Book A Passion for Egypt

Download or read book A Passion for Egypt written by Julie Hankey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-09-27 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biography of Arthur Weigall, the British Egyptologist who was involved in the exploration and conservation of the monuments and antiquities of a region stretching from Luxor to the Sudan border. At a time when Egypt was being ransacked by private collectors and the agents of Western museums, it was said that, without Weigall, much more would have been lost altogether - most notably, the wall paintings in the Tombs of the Nobles. The enthusiasm and energy of the man and of the books and articles he wrote played a large part in popularising Egypt and Egyptology, and in promoting the then radical view that Egypt's antiquities belonged to the Egyptians. When, in 1922, Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered by his old colleague Howard Carter, Weigall came into open conflict with Carter's patron, Lord Carnarvon, for his handling of the question of rights in the tomb, and for his sale of information from it to the London Times. Following Carnarvon's premature death in Egypt, it was Weigall's remarks to the press that led to the notorious story of the 'Curse of the Pharaohs': a myth that persists to this day. Weigall had many talents: he also designed theatre scenery, made films and wrote novels. But his real legacy derives from his passion for Egypt, both ancient and modern - a passion that informs the whole of his compelling story.

Book Passion and Precision

Download or read book Passion and Precision written by A. V. C. Schmidt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion and Precision contains twenty essays on a range of major medieval and modern English and Irish poets. The first part consists of three chapters on Chaucer, including a substantial new study of Troilus and Criseyde, four on Chaucer’s great contemporary the Pearl-poet, and one comparing the two poets. The core of the second part is six chapters on T. S. Eliot, three of them pioneering explorations of his poetic language. They are preceded by three on Hopkins, Shelley and Yeats (including a new study of Yeats’s verse-technique), and followed by one on David Jones and Auden, and two on Geoffrey Hill and Seamus Heaney. The previously published essays have been extensively revised, supplemented with appendixes and cross-referenced, and a full Bibliography and Index are provided. The author brings to his reading of ten representative poets from two widely separated periods of English literature, the fourteenth and the twentieth centuries, the same passionate and precise attention as they brought to their writing.

Download or read book A Passion for Antiquities written by Marion True and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1994-12-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman of New York is one of the most important private collections of ancient Greek and Roman art in the United States and among the most important in the world. Composed of approximately three hundred objects from the Bronze Age to the Late Antique, it includes bronze statuettes, marble sculpture, vases, jewelry, lamps and candelabra, keys, weights, and silver bowls and utensils. The Fleischmans have a particular fascination with pieces associated with everyday life in antiquity, since these objects evoke a human connection to the past. They are also drawn to pieces that exemplify the human propensity to transform a functional object into a thing of beauty. Not only has their emotional response to an object’s aesthetic appeal or its historical significance guided them in their forty years of collecting, personal interests have been at work as well. The large number of pieces related to the theater or representing theatrical subjects reflects Barbara Fleischman’s lifelong love of that art. A Passion for Antiquities contains photographs and extensive catalogue entries on the objects included in the exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Eighteen contributors provide art historical and descriptive information about each piece. The objects not selected for the exhibition are detailed in a checklist that specifies their origins, dates, media, and sizes. This book is the first major reference on the entire collection, since most of the objects have never before been publicly shown. To facilitate finding specific objects or groups of objects, the book is organized first chronologically and then by medium. Bibliographic sources for each entry cite both publications where the specific work is discussed as well as references to related scholarship. Karol Wight provides a chronological overview of the collection, and Oliver Taplin relates selected pieces to the development of Greek theater. The exhibition of Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman’s collection and this catalogue allow us to enter into their minds and emotions so that, for a time, we can share their passion for antiquities.

Barrie Dolnick and Donald Baack have collected a wide range of letters--from old family keepsakes to casual and proper office E-mails. The authors demonstrate and explain, to both women and men, that writing a love letter is about turning sincere affection or intrigue into a unique, cherishable gesture, no matter how small the occasion or how short and uncomplicated the note. Go ahead. Fan the flames of a fledgling romance, or tell your husband of forty years that you still adore him as much as you did the day you first married him. Words are sexy, romantic, and wondrous. Letters are legacies. Learn the art today, and improve your life. Julie, My life is starting to become different, even if my days seem the same. And I must confess that it's you who has changed my outlook. You have opened my eyes to some amazing new possibilities. Your touch is so gentle, your kisses are so delicious, and your body is soft when it presses against me. I will forever be filled with a new sense of wonder and joy, because you have shared these things with me. I must confess that in some ways I feel inadequate. Can I match your gentleness? Can I give any feeling as warm and secure as the one you have bestowed on me? You have chosen to show me such strong passion combined with such sweet affection, and I can only hope you feel a glimpse of the same from me. Our time together is very special. There are very few moments that a man knows will linger with him for the rest of his life, and you have already given me many. Thank you for being such an extraordinary part of my life. I hope we will continue this journey together for a long time to come. John

Book A Passion for Giving

Download or read book A Passion for Giving written by Peter Klein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for A Passion for Giving "Klein and Berrie have produced a great book that manages to make complex issues simple. It blends with grace and craft the deep with the practical and the concrete with the philosophical. It is a precious tool for both the neophyte and the experienced philanthropist. It is both a useful manual and a profound exploration of the core values of giving. In a word, this book is a true gift." Andres Spokoiny, President and CEO, Jewish Funders Network "Through the years, many people have asked us why we set up our family foundation and how we went about accomplishing this goal. The 'why' is easy to answer: we are fortunate enough to be able to give back and help others in need. The 'how' is perfectly explained in this compelling and very informative book by Peter Klein and Angelica Berrie." Marilyn and Barry Rubenstein, The Marilyn and Barry Rubenstein Family Foundation "This book should be required reading for new donors and experienced philanthropists. Klein and Berrie have crafted a winning combination of practical guidelines and heartfelt personal accounts to create a moving call to action for anyone who wishes to give back. The stories remind us that when philanthropy, an intensely personal journey, is coupled with deep learning, transformation occurs for both the recipient and the donor." Debra Mesch, PhD, Professor and Director, Women's Philanthropy Institute, IUPUI "I wish I could have had this book to guide me and refer to as my wife, Andrea, and I launched our Harbor Glow Foundation a decade ago. We would have been much more efficient in the process and more focused in our direction from the get-go. Peter and Angelica capture the spirit and nitty-gritty of a family foundation." Michael Leeds, Co-Chair, Harbor Glow Foundation
