Book excerpt: In 1870 Bismarck ordered the Prussian Army to invade France, inciting one of the most dramatic conflicts in European history. It transformed not only the states-system of the Continent but the whole climate of European moral and political thought. The overwhelming triumph of German military might, evoking general admiration and imitation, introduced an era of power politics, which was to reach its disastrous climax in 1914. First published in 1961 and now with a new introduction, The Franco-Prussian War is acknowledged as the definitive history of one of the most dramatic and decisive conflicts in the history of Europe.

Book Guy de Maupassant s Tales of the Franco Prussian War A Collection of Short Stories

Download or read book Guy de Maupassant s Tales of the Franco Prussian War A Collection of Short Stories written by Guy de Maupassant and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These early works by Guy de Maupassant were originally published in the 1880's. As a collection of short stories, this represents Maupassant's tales of the Franco-Prussian War, and includes 'Two Little Soldiers', 'The Prisoners', 'The Lancer's Wife', 'Boule de Suif', 'A Coup D'etat', and many other titles. Guy de Maupassant was born in 1850 at the Château de Miromesnil, near Dieppe, France. He came from a prosperous family, but when Maupassant was eleven, his mother risked social disgrace by trying to secure a legal separation from her husband. After the split, Maupassant lived with his mother till he was thirteen, and inherited her love of classical literature. In 1880, Maupassant published his first - and, according to many, his best - short story, entitled 'Boule de Suif' ('Ball of Fat'). It was an instant success. He went on to be extremely prolific during the 1880s, working methodically to produce up to four volumes of short fiction every year. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Book The Downfall

Download or read book The Downfall written by Émile Zola and published by . This book was released on 1902 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1892, this is the penultimate and longest novel in les Rougon-Macquart series. The story is set against the background of the political and military events that ended the reign of Napoleon III and the Second Empire in 1870, in particular the Franco-Prussian War, the Battle of Sedan and the Paris Commune. Dazzling romance, political intrigue, military conflict -- this kind of top-rate historical fiction is a heady brew that French writer Emile Zola serves up better than anyone before or since. One of the novels in the author's celebrated Les Rougon-Macquart series, The Downfall follows the travails and triumphs of farmer and soldier Jean Macquart, who rises above adversity in a time of terrible discord to find a semblance of peace and happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franco-Prussian War did not end with the catastrophic French defeat at Sedan on 1 September 1870 when an entire French army surrendered, the Emperor Napoleon III was captured and his regime collapsed. The war went on for another five agonizing months, and resolved itself into a contest for Paris—for while Paris held out, France was undefeated. The story of this dramatic final phase of the war is the subject of Douglas Fermers masterly account, the sequel to his Sedan 1870. He weaves this story of military victory and defeat into a gripping narrative and it sets the extraordinary events of nearly 150 years ago in the wider context of European history.
