Book A Patriot s History of the United States

Download or read book A Patriot s History of the United States written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-29 with total page 1350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guide Post for Patriots It has long been.'evident to everythinking mind, that there was an intense hatred'of Republican Institutions on the part of the rulers of Monarchical Governmentsin Europe, and the cause has been as evident -as the result Republi canism and Monarchy cannot both flourish together in one State, and no more can either continue in its strength and vigor, if rival nations, when one acquires an overmastring influence by its superior power. Especially is this true of the latter, when the former attains a position which renders the latter the inferior as a maritime or military power to that one, which acknowledges no superior in the State to the laws made by the people themselves, and whose executive oflicer is but the servant of the power which'created both. The United States of North America had become the haven of safety to which the oppressed of all nations fled for secu rity, and who thus became'of themselves one of the most ma terial elements of our greatness, and brought along with them the most thorough and deep seated hatred of the tyranny which we then knew only by name: but they had felt its working, and when they touched our shores became not only Republicans in theory, but active Democrats in political life, and for which unmeasured scorn has been heaped upon our party. Would to God that our own people had learned to prize our institutions as highly as did the foreigners whom our enemies so openly berated and despised It is a truth. Which time will make only more apparent, that the aristocra tic parties in Europe, at an early day, saw that the Repub lic of the West must be destroyed, or that the term of their tenure as hereditary rulers of theirvarious states, would be buta limited one. Our space precludes us from much more than referring 'to this subject, so full of food for sober thought, and replete with cause for anxcity to every lover of his coun try and of free institutions throughout the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. One nip of brandy makes the whole world kin. Have you ever studied the connection of Spirits with Revolutions? I must introduce you to the Prince, Tom. He's very grateful to you for helping Washington and Franklin score off Papa George is capital company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patriot, Vol. 1: 30 March, 1922 Naugh't shall make us rue, If England to itself do stand but true. There we have the secret at last, and it' is no secret at all; but it remains (as psycho - analysis is much in fashion) to examine into what this spirit of patriotism is, and of what it is composed. And that is a development of our question which must be considered in a future issue. Sufficient in this to say that if we are to strengthen those things which remain and are ready to perish we must cherish the patriotism of the nation as our dearest possession. Book The Patriot Vol 1

Download or read book The Patriot Vol 1 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patriot, Vol. 1: 6 April, 1922 The first set of these appendix circulars came into my hands on 2 February, in Petrograd. An additional set appeared the following day at an office where I frequently called. A third appeared in another quarter a day after wards. One set was in Russian and two in English. On 5 February I held all three sets. A possible explanation for their appearance at this time and their intent is given in Appendix 1. By themselves they were plausible, but not substantiated. Having first performed the obvious duty of analysing them for surface values and transmitting them and the analyses to Washington, I turned, therefore, to the task of further investigations. Name those who helped, but in three weeks' time the judg ment of facts became apparent. The text of the documents discloses both the methods and the effects of the German conspiracy, not alone against Russia, but the world. With each document is the indica tion of whether it is an original or photograph. With each document is an interpretative note. Book The Foundations of Strategy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundations of Strategy Classic Reprint written by Henry Melvill Johnstone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Strategy Foundations are broad and solid, but do not exhibit much detail. The art of Strategy, fully described, would be the work of a lifetime, and from its very bulk would be the despair of a publisher. But the foundations can be drawn on a reasonable expanse of paper. The object of this preface is to justify the creation of the new technical phrase, Full Strength, which is the comer-stone of this book. It is recognised every where that there is a master principle for success in war. Various efforts have been made to express this principle. Surprise and the initiative are the secret of success in war is one of these efforts. But this is not the real foundation, for you may gain all the advantage of surprise and still fail to produce as great a relative strength as was possible. Economy of force on secondary objects is another effort. This is good as far as it goes, but it does not cover the ground. You may operate in so correct a manner with regard to detachments that you have everything available for the decisive collision, While omitting to take measures that would prevent the enemy having a similar totality of available strength. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Strategy, Vol. 2 of 2 I will gladly comply with your request to write more about Strategy and its technical branch, although I must confess to being surprised at your objections to my manner of dealing with the science which you say is open to attack from the point of deep and earnest study. Frederick the Great threw off to some extent the bonds which the "scientific" rules of pedants had placed on strategy; and another hard and fast system was ruthlessly destroyed by Napoleon's genius and drastic simplicity, which gave ear to sound reason alone. Only be can become master of an art who practises it under the guidance and example of other masters, and it is from the events which have been handed down to us by history, that I seek this guidance and example. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Strategy, Vol. 1 of 2 Varying circumstances, and the uncertainty of the in formation about the enemy, often make it hard even for a good strategist to hold fast to his original resolutions and to carry out the necessary steps for their execution. The Views of the strategist may often become obscured by the cloud of contradictory reports about the enemy, and so what was before perfectly clear to him is no longer so well defined. All this renders it difficult to write well about strategy. Only those who have passed through the mental struggles which form part of its execution can be sure that their ideas upon the art will be just. I gladly wrote to you about tactics, because I had had practical experience and could tell you the results of my own Observation in war and could judge of that of others. In strategy, however, I have had but little experience, for I have had very few opportunities of being present when determinations were come to, and still fewer of expressing my own views on them. Book Patriots for Profit

Download or read book Patriots for Profit written by Thomas Bruneau and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a new approach to the analysis of civil-military relations by focusing on the effectiveness of the armed forces in fulfilling roles & missions, and on their efficiency in terms of cost. The approach is applied to the United States using official documents and interviews with policy-makers. In addition to analyzing the impact of defense reform initiatives over the past thirty years, the book includes the recent phenomenon of "contracting-out" security that has resulted in greater numbers of contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan than uniformed military personnel. While the book demonstrates that democratic civilian control of the military in the U.S. is not at issue, it reveals that there is little public control over Private Security Contractors due to a combination of the current restricted interpretation of what is an "inherently governmental function" and limited legal authority. This is despite the fact that PSCs have taken on roles and missions that were previously the responsibility of the uniformed military. Further, despite numerous efforts to redress the problem, current political and institutional barriers to reform are not likely to be overcome soon.
