Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pastoral Letter Addressed to the Clergy and Laity of His Province It remained for me to consider how far the state ments of Dr. Williams, respecting Holy Writ, were reconcileable with those express declarations of the Church in her formularies and articles. His esti mate of the Bible is, That it is an expression of devout reason, and therefore to be read with reason in freedom; he finds in it a record of the Spi ritual Giants whose experience generated the Reli gions Atmosphere we breathe and speaking of the Eternal Spirit, he says, If such a Spirit did not dwell in the Church, the Bible would not be in spired for the Bible is before all things the written word of the Congregation. Bold as such a theory of inspiration may sound, he adds, it was the earliest creed of the Church and it is the only one to which the facts of Scripture answer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter Addressed to the Clergy and Laity of His Province For a considerable time past my attention has been anxiously turned to the divisions in the Church, occasioned by differences of Opinion with respect to the intention of certain rubrical directions in the Liturgy, and diversities of practice in the per formance of Divine Service. These questions, relating to matters in themselves in different, but deriving importance from their connexion with the maintenance of uniformity and order in the solemn ministrations of the Church, are rendered difficult by the ambiguity of the Rubrics in some instances, and, in all, by the doubts which may arise as to the weight which should be allowed to general usage when it varies from the written law. It is partly on these accounts, and partly from uncertainty with respect to the extent of the powers committed to the Archbishop of the Province, in the Preface to the Book of Common Prayer, for the resolution of A 2. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pastoral Letter: To the Clergy and Laity of the Province of York Brethren, The result of the proceedings before the Privy Council, in the two cases of the Bishop of Salisbury v. Williams and Fendall v. Wilson, has caused great perplexity and dismay throughout the Church. The numerous addresses and letters which have reached me, inviting an expression of opinion upon the great questions supposed to be involved, seem to compel me to some public and general reply, in order to remove misapprehensions, and to reassure, it may be, the minds of some, who have admitted, in their first alarm, the notion that the Church of England is falling away from the true faith. My position, as a member of the Privy Council, necessarily limits me in discussing what is inaccurately called the Judgment. I do not indeed admit the doctrine which has been advanced, that the Clergy in general are forbidden by the Oath of Supremacy to discuss the reasons of the Committee of Privy Council for the advice it has tendered to the Crown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastoral Letter of the Bishops to the Clergy and Laity, 1894 She was found with child of the Holy Ghost, and the angel's assertion, recorded by the Evangelist, That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost; only so can we grasp as it should be grasped the revelation in the Gospel according to St. John, The Word was God; and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. This true doctrine of the Incarnation is not only the cardi nal and fundamental doctrine Of the Christian faith, but it in eludes and involves all of our Lord's redemptive work: His one Sacrifice for all the sins of the whole world, both original and actual; His resurrection from the dead; His Ascension into Heaven; His Intercession; and the glory of His eternal King dom. When the grace of God is poured into our hearts to know the Incarnation of His Son Jesus Christ, it leads us, by His Cross and Passion, to the glory of His resurrection. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pastoral Letter to the Clergy and Laity of His Diocese Creed, the article on the descent into hell, which the Reviewers Of the Prayer Book had left out and further, till a solemn assurance was given to the Archbishop of Canterbury, that, in omitting the Atha nasian Creed, and in the other omissions in our Liturgy, no essential departure was designed from the doctrine, discipline, and worship Of the English Church. Hence, the Athanasian creed is virtually as binding upon the American Church as 'i1pon the English; so that any member of that Church who should deny the truth 'of that creed, or any article of it, would, thereby, become a heretic. On this same principle, viz}: that the judgment of the One Catholic and Apostolic Church, in regard to faith, and order, and sacraments, is the ultimate Standard for all Christians, it _is, that whatever, in the way of doctrine, is set forth by any national Church for the protection or illustration of truth, must be held subservient to such judgment, and be understood in consistency with it.* There is no middle way between this and the merest private judgment, or the doing that which is right in one's own eyes, a thing directly forbidden by Almighty God. From this, it must be manifest to all, that a dio cese does not determine its own faith, but comes nu der the necessity, by becoming a diocese, to believe and do certain things already determined for it by Almighty God, _as authoritatively set forth by the Universal Church, and conveyed to it by the national Church, and that it has no power to alter, to modify. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastoral Letter, Vol. 2: From the Bishops of the Protestant Episcopal Church to the Clergy and Laity of the Church in the Confederate States of America, Delivered Before the General Council, in St. Paul's Church, Augusta, Saturday, Nov; 22nd, 1862 At your request, brethren of the Clergy and Laity, wo conclude the session of our First General Council by presenting to you and reading in your presence a Pastoral Letter, addressed to the members of the Protestant Episcopal Church scattered throughout the Confederate States. By the mighty power of the Holy Ghost we have been permitted to bring our deliberations to a close in a spirit of harmony and peace which augurs well for the future welfare of our branch of the Church Catholic; and our first duty is to thank Him who has promised to be with His Church to the end of the world, for His presence with us during our consultations, and for the happy conclusion to which He has brought our sacred labors. Seldom has any Council assembled in the Church of Christ under circumstances needing His presence more urgently than this which is now about to submit its conclusions to the judgment of the Universal Church. Forced by the providence of God to separate ourselves from the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States, - a Church with whose doctrine, discipline and worship we are in entire harmony, and with whose action, up to the time of that separation, we were abundantly satisfied - at a moment when civil strife had dipped its foot in blood, and cruel war was desolating our homes and firesides, we required a double measure of grace to preserve the accustomed moderation of the Church in the arrangement of our organic law, in the adjustment of our code of canons, hut above all, in the preservation, without change, of those rich treasures of doctrine and worship which have come to us enshrined in our Book of Common Prayer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastoral Letter From the Bishops of the Protestant Episcopal Church to the Clergy and Laity of the Church in the United States of America: Delivered Before the General Convention, at the Close of Its Session, in St. Luke's Church, Philadelphia, Tuesday Evening, October 21st, 1856 But; although we are appointed to this constant warfare, we do not lose our privilege of peace, because our weapons are not carnal but spiritual, and the war is carried on in tenderness and charity towards our enemies, and our only design in conquering them is to make them conquerors - yea, more than con querors, through Him that loved them, and gave Himself for them, and washed them from their sins in His own The soldiers of the Church are bound to use none but heavenly armor. Their sword 1s the sword of the spirit. Their helmet is the hope of salvation. Their shield is the shield of faith. Their defence is the breast-plate of righteousness. Their feet are shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace. Their power is only of the Lord, whose strength is made perfect in their weak ness. And therefore, in all their victories, they are obliged to glve the honor to Him who has girded them for the battle, saying, in the language of the Psalmist, Not unto us, 0 Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy name be the glory and the praise, for Thy mercy and truth's sake l - and in the blessed words of Christ, Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.
