collected volume, selected from more than a hundred papers presented at the 2007 conference of the International Association for World Englishes in Regensburg, cover a broad range of topics which together reflect the state of the art of research in this field. The volume focuses on regions as diverse as Africa, the Caribbean, the Antipodes and Asia, but also promotes a globally comparative perspective by analyzing selected characteristics of the English language across a wide range of varieties. Methodologically, a number of different approaches are applied, including corpus linguistic studies, socio-phonetics as well as historical discourse analysis. Due to its wide scope, the book is of interest not only to World Englishes scholars but also to sociolinguists as well as applied, contact or corpus linguists.

Book Language Change in Contact Languages

Download or read book Language Change in Contact Languages written by J. Clancy Clements and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies in Language Change in Contact Languages showcase the contributions that the study of contact language varieties make to the understanding of phenomena such as relexification, transfer, reanalysis, grammaticalization, prosodic variation and the development of prosodic systems. Four of the studies deal with morphosyntactic issues while the other three address questions of prosody. The studies include data from the Atlantic creoles (Saramaccan, Sranan, Haitian Creole, Jamaican Creole, Trinidadian Creole, Papiamentu), as well as Singapore English. This volume, originally published as special issue of Studies in Language 33:2 (2009), aims to make the work of several language contact experts available to a wider audience. The studies will be of use to any student or scholar interested in different approaches to contact-induced language processes, particularly as they relate to morphosyntax and prosody.
